Gym Notes 9/16

Good morning Pirates,

As we BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND, we wanted to let you know the Pickett’s Mill Foundation “Surrender the Booty” fundraiser is heading into its last week and will end on September 20th.  Parents and students, you all have done a great job so far with our fundraiser.  As of this morning we had collected over $17,000.  Thanks to all of our students and parents for their continued support of our Pickett’s Mill Foundation through this fundraiser.

We promised our students that when our “Surrender the Booty” donations reached $15,000 they would get to watch our administrators battle it out in Ninja Sumo suits. We hit that $15,000 goal this week so that epic battle occurred during our 7 Habits Pep Rally.  We hope they all had a great time watching us do battle in the gym this morning.

Our overall goal for “Surrender the Booty” is $25,000.  When we reach that goal, watch as your principal, Dr. Morrell is turned into a principal sundae on a Monday, all while the students get to eat ice cream!  Any student that donates over $200 will be invited to view a movie at the NCG theaters with Dr. Morrell & Mrs. Gurski on October 19th.  We always try to THINK WIN-WIN, so we are happy to say that 100% of the funds from this fundraiser support Pickett’s Mill by providing educational and building enhancements not covered by Cobb County School District.

We will have practice this week on 9/17 and 9/19. We are expecting a break in the heat later this week. We hope to start some of our relay races when that happens. Please remember to wear proper footwear and bring a water bottle.

Good morning Pirates,

The Pickett’s Mill Foundation “Surrender the Booty” fundraiser began this week and has gotten off to a great start!  Thanks to all of our parents for BEING PROACTIVE and already donating to this awesome fundraiser that will run through Friday, September 20th.  Every family who makes a donation will receive a prize.

We have already collected $8,326 toward our goal of $25,000.  So far our 4th grade is in the lead as a grade level.  When our “Surrender the Booty” donations reach $15,000, the students will get to watch our administrators battle it out in Sumo suits.  Once the school reaches the fundraising goal of $25,000 watch as your principal, Dr. Morrell is turned into a principal sundae, all while you get to eat ice cream!  Any student that donates over $200 will be invited to view a movie at the NCG theaters with your principal Dr. Morrell & Assistant Principal Mrs. Gurski on 10/19.  So far, 16 students have qualified for the NCG movie day!  Remember, 100% of the funds from this fundraiser support Pickett’s Mill by providing educational and building enhancements not covered by Cobb County School District.

Wednesday, September 11th is Patriot Day.  We are asking all of our Pirate students to dress in red, white and blue as we remember those who died or who were injured in the attacks on America on September 11th, 2001.

Good morning Pirates,

We have had another great week here at Pickett’s Mill!   Our Pirates have been working very hard in their classrooms as they Synergize with their classmates every day.  Our teachers continue to brag on their behavior at school and how well they are doing at putting First Things First.  Our students did a great job this week with our 1st code red drill.  We will continue our emergency drills throughout the year as we try to Be Proactive in preparing for any kind of emergency situation.

Thank you all for joining our PTA.  We have continued to add new members and we are currently around 400 members.  It is not too late to join and we want to encourage our families who have not joined yet to go ahead and do so this week.

Good morning Pirates,

Thank you all for coming out to our very 1st Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A last Tuesday!  We had an awesome crowd and were told that it was the biggest Spirit Night they have ever hosted.  Our Spirit Nights help benefit our Pirate PTA so please try to participate when you and your family can during the year.

It is our goal for all of our Pirate families to join our PTA and we currently have 254 members. Next week we will have a PTA membership drive to try and reach a total membership of 500 Pirate families.  If we reach our goal by August 21st, our students will get to have a free hat day on an upcoming Friday. So, if you have not joined PTA yet, please do so next week.

What an awesome first full week of school!  We have been so excited to name our first couple of students of the day and our very first leader of the week.  We will continue to do these recognitions throughout the school year to highlight all of our fantastic Pirate leaders.

This Tuesday is our very 1st Pickett’s Mill Spirit Night at the Brookstone Chick-Fil-A from 5:30-7:30.  I can’t wait to see all of our Pirates students and parents there that night.

Welcome Back!

Dear Parents,

We are looking forward to providing your child with an exciting and rewarding physical education program. The P. E. classes will prove to be an integral phase in their physical and social development. We take pride in our program and are committed to giving the students the best instruction possible.

The aim of the physical education program at Pickett’s Mill Elementary School is to develop and improve students’ personal fitness and motor skills by providing developmentally appropriate activities through purposeful, creative and enjoyable instruction. By incorporating challenging yet achievable tasks, the students will attain positive attitudes about physical activity and movement.

Your child’s locomotor movement, manipulative skills, personal behavior, and fitness level will be monitored and assessed throughout the school year. The Fitnessgram test has recently been adopted by the Georgia Department of Education and is required that all students (1st to 5th Grade) be administered the test sometime during the school year.  A detailed Fitnessgram report will be sent home at the end of the year for all 4th and 5th grade students.

Every child is expected to participate to the best of their ability each day they attend class. The state law requires that each student have 60 clock hours of physical education in a school year. There are days however, when illness or injury may inhibit your child’s ability to participate. If so, please send a note with your child, with a brief description regarding the nature of the restriction.  If the condition restricts activity for more than 5 consecutive days, a doctor’s note will be required.

We are concerned about your child’s safety and for that reason; we ask that they wear athletic or running type shoes. Shoes with heels, boots or sandals (such as crocs) make it difficult for children to participate safely. We strongly encourage students to wear socks with their shoes and girls that choose to wear dresses or skirts should wear shorts underneath their clothing.

If your child has any ongoing health concerns or restrictions that we need to be aware of, please send a detailed note with instructions for their class participation limitations.

The students will be assigned 2 set days of Physical Education each week based on a 5 Day, (Mon to Fri) rotation. The classroom teachers will have schedules posted in their classrooms.  A master schedule will also be posted outside the gym and on the Pickett’s Mill website.

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to working with your child.

Chris Gresham                                                                                                                                 Melanie Whitaker

Thank you!

I want to thank everyone who came out to our Field Days! Words cannot even begin to describe how blessed myself and Mrs. Langley are to have all the support for our parents, staff, and volunteers. I want to give a big shout out to Mr. Murray at Allatoona High school for organizing the involvement of our high school students. Also to Mike, the Cobb County Sheriffs, and Cobb County Police for coming out and sharing their vehicles for students to see and touch.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you very much for making our Field Days a huge success!

Hey Pirates,

There are only 13 more days of school left. Lets end this year with a bang! We are going to be playing some of our Pirate’s favorite large group games.

First up, is our cone stealing, strategy filled game called, “Pirates”. Students must work against other teams to try and collect the most cones to fill up their treasure chest.

Next, you better watch out for the radioactive isotopes in our tossing and throwing game, “McKidiver”. Students will work together to try and knock down their opponents hula huts. The team that knocks down the most in will be the winner.
