Reading Counts – 3rd Quarter Due Dates

BOOK #1 due Jan. 20th

BOOK #2 due Feb. 10th

BOOK #3 due Mar. 8th

Students should take the Reading Counts tests during homeroom or complete them on Mondays in ELA when my class uses some of our class time to complete online assignments.  The grade will not be entered until the week following the due date in case students run into an obstacle in completing this assignment.

Tween Tribune – 3rd Quarter Expectations

Tween Tribune is an online current event website that we use to gain experience and background knowledge with nonfiction.   The classes started working with Tween Tribune first quarter but it counted as a grade in the second quarter.  It will be a grade in the third quarter as well.  Here are the new expections:

  • Students should take a minimum of 5 quizzes during the quarter.  I will take the top five grades and average them together at the end of the quarter.  If a student does poorly on one quiz, he or she should just try again on another quiz.  Only the top 5 quiz grades are averaged together.
  • Students must read and write a comment on 10 articles during the quarter for a total of 10 comments.  A comment must:  use good grammar and punctuation, answer the critical thinking question, and contain a personal comment or connection to the article.

I give plenty of time during class to get these done.  However, it can be accessed from any computer.  If your student is having trouble accessing the website or getting the assignment finished, he or she can work with me starting at 8:30 Tuesday through Friday.  Please set this up a day ahead in case I have a conflict.  Students should have their username and password written in their agendas.

It’s almost Christmas!

If your students need help or need to make up work before the holiday break, please have them see me to set up a time.  I am available most mornings at 8:30, but other times can be arranged also.  Next Wednesday is the end of the 2nd quarter.

Students need to have their 3rd Reading Counts test taken this week.  The due date was Monday, December 12, but students will have until Friday to get the third test taken.

Class Dojo is coming to Mrs. Burrow’s classes.

We will be using Class Dojo to monitor, track and reward students for making good choices.  Look for a flyer tomorrow with the correct codes for you to have access to your student’s feedback.  You will be able to track the daily progress of your student.  I know that some teachers are already using this system so you might be familiar with it already.  Looking forward to the next few weeks!  Ask your student about our incentives!

We Beat the Street Choice Board

The students have started a choice board as a project to finish up We Beat the Street.  I am attaching a copy of the instructions.  Most of the project can be done with or without computers.  We will work on it this week in class.  However, the students have until October 26 to turn it all in.  Many of the choices require additional instructions or templates that the students can get from me.
