Fall may be finally here in Georgia and we hope that the cooler weather will stay awhile.  We are enjoying watching the changes that are happening outside our window. We learned about apples this week. We looked at different apples. We tasted both apple juice and apple cider and talked about how they are different. We make apples sauce today to end the unit.

FIELD TRIP: Just a reminder that the field trip to the Cobb Energy Center to see Peter Rabbit will be on October 24th. Our class shirts have arrived and I will give them to the children to wear on the day of the field trip. Those who paid for a shirt will wear their shirt home that day. Students can wear their shirts every Friday and on field trips throughout the year.

50Th Day: Just a reminder that Thursday next week is the 50th day of school and if your child wishes to they may dress in the style of the 1950s. We will rotate to different classrooms to dance to 50’s music, practice counting to 50 and try to make a list of 50 words.

CONFERENCES: Conferences are being held during the week of Oct 14 – 18.  Students will be released at 12:30 every day.  I am looking forward to meeting with those who have confirmed that they will attend.

LANGUAGE ARTS: We continued to work on our phonics skills this week. We practiced the letters “t” and “g” this week. We will work on “n” and “p”.  We have been learning about informational writing in writers workshop. We learned about apples this week. We used our five senses to explore apples and write facts about them. We will be exploring owls the week after conference week. We will continue with this unit for the next few weeks.   Please continue to work on sight words at home.  Students will need to know 25 sight words by the end of the second nine week period.

MATH: We have being learning the numbers 11 to 20 this week. Teen numbers are hard for most children to understand. You can help your child by having them write the teen numbers and draw objects to match the number. Please continue to work with your student to help them practice counting to 100.

Integrated Studies: We learned about one of the early explorers who came to the Americas, Christopher Columbus. We discussed the difference between the past and the present. Next week we will be exploring how we can create a boat to carry Columbus’s crew across the ocean. This will be a 3-day STEAM activity.
