Last Week of Third Grade

Monday, 5/22

  • Because of Winn-Dixie Celebration– While watching the film adaptation, students will compare and contrast the film to the book.
  • Themed snacks will be provided during the celebration.
  • Only students with signed permission forms with be allowed to participate in the Winn-Dixie celebration.

Tuesday 5/23

  • Board Games Day- bring your favorite board or card games to school!
  • Early Dismissal at 12:20

Wednesday, 5/24

  • Movie Day – you may bring a special snack and a drink from home.
  • Early Dismissal at 12:20

Do not bring your book bags on Wednesday. You will not be allowed to bring anything home on the bus. Please be sure that snacks/lunches brought from home are in disposable bags. Thank you.

Monday, May 15

We had a lovely morning with the awards and writing celebration! Thank you to all parents who attended and for supporting your students all year!

This week, we are:

Math: fluently dividing within 100. In order to prepare for fourth grade math, students can work on being fluent in division facts as well.

Writing: reflecting on third grade with “The ABC’s of 3rd Grade” reading and writing activity.

Reading: applying third grade reading standards with Because of Winn-Dixie.

Language Arts: writing legibly in cursive and reviewing spelling strategies.

Health: comparing and contrasting accident prevention strategies for bicycle and water safety. We will review awesome lessons provided by Well Star!

Important Information:

Target: Don’t forget your final presentations with Mrs. Herbel are tomorrow!

Media Center books: Today, we returned all of our Media Center books for the year. Students should return any remaining books as soon as possible!

Scholastic BOGO Fair: Check out the sale in the Media Center before it ends on Wednesday!

Winn-Dixie Celebration: Next Monday, we will have our Because of Winn-Dixie literacy celebration! Students will watch the movie in class and compare it to the book. Themed snacks will be provided. Tomorrow, students will receive a movie permission form. Please sign and return as soon as possible if your student will participate in the celebration and watch the movie.

Final Report Card Envelopes: Please send in addressed and stamped 8×11 envelopes for the final report cards to be mailed over the summer. Thanks!

Field Day: Field Day for 3-5 grades is THIS Wednesday! Students should wear class or field day t-shirts, athletic bottoms, and shoes for exercising. Please consider sunscreen or a hat if your child wants to cover up from the sun. If your student wants to participate in the water activities, they should bring an extra pair of clothes and shoes as well as a towel (in backpacks is fine since no schoolwork will be done on this day). School lunches will be sack lunches on Wednesday.

Strong 4 Life t-shirts: Today, students received a complimentary t-shirt from Strong 4 Life. These shirts should be worn by 3-5 grade students THIS Friday.

End of the Year activities: Stay tuned for fun activities occurring on the last two days of school!


Third Grade Awards Attire

Students may dress up for the awards ceremony on Monday. They can wear standard attire or a dressy outfit.

This is NOT a dress DOWN day. Please do not wear jeans. Thanks!

Field Day Update

Due to the weather  on Friday, Field Day for 3-5 grades has been moved to Wednesday, May 17.

Monday, May 8

This week, we are:

Math: solving two step word problems including all four operations with an equation. This will be assessed on Thursday. Continue to practice multiplication facts before the ice cream party on May 19. Students who have already mastered their multiplication facts should work on division facts fluency before 4th grade begins.

Writing: revising, editing, and publishing opinion writing. We will practice presentation skills later  in the week in preparation for Monday’s Writing Celebration!

Reading: applying third grade reading skills with Because of Winn Dixie. Students are responsible for reading two chapters and answering corresponding comprehension questions every day! We will have a Because of Winn Dixie summative activity on Friday, May 12.

Language Arts: reviewing spelling strategies and writing in cursive. Students’ legible cursive handwriting will be assessed next week.

Social Studies: discussing how Cesar Chavez expanded freedoms for Americans. All Cesar Chavez assignments from class on Friday are due THIS Thursday! We will also assess Cesar Chavez this week.

Important Information:

Final Report Card Envelopes: Please send in stamped and addressed 8×11 envelopes for the final report cards. Report cards will be held over the summer until these envelopes have been sent in your student. Thanks!

Field Day: Please contact Coach Homansky if you want to volunteer for our Field Day on Friday! Students should wear comfortable bottoms, class or field day t-shirts, and appropriate shoes. Students can bring their own water bottles and hats to keep up with themselves during Field Day.

Tissues: Our class is out of tissues! Please consider donating a box for the last 12 days of school. Thanks!

Third Grade Awards: Third Grade Awards invitations will be sent home this week  IF your student is receiving an award. The Awards will take place on Monday, May 15th at 8:10 am.

Writing Celebration: We are celebrating our third grade writing progress as well as mothers on Monday at 9:15 am in the classroom!

Scholastic Book Fair: The Scholastic Buy One, Get One book fair is right around the corner. Don’t miss this opportunity to stock up on summer reading May 15-17. And the Summer reading challenge begins TODAY. Flyers are coming home this week with special usernames and passwords for your student to log his or her reading minutes from now until September. Cobb is participating in Scholastic’s summer reading challenge to read for the world record! The site also has digital books available to read along with other activities. Have fun and read a TON!

Monday, May 1

This week, we are:

Math: adding and subtracting within 1,000.  Today, we had a sneak preview of the traditional algorithm. Students can use any strategy they want to for addition and subtraction now!

Writing: writing opinion pieces with reasons and examples.

Reading: using reading comprehension strategies to read Because of Winn Dixie.

Language Arts: reviewing spelling strategies as well as affixes.

Science: explaining how magnets attract and repel as well as identifying objects attracted to magnets. This standard will be assessed on Friday.

Social Studies: explaining how Lyndon B. Johnson expanded freedoms and rights for Americans. This standard will be assessed on Friday.

Important Information:

Field Trip tomorrow: Students will come home today with a letter about final reminders for tomorrow’s field trip! We are so excited for this awesome opportunity!

Report Card Envelopes: Please bring in 8×11 addressed and stamped envelope for final report card as soon as possible. Thanks!

Mother’s Day Author’s Celebration: Monday, May 15th at 9:15 am in the classroom.

Field Day: Next Friday, May 12 is Field Day for 3-5 grades! Please sign up to volunteer!

Art Show: Join us for our annual Teasley Art Show this Thursday night at Teasley Elementary in the gym from 5 to 7!  Your child’s artwork will be framed and on display, along with a variety of craft tables for you and your families to enjoy such as play doh molding, giant page coloring, weaving, yarn bracelets and more!
