Monday, September 30

Welcome back from Fall Break! I hope everyone had a great week of fun and relaxation.

Here is what we are working on in 2nd grade:

Writing: We will work on speaking and listening skills, as students share their personal narrative pieces. Students will be active listeners and will show their knowledge of writing as they share compliments with their peers.

ELAGSE2L1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

ELAGSE2W3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.

ELAGSE2SL3 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to clarify comprehension, gather additional information, or deepen understanding of a topic or issue.

Reading: This week, we will continue to ask and answer questions to strengthen understanding, especially how characters in a story respond to major challenges and events. We will continue working with long vowels and vowel teams. We will continue daily independent practice to build stamina and increase fluency. Students will:

ELAGSE2RL5: Describe the overall structure of a story, including how the beginning introduces story, the middle provides major events and challenges, and the ending concludes the action.

ELAGSERF3a/b: Identify the sounds for common vowel teams; can decode words with common vowel teams.

Math: We will continue working with addition and subtraction strategies to solve one-step word problems within 20. We will use words like combine, join, count on, take away, remove, count back, compare, total, sum, addend, and equation, as we explore unknowns in all positions (including Result Unknown, Change Unknown, and Start Unknown). Students will:

MGSE2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Social Studies Inquiry: This week, we will continue to explore the five regions of Georgia, including the landforms and physical features of each. Students will begin to make connections with how Native Americans may have used these features and adapted to the land. On Thursday, students will show their understanding by creating an edible map of Georgia!

SS2G1: Locate and compare the geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Ridge and Valley, and Appalachian Plateau.

Important Information:

Fall Conferences: During the week of October 14, we will schedule an individual conference with every student. Please sign up here for our class conferences-

Action Wall: If you student extends their learning outside the classroom or explores with their Teasley Tiger, feel free to send in or message me pictures for our Action Wall!

Rise Up: Rise Up will meet on Thursday after school this week!

Falcons Friday: This Friday is Falcons Friday! Stay tuned for more details!
