Here is what we are working on in 2nd grade:

Writing: We continue using the writing process as we revise and edit our personal narrative stories. We will practice peer editing and using a checklist for self-evaluation of our writing. Finally, we will publish our writing and share our hard work! Students will:

ELAGSE2L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

ELAGSE2W3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

Reading: This week, we will focus on asking and answering questions to demonstrate understanding of key details in text. We will continue working with long vowels and vowel teams. We will continue daily independent practice to build stamina and increase fluency. Students will:

ELAGSE2RL5: Describe the overall structure of a story, including how the beginning introduces story, the middle provides major events and challenges, and the ending concludes the action.

ELAGSERF3a/b: Identify the sounds for common vowel teams; can decode words with common vowel teams.

Our class will visit the Media Center on Monday, September 30 after Fall Break to return/renew books!

Math: We will begin working with addition and subtraction strategies to solve one-step word problems within 20. We will use words like combine, join, count on, take away, remove, count back, compare, total, sum, addend, and equation, as we explore unknowns in all positions (including Result Unknown, Change Unknown, and Start Unknown). Students will:

MGSE2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Continue to practice math facts 1-20 at home!

Social Studies Inquiry: This week, we will begin a new Unit of Study with the Transdisciplinary Theme, “Who We Are: an inquiry into where we are in place and time.” In this unit, we will explore the five regions of Georgia, including the landforms and features of each. Students will discover how the resources of a region impact the way people live. Students will make connections between our lives now and the lives of the Creek and Cherokee of the past, and finally, students will develop an understanding of the Central idea: Living things adapt to their environment. Students will:

SS2G1: Locate and compare the geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Ridge and Valley, and Appalachian Plateau.

On Friday, October 4, our class will build a map of Georgia with edible ingredients! Stay tuned for information about donations!

SeeSaw: Today, students received a QR code for families to join our class SeeSaw! Students will share work and other learning activities on their SeeSaw account.

KSU Student Teacher: This fall, our class will have a student teacher from Kennesaw State University! She will observe the class and work with students in various 2nd grade academic areas. If you want your child to participate in the student teacher’s activities, please sign and return the permission form.

Spirit Night: Tomorrow at US Cafe!

Fall Picture Day: Students should wear standard attire for Picture Day this Thursday! Please send in payment and form on Thursday if you want to purchase your student’s pictures.
