Here is what we are working on in 2nd grade:

Writing: Students will brainstorm a topic and will use the writing process to show what they know about informational writing.

Students will:

ELAGSE2W2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.

ELAGSE2L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

ELAGSE2L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Reading: Students will review and practice standards and skills and will apply learning through various assessments and activities.

Students will:

ELAGSE2RF3: Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

ELAGSE2RF4: Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. (DRA 20K)

Math: This week, students will explore measurement as it relates to time, using both analog and digital clocks. In addition, students will review and practice standards and skills and will apply learning through various assessments and activities.

Students will:

MGSE2OA1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems.

MGSE2OA2: Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.

MGSE2NBT5: Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

MGSE2MD5: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units.

MGSE2MD7: Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.

Science Inquiry: Students will use hands-on activities to help deepen understanding of the concepts force and motion and will make connections to the central idea, “Relationships impact outcomes.”

Students will:

S2P2: Obtain, evaluate & communicate information to explain the effect of a force (a push or pull) in the movement of an object.

  1. Plan & carry out an investigation to demonstrate how pushing & pulling on an object affects the motion of the object.
  2. Design a device to change the speed or direction of an object.
  3. Record & analyze data to decide if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a force.

Important Information:

Holiday Party: Our class party is this Thursday at 8:45 am – 10:15 am. Students will participate in four fun holiday centers!

Parent Volunteer Forms: If you would like to volunteer at any time in school this year, please complete the volunteer form. I sent an additional copy home with families today. This includes any class parties as well, like ours this Thursday!

Field Trip: Today, students received a permission form and payment envelope for a field trip to Tellus on January 13. Please send in completed permission forms and payment either before or after the winter break. Let me know if you would to chaperone.
