Monday, August 31st

Good morning!

This week, we are:

Reading: practicing a variety of third grade reading skills with Daily 5 Reading Centers! We are working on our personal reading goals and mastering procedures for Daily 5 Reading Centers. If we have time later in the week, we will move onto exploring themes in fables.

Writing: editing and publishing our small moment narratives.

Language Arts: reviewing pronouns! Spelling word lists were sent home on Friday and written in agenda. This week’s words include science vocabulary words! 🙂

Math: adding and subtracting fluently to 1000 using strategies, properties, and understanding of place value. Last week, students received a copy of the 3rd Grade Math Roadmap containing math strategies for the remainder of the year. They can reference this page while doing classwork and homework in math. We are encouraging students to show their work and strategies. It is not enough to only write down We will assess addition and subtraction on Wednesday! 🙂

Science: describing the physical attributes of rocks and minerals. We will assess rocks and minerals throughout the week!

Social Studies: comparing and contrasting our government to that of Ancient Greece. We will also explore other ways in which Ancient Greece influenced our society with the Olympics and Architecture!

Important Information:

Because of Winn Dixie: Since we are moving onto other reading skills in Reading Workshop, students need to read 2 chapters per day of Because of Winn Dixie. This can be included in the daily 20 minutes of reading.

Student Wellness: Many students are becoming ill at school. We want everyone to feel their best! Please make sure students are getting plenty of rest, drinking enough fluids, and eating well. Some students are frequently becoming ill and leaving instructional time to go to the nurse.

Weekly Math KWL: Math KWL word problem is due on Friday! Please have students hold onto it until Friday when we check it altogether as a class.

Homework Policy: If there is  a family emergency causing your student to not complete their homework, please email Miss Nichols or Mrs. McLaughlin. Thank you for helping your student become independent and responsible!

 

Friday, August 28

Weekly KWL: The KWL for next week will be sent home today with students. I loved seeing the independence of those students to brought back their completed KWL today or earlier in the week!

Nightly Homework: If an assignment, such as a math worksheet, is sent home one night during the week, it is to be completed a returned the following morning! We had a handful of students who did not turn in their Addition and Subtraction Practice homework yesterday for Wednesday night’s homework.

Science: We will wrap up rocks and minerals next week with assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday. A Science Newsletter and a Rocks and Minerals Study Guide will also be sent home today. Students can review these concepts learned in class!

Social Studies: We will begin Social Studies  full time on Thursday with Democracy and Ancient Greece! After that, we will go back to Science for Fossils.

Good afternoon!

This week, we are:

Reading: Asking and answering questions to demonstrate understanding of a text. We are continuing our reading CAFE strategies while reading Because of Winn Dixie. Students will begin to go to Daily 5 centers in Reading Workshop!

Writing: organizing our narratives with paragraphs. We are still working on building up our writing stamina!

Language Arts: reviewing parts of speech, capitals in titles, types of nouns, and pronouns. This week’s spelling words come from Sort 3

Math: adding and subtracting fluently to 1000 using strategies, properties, and understanding of place value. Students received a copy of the 3rd Grade Math Roadmap containing math strategies for the remainder of the year. They can reference this page while doing classwork and homework in math. We are encouraging students to show their work and strategies. I was excited to see many students remembering strategies from 2nd grade! Continue to study those basic math facts!

Weekly KWL Homework Sheet

Each Friday, we will send home a weekly homework sheet containing a Math KWL word problem. It will be due back the following Friday. We encourage you to look over it after your child has completed it so that you know what we are working on in class. Today, we sent home the weekly homework sheet that will be due on Friday, August 28. For every word problem, students must show a visual representation (drawing), example of a strategy, accurate computation, and written explanation of mathematical reasoning.

If you want to join your student for lunch in the Teasley Cafeteria, please sit at one of the overflow tables. Also, please remember to not bring in food from outside restaurants.

Friday Journals

Please remember to respond to students in their Friday Journals  every weekend! They are reflecting on their weekly progress and journey to achieving their personal goals!

Media Center Books

Students checked out books from the Media Center today! Students need to have at least one book at school and at least one book at home. You and your student can decide if they want to leave some at home and some at school or bring all three books between home and school every day.

Happy Monday! Thanks to all the families who attended Open House!

This week, we are:

Reading: consistently and independently reading and comprehending complex literature. We are practicing reading strategies from CAFE (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary) with Because of Winn Dixie! We are using strategies such as predicting, back up and reread, and cross checking.

Writing: writing and revising our small moment narratives. We are learning how to be exciting story tellers and authors!

Language Arts: using nouns, verbs, and adjectives in complete sentences. Spelling words are long vowel words from Sort  2, which can be found on the back of the Newsletter. Sort 2

Math: using place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds. This is our last week to master rounding! We are moving onto addition and subtraction next week!

Science: describing the physical attributes of rocks and minerals. Students observed rocks and minerals in the STEM Lab today!

Addition and Subtraction Fluency: In order to prepare for multiplication in a few weeks, we are making sure students have solid fluency with basic addition and subtraction facts. We will be taking timed fluency tests for the next few weeks. A letter will be sent home this week explaining the fluency tests. Here is a copy of the letter: Parent letter addition and subtraction

Students receiving a 90% by September 18 will receive an award! Please practice facts at home along with the 20 minutes of reading! 🙂

Moby Max: Students will receive their logins later this week to practice math facts!

Good afternoon!

This week, we are . . .

Reading: learning how to read in Reading Workshop. We will learn how to pick out just right books, read to self, and partner read.

Writing: creating our writer’s notebooks (binders) and planning our small moment narratives.

Language Arts: explains the function of nouns, verbs, and adjectives in a sentence. For spelling, students will study words with long vowels in Sort 1. Here is another copy of the words: Sort 1

Math: using understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest ten and nearest hundred. Students may take home their math notebooks with notes anytime for help with homework!

Science: identify rocks and minerals. Students will go the STEM Lab next Monday in the afternoon!

Social Studies: explain how Greece influenced the democracy of the United States and identify Greece on a world map.

Important announcements:

Homework: This week, students need to be reading at least 20 minutes per night. Students can speak to either teacher about borrowing a book from the classroom library if they need one. We should be going to the Media Center very soon! Other assignments such as math practice worksheets may be sent home as well from time to time.

Open House: Thursday night at 6:30! Please come to learn more about Teasley and our class! Very important information will be shared!

Snacks: Please send in healthy snacks for your students to eat at 10 every day!

Specials and Breakfast

Specials Rotation

Teasley will follow a six day rotation for Specials this year. Please print this colored schedule in order to follow the specials rotation for our class. specials 15-16

Breakfast at Teasley

Car Riders: Please have them arrive to school before 7:35 am if they would like breakfast.

Bus Riders: Students will go directly to the cafeteria BEFORE walking to their classrooms.

Welcome to Third Grade!

Good afternoon!

Thank you for joining the classroom blog! The students are already working hard on creating a collaborative classroom community! We will try to update the blog at least once a week with updates about the class and what the students are learning.

Please return all forms inside Cobb County folder as soon as possible.

Tomorrow, students are walking independently to their classes in the morning. You must sign in if you want to enter the building at all times, including prior to 7:50 am.

No outside food can be brought in during lunchtime.
