Today in class…

You created accounts in newsela.com which we will use for the first time tomorrow. Then you used Brainpop (via the Cobb Digital Library) to review fact and opinion. You watched the video, completed the practice quiz, and then completed a review sheet.

Tonight for homework…
Finish the review worksheet; Test on Friday over the 9 vocabulary terms and fact/opinion

You finished your Katniss Everdeen “Growth and Change Over Time” assignment that we started on Friday before the break. Then you had time to check out books in the media center.

There is no homework tonight.

Welcome Back!

Happy Fall Break!

Progress reports to went home with students today. Please remember that this is to let you know how you are doing in all of your classes currently, but the final report card for the semester will not go out until December.

There is, of course, no homework over the break!

READING – Hunger Games Test scores have been posted in Synergy.  This happened after the progress reports were printed, so your average likely changed.

September 16, 2015 (and a note about grades)

LANGUAGE ARTS

Today in class…

You took a parts of speech pretest which will help me to determine where to focus instruction moving forward. After that, you continued “The School Play” that we started yesterday.

There is no homework tonight.

Parents and students, you have probably noticed that no new grades have been entered in the last two weeks. Please understand that due to the nature of the writing process, your narrative paper will be heavily weighted and will represent the hours of work that we put into making it the best that it could be!

READING

Today in class…

We discussed chapter 8, which you read silently yesterday. Then we read most of chapter 9 aloud in class. Tomorrow we will finish chapter 9, and you will look closely at the way the events of Part 1 have affected Katniss.

Tonight for homework…

There is a test over Part 1 of The Hunger Games on Friday. If you borrowed a book, you may want to re-read any parts of the novel that you feel you need to review.

LAGUAGE ARTS

Today in class…

I finished conferencing with (ALMOST) all of you. A huge thanks to those of you who have been waiting and waiting. It takes so much time, but I believe all of your papers will benefit from our one on one time together. If you have not yet conferenced and therefore have not yet submitted your paper, IT IS NOT LATE! You will be allowed the same amount of time to finalize your revisions post-conference as those who conferenced earlier in the process.

Those who have already submitted your narrative read “The School Play” by Gary Soto. You stayed engaged with the story by writing questions about the story as you read. Tomorrow we will finish the comprehension questions at the end of the story.

There is no homework tonight.

READING

Today in class…

We finished chapter 7, and you worked with a partner identifying strengths and special skills of the two main characters. Then you read chapter 8 silently.

Tonight there is no homework. BUT… Remember that there will be a test on Friday over Part 1 of the Hunger Games.  If you would like to check out a book to re-read any portion of the novel, see me at the end of any day this week and I will be happy to check one out to you.

Don’t forget – Dinner Dilemmas are due tomorrow!

LANGUAGE ARTS

Revisions, revisions, revisions! I’m so excited to see how much your stories have already developed! You worked hard today continuing to revise your personal narrative. Today’s focus was specifically on word choice. I also began conferencing individual with those of you who were ready. We will continue revisions and conferences tomorrow.

There is no homework tonight.

Today in class…
You had a “Destiny” lesson with Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Webb which will help you to maximize your time in the media center moving forward. Also, everyone has finally made up the vocabulary test, so you received your graded tests back today. I know that some of you were disappointed with your scores.  While I appreciate your desire to re-take the test, due to the nature of the content (vocabulary) and the design of the test, that will not be an option at this time. HOWEVER- I encourage you to re-read your story and if you feel that I missed context which illustrated your understanding of the vocabulary term, please highlight and note that on the test. I will be available every morning before school and during homeroom, and I will be more than willing to re-examine/reconsider the points given for terms that you feel I missed.  Additionally, this is just the first of many assessments that we will have this semester, and while it is having a significant impact on many averages at this time, its impact will not be as significant in a few weeks time! Come see me (preferably before school – so we won’t be rushed) if you have questions.

There is no homework tonight.

Today in class…

You received many “tools” to place in your “toolbox” (your LA folder – prongs or rings). These included a transition word list, list of vivid verbs, a list of dialogue tags, and a list of words to avoid.  You used those to work on precise word choice, sensory language, and transitioning through chronological order of your personal experience in your narrative.

There is no homework tonight.

READING

Today in class…

We finished chapter 5, began chapter 6, and updated your second vocab set. You will receive your graded vocabulary tests tomorrow (I still have 2 students who need to take it following absences). The scores will be posted in Synergy after you receive the tests back tomorrow. Some of you did quite well, and I’m afraid others will be disappointed in their score. Because of the nature of this vocabulary test, there will not be a retake option.

There is no homework tonight.
