Today in class…

Anyone who didn’t finish and submit their research paper yesterday did so today. You also saw the book fair preview video and had time to check out books in the media center.

Remember that we will go to the book fair on Monday and you will also need your copy of Unbroken.

You typed your compare/contrast essay, and many of you had time to begin revisions.

Tonight for homework…

Continue typing if you saved your paper to a flash drive. If you did not have a flash drive, please plan on typing in the media before school (beginning at 8:30) or during homeroom.

READING

Today in class…

We formatted the Works Cited page of your research paper. Then you worked on making the revisions changes into the typed copy of your paper. Many of you finished that and proofread and submitted as well.

There is no homework tonight.

DON’T FORGET – you will need Unbroken by next Monday.

You received the pre-writing organizer for your compare/contrast essay.  We reviewed the two stories and the main characters that you will compare in your paper. Then you got started on the organizer. You should have had time to finish at least the introduction paragraph of the organizer.

You wrote the introduction and conclusion paragraphs of your Australia research paper. There is no homework tonight.

About 85% of the 6th graders were on the music field trip today! There will be no homework tonight. If you were on the field trip today, you will find out what you missed tomorrow, but there is nothing to work on tonight.

A COUPLE OF REMINDERS…

If you are in my homeroom and were logging your reading for the Six Flags Read to Succeed program, I need those forms by Friday.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS – Tomorrow is the last day for donations. Please help us reach our school goal! Even if it’s only a quarter, every little bit helps and benefits a truly worthy cause.

SHOE DONATIONS – The Durham Relay for Life team is asking for donations of old, worn (but without holes) shoes of all shapes and sizes.  Please take a look in those closets and see if you have any you are ready to get rid of!

We continued our compare/contrast unit. We read/listened to “Horton Hears a Who” and discussed his character traits. Then we worked through an “H Chart” to identify Horton’s characteristics with those of the Lorax.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Today in class…

Journal #55 “Compare and Contrast two teachers.” (It could be any two teachers you have had at any time and any place in your life.)

Then we began our Compare/Contrast Essay Unit. To begin, I (started to) model how to compare and contrast two characters and the conflicts they face. Today we read “The Lorax” and noted character traits of the Lorax and identified the conflict in the story.

Today in class…

I collected research outlines from those who had them (IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE IT FINISHED AND PRINTED TODAY, IT WILL BE CONSIDERED LATE AFTER TOMORROW). Then you had a fantastic lesson about digital citizenship with the 6th grade counselor, Mrs. Crandall.  Please share the paperwork that she gave you with your parents.  Fifth block, many of you left the papers behind in your rush to get to connections.  I have copies to give you tomorrow if you didn’t take yours. Please, please, please… when your parents ask what you did today in school, take some time to explain to them the conversation we had in class with Mrs. Crandall.
