It’s the Final Week of the Semester!

What’s going on in chorus this week?

Monday:

  • Periods 1, 2, 4, and 5 will work on their End-of-the-Year Project. Each group will complete Group Report 2 (formative assessment).
  • Periods 6 and 7 will rehearse for Tuesday’s concert. This rehearsal is a joint rehearsal with both classes.

Tuesday:

  • Periods 1, 2, 4, and 5 will work on their End-of-the-Year Project. Each group will share the information from their completed Group Report 2. They will then work on solutions to any cons listed on their group report.
  • Periods 6 and 7 will rehearse for Tuesday’s concert.

Wednesday:

  • All classes will participate in the Encore Fundraiser prize day. Those who sold 10 or more items will receive their monetary prizes. Everyone else will cheer them on!

Thursday/ Friday (Due to the early release schedule, students will come only of these two days, depending on their class period.)

  • Periods 1, 2, 4, and 5 will work on their End-of-the-Year Project.
  • Periods 6 and 7 will participate in a class discussion about the Winter Concert.

Upcoming Dates and Information for All Grades

Please make note of the dates and information below (by grade level):

6th Grade

  • Winter Concert date: Tuesday, December 18 at 7 pm.  Location: Lovinggood theater. Concert letter will be sent home soon with more details.
  • Concert attire: white chorus oxford (They will be distributed this week!), black dress pants or floor-length skirt, black dress shoes
  • 6th Grade Honor Chorus: The first rehearsal will take place on Tuesday, November 27, at 8:15 am in the chorus room. Students should report to the theater upon arrival at school.
  • Upcoming summative assessment: Students will complete a study guide in class this week. The assessment will be given on Wednesday, December 19, 2018.

7th Grade

  • 7th and 8th grade will perform a combined winter concert.
  • Winter Concert date: Thursday, December 6, 2018, at 7 pm. Location: Hillgrove High Theater. Concert letter will be sent home this week.  I am awaiting final information from the Hillgrove facility department.
  • Concert attire: white oxford shirt, black dress pants or floor-length skirt, black dress shoes
  • Upcoming summative assessment: Students will complete a study guide this week. The assessment will be given on Wednesday, December, 19, 2018.

8th Grade

  • 7th and 8th grade will perform a combined winter concert.

Music Department Fundraiser Turn-In: Monday, August 27

 

Turn-in Day: Monday, August 27, 2018

Donations:

Please complete a Cobb County Schools Payment Envelope with the amount labeled on the front. On the “Other” line, please label as a music department donation. If your child is in chorus only, write “chorus donation”. If they are in two year-long classes, write both names on the envelope. Thank you for your contribution!

How to turn in your fundraiser order:

1. Fill out the Complete and Final Order Form.  It is requested that adults complete this form so that it is completely legible. Parents must sign the first blank to verify that your order is correct. Please do not sign the second blank yet. This line will be signed when you pick up the items during Conference Week in October.

2. Turn in your Complete and Final Order Form with ONE form of payment (Cash OR one check made payable to Lovinggood Middle School). If you did not choose to submit funds with one form of payment, all checks must be made payable to Lovinggood. Cash is also acceptable. All money must be submitted in the Cobb County Schools payment envelope (not the large envelope from the company):

3. If you so choose, you may submit your brochure. It will be stored in a file cabinet until October’s pick-up date. It is suggested that you either make a copy of, or take a picture of ,your brochure order form for safe keeping. Brochures are not required to be turned in because your order is filled using the information on your Complete and Final Order Form. Please make sure that this form is correct before you sign and submit on Monday!

What’s Happening in Chorus?

6th Grade:

  • Thank you to those who are participating in the fundraiser. The Complete and Final Order Form, brochure, and money is due on Monday, August 27, 2018. More information will be sent via email during the weekend.
  • Sweet Success Contest: The chorus classes are competing for the last few days of fundraiser sales! The class with the most gains between August 22 and August 27 will win a Sweet Success Prize next week. Happy selling to everyone!
  • Honor Chorus: Information will be sent home soon about the Lovinggood 6th Grade Honor Chorus and Georgia Music Educators Association Statewide Sixth Grade Honor Chorus auditions. They will take place near the end of September or beginning October.
  • Uniforms: Letters will be distributed upon our return from the Labor Day break in regards to ordering the chorus uniform. Students will wear a white oxford shirt, black bottom, and black dress shoes.
  • What are we learning? The students have been working hard on our choral warm-ups. We have now began the process of their choral music reading. They are currently working on the C Major scale, and the Curwen hand signs that go along with the scale. A link to their most recent song can be found on the 6th grade chorus page of this blog.

  • Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) All-State Chorus: The first rehearsal for auditions will take place on Tuesday, August 28, at 8:15 am. We will rehearse on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons from 4:30-5:15 pm. See the attached letter for more details: allstate aud 2018 opening letter-veqdm9
  • What are we learning: Students are developing their music reading skills by perfecting their Chromatic Scale. They are also learning new repertoire. Our current song is called, “Yonder Come Day”, a Georgia Sea Island spiritual.

8th Grade:

  • District 12 Honor Chorus: Nine students will be nominated to represent Lovinggood at the GMEA District 12 Honor Chorus event on November 12-13 at McEachern High School. More details are forthcoming.
  • Hillgrove Fall Concert: This mandatory performance will take place at Hillgrove High School on Thursday, October 11, 2018. The theme of the concert is World Music, and we will sing three selections.
  • What are we learning? The students are working on the Fall Concert music: “Shoshone Love Song”, a native American text, and “Ma Navu”, a Jewish folksong. We will begin the piece that we will perform jointly with Hillgrove soon!

August 8

6th Grade Chorus Student Growth Measure (SGM) Assessment

Tomorrow, August 9,  all 6th grade chorus students will take the chorus Student Growth Measure (SGM). This pretest will measure their prior knowledge of music theory and choral techniques. The same test will be administered at the end of the year. Students will be tested in the school computer lab. Please have your son or daughter bring a set of earbuds or headsets, if you approve of such. If you do not want them to bring their own, a set will be provided.

The test will take place during their chorus class period. They will not miss any other classes. Please let me know if you have any questions.
