Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after finishing the warm-ups and turning them in, we continued reading in our novel. We did not get all the way through chapter 13, so that is where we will start after the break.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we finished the documentary about hunger that we have been watching and discussing. After the break we will continue working on our unit about hunger in the US and reading in our novel.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after the warm-up, you had a few minutes to work with your table group to continue your discussion of whether or not Dad’s actions in our novel were just breaking the law or if they were act of civil disobedience. We will have to continue this assignment after the break so that we can finish reading the chapters we need to finish by tomorrow. Then we read chapter 10 and part of chapter 11 in character parts. We will finish 11 and try to make it through chapters 12-13 tomorrow.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we continued watching our documentary on hunger and discussing the facts/statistics we learned as we watched. We will finish this documentary tomorrow in class.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after our warm-up, we continued reading chapter 9 in our novel. Then we started discussing the idea of civil disobedience, what it is, and why Dad would say he committed an act of civil disobedience. You started working with your table groups to analyze three times Dad was arrested to determine if the things he did were truly civil disobedience or if he was just breaking the law. We will finish this assignment in class tomorrow.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we started watching the hunger documentary “A Place at the Table.” You took notes on facts/statistics that were new to you as well as any “aha” moments. We will continue watching this documentary tomorrow.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after the warm-up, we read chapter 8 and part of chapter 9 in our novel. We will finish reading chapter 9 tomorrow – I promise I will not leave you hanging 🙂

HW 1, 3, 5: None, but if you have not brought in your book report, please make sure you turn it in!

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class you worked with your table group to finish your jigsaw articles. You should have had time to share your articles with each other and then write your three statements about hunger as a group. If you did not finish your three statements today, you will have 5-10 minutes in class tomorrow to finish. Remember, we are starting our documentary on hunger in class tomorrow. If you have not returned your permission slip, please make sure you bring it before class tomorrow.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class we went to the media center to check out books and then returned to class to read chapter 7 in our novel. If you did not turn in your book report today, it is late!

HW 1, 3, 5: None

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we were in the media center to check out books and to being our preliminary research into the issue of hunger in America. Your task today was to build some background knowledge about hunger and to preview the different sub-groups that experience food insecurity/hunger. Tomorrow in class we will finish our jigsaw activity and then form our groups for hunger research.

MEDIA CENTER MONDAY – BRING YOUR LIBRARY BOOKS! ALL BLOCKS WILL BE GOING TO THE MEDIA CENTER

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after the warm-up we reviewed the second set of vocabulary words. I have attached the power point of the words complete with definitions and sentences from the book for anyone who did not get all the definitions down as we went over them. Then we read chapter 6 in our novel in character parts.

Blocks 2 4: Today in class we discussed the article you read and summarized last night. Then with your table groups you started reading articles about hunger. We will finish this on Tuesday after the media center.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after your warm ups, those who needed additional time to complete the touchstones were able to work on them. The rest of the class began working on the second set of vocabulary words from our novel. We will be going over these words again tomorrow in class, so if you did not get all the definitions, you will have another opportunity then.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class those of you who needed to complete the touchstone were given time to do so. You received an article from the New York Times about hunger that you read and summarized. Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class we started a new set of warm-ups to keep our comprehension skills sharp. Then we analyzed a song that was mentioned in our novel and you discussed in your table groups how this song relates to Mom in the story. Then you discussed Dad’s actions with your group. Tomorrow we will take the quarter one touchstone in reading.
