Today in class…

We introduced the first ten vocabulary words from Flush.  You wrote the definitions and will add the context from the novel as we read. Then we started the novel.

You read a Time for Kids article about Carl Hiaasen, the author of Flush.  We will begin the novel in class tomorrow.

You heard an example of an extremely strong personal narrative essay (PNE).  You also began brainstorming, pre-writing, and drafting your own PNE.

Read and score “Racist Warehouse” using the rubric you received in class.

You practiced the “active reading” strategies that we learned yesterday.  You chose a reading passage (“The Hindenberg”, “Jackie Robinson”, or “Spontaneous Human Combustion”) and practiced the active reading strategies independently.

Today in class…
You took notes on the elements of plot, then you worked with a plot diagram and the events in “The Veldt”. You worked with a partner to map out the exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution in the short story.

Picture day forms went home today. Picture Day is Friday.  If you plant o purchase pictures, you will bring your money on Friday and hand it directly to the photographer.

The magazine drive has been extended through the end of this week.  We are SOOOO close to our goal, but we need your help to give us the bump to reach our school goal!

READING
Today in class…

You received several graded papers which should remain in the reading section of your notebook (1st block will receive theirs tomorrow).

Then we did a jigsaw activity with 8 different articles about study skills.  You read an article, discussed it with your group, and then reported back to the class the top 5 strategies that you read about in your article.

There will be a quiz over study skills this Wednesday. You will need to be familiar with the difference between internal and external obstacles (on the “Study Skills” practice that we did in class on Friday) , specific study strategies that you can use in a given situation (use the study strategies suggested in the Learning Styles Inventory handout), and what it means to prioritize your responsibilities and tasks.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Today in class…

After Journal #6, you continued the descriptive paragraph that you started in class on Thursday. You had specific revisions strategies to follow before moving to the final steps of the writing process.
