Math Fact Fluency

Today, students took a paper and/or online test for fact fluency. They have the option to do either. We will practice every week until the end of the quarter for addition and subtraction facts 1-10. It will not be graded until the end of the quarter. Please continue to practice at home!

Frozen Fridays: FROZEN FRIDAYS are coming! Support our 5th graders by purchasing a FROZEN FRIDAY pass. Back to Football Friday: Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?  Teasley’s Physical Education department is proud to partner with the NFL and their PLAY60 program to bring you BACK TO FOOTBALL Friday on September 7th.  Back to Football Friday is a school-wide event that encourages students to get active and excited about the upcoming football season.  Students are encouraged to wear their favorite NFL football gear.  During their specials time the students will participate in football related stations testing their throwing, catching, kicking, punting, and speed/agility. Class T-Shirts: Today, students will receive a t-shirt order form and payment envelope. Please send in as soon as possible but they are due on Friday, September 7! These t-shirts can be worn on Friday’s and on field trips. Our class will have yellow shirts.

Wish List: Extra composition notebooks for inquiry notebooks and small plastic containers to borrow on Thursday and Friday for a science activity.

Media Center: Our class will visit the Media Center on Thursday afternoon.

Attendance: Extra! Extra! Read all about it! As we jump into a new school year, the Teasley Attendance Team wants to reward those students who come to school on time every day. Students who have perfect attendance at the end of the first 9 weeks, ending on Wednesday, October 10th, will receive a free dress down day, a surprise treat, and 1 entry into the end of the year drawing for a BRAND NEW BIKE! Furthermore, those students who have perfect attendance for the entire school year will have the opportunity to participate in a end of year celebration during the last week of school as well as FOUR entries into the drawing for the bike! Thank you so much for your support with getting your student to school on time every day.

Monday, August 27

This week, we are:

Math: demonstrating numbers within 1,000 with base ten blocks, standard form, word form, and expanded form.  This will be assessed at the end of the week. Continue to practice math facts 1-10 and 1-20 at home!

Writing: adding a conclusion and revising personal narratives.

Reading:  asking and answering questions while reading literary texts. This will be assessed on Friday as well as throughout the week. Students will have the opportunity to go to the Media Center for new books at least once a week during their scheduled time in Reading Workshop as well as during Morning Work time.

Phonics: reading and spelling CVCe words (consonant vowel consonant with magic e). Students recorded their phonics words in their agendas today.  We will be reviewing the patterns of this word list in class. This will be assessed on Friday.

Language Arts: classifying plural nouns.

Science: classifying physical properties of matter with the IB Central Idea.

IB Central Idea: “Changing physical properties may affect classifications.” \Students can enhance their understanding of this central idea by classifying and sorting at home as well as noticing patterns.

Important Information:

Wish List: Extra composition notebooks, small plastic containers for Science activity on Thursday and Friday (will be returned on Friday).

Changes in Transportation: Continue to send in signed notes for changes in transportation.

Wednesday, August 22

Raz-Kids: Today, students received their Raz-Kids login information. The username and password are the same. Students will use Raz-Kids at school weekly and are welcome to use Raz-Kids at home.

Monday, August 20

This week, we are:

Math: demonstrating numbers within 1,000 with base ten blocks, names, and numerals.  Students will explore math groups this week. We will work on this standard for 2 weeks and take an assessment each Friday. Continue to practice math facts 1-10 and 1-20 at home!

Writing: adding details and transition words to personal narratives.

Reading:  asking and answering questions while reading literary texts. This will be assessed on Friday as well as throughout the week. Students will have the opportunity to go to the Media Center for new books at least once a week during their scheduled time in Reading Workshop as well as during Morning Work time.

Phonics: reading and spelling close syllable words. Students recorded their phonics words in their agendas today.  We will be reviewing the patterns of this word list in class. This will be assessed on Friday.

Language Arts: classifying common and proper nouns as well as collective nouns.

Science: classifying physical properties of matter with the IB Central Idea. We will be exploring the states of matter with many hands-on activities this week!

Tuesday, August 14

Take Home Folder: Today, I gave students a blue take home folder to organize their papers going to and from school. This folder can stay in their backpacks.

Media Center Books: Second grade students should always have at least one book with them at all times. Students can check out new books during Morning Work, Reading Workshop, and Recess.

Monday, August 13

This week, we are:

Math: reviewing Math Workshop expectations and addition strategies for counting to 20.

Writing: prewriting a small moment narrative.

Reading: reviewing genres of books and asking questions while reading literary texts. Today, we went to the Media Center Orientation. The majority of the class checked out books today. Students have the opportunity to check out books tomorrow and on a daily basis.

Phonics: reading and spelling words CVC words with initial digraphs. Students recorded their phonics words in their agendas today.  We will be reviewing the patterns of this word list in class. Students should not need to practice at home unless they have the strong desire to. I will keep you updated on progress throughout the week.

Student Work: On Friday’s, I will send home student work with feedback and/or grades. This week, I am sending home math review activities with feedback only. Please review with your student and let me know if you have any questions.

Math: reviewing Math Workshop expectations, Number Talk expectations, and making ten. We will move into place value next week.

Writing: reviewing Writing Workshop expectations.

Reading: reviewing Reading Workshop expectations and IPICK strategy for selecting books to read. Our class will visit the Media Center on Monday to check out books. Continue to read 20 minutes daily!

Phonics: reading and spelling words CVC words with initial blends. Students recorded their phonics words in their agendas. We will take a practice assessment on Friday.
