Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class we read chapter 3 in our novel and discussed the events. You had time to work on your vocabulary for this chapter as well.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we finished the part one comprehension check and you had time to work on your vocabulary definitions for part 2 as well as your anchor assignments.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after you turned in your warm-ups, we finished reading chapter 2 in our novel. You then had time to answer the four comprehension questions for the chapters.

HW 1, 3, 5: None. Enjoy your break!

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class after you turned in your analogy warm-ups, we watched two short video clips about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Then we watched a short video about the B-24 Liberator, the airplane that Louie Zamperini was assigned to during the war. You took notes about the safety, maneuverability, and weaponry of the airplane and wrote a paragraph on why you think the plane was called “The Flying Coffin”. When we return from the break, we will begin part 2 of our book.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class we continued reading chapters 1 and most of chapter 2 in our novel. Tomorrow in class your warmups for this week are due and we will be working on comprehension questions for chapters 1-2.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we took the part one vocabulary test and then you started working on your part one comprehension check. We will have time to finish this tomorrow in class after the B-24 Liberator video/notes. Be sure to bring your earbuds/headphones so that you can watch and listen to the video at individual computers.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class you had time to practice with text structure, and have some independent reading time. Since so many students were out on the ASO field trip, we did not read any more in our novel.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class you updated your anchor assignments for our book, had time to turn in any missing assignments, and then play a game of strategy and logic.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class you took notes on direct and indirect characterization and then we started reading chapter 1 in The Hunger Games.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we did a carousel brainstorming activity where you and a partner went around the room looking at and discussing pictures for what you saw, what is means, and why that particular picture was important to help us understand more about Louis Zamperini in Unbroken.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class we discussed the author of our new novel, Suzanne Collins. We watched two short interviews with her where she discussed where she got her inspiration for writing The Hunger Games and looked at a short biography about her earlier career as a children’s television writer before writing books. We then discussed how vocabulary study would be done for this novel and you received your graphic organizers for vocabulary.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we read chapters 4 and 5 in Unbroken. Our vocabulary test over the words for part one will the THURSDAY!

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class block one completed the warm up and then took a pre-assessment for vocabulary for our next novel. Blocks 3, 5 completed warm ups and then took the touchstone for quarter 3. Block 1 will take the touchstone tomorrow and blocks 3, 5 will take the pre-assessment.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class after you completed your warm up, we read chapter 3 in our book. You had time to update your “tweets” and look for text evidence to support the character words on the chart.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class after your warm up, we completed all research presentations and then you worked on a review of research vocabulary terms using your graphic organizers from the beginning of our unit.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we continued reading chapters 1-2 of our book, Unbroken. You had time to work on your author summary, your “tweets” for chapters 1 and 2, and time to look for evidence of perseverance for Louie.

Blocks 1, 3, 5: Today in class we continued our warm ups and then our research presentations. We will finish up any remaining presentations tomorrow in class.

Blocks 2, 4: Today in class we went over the vocabulary for the first five chapters of our new book. Then we read the introduction and part of chapter 1 just to give you a taste of what the book will be like. Since we did not have time to finish the author summary paragraphs, we will do those in class again tomorrow. They are not homework.
