Today in class… 

You learned the “Do’s and Don’ts” of PowerPoint.  Then you learned who your partner will be for your presentation.  Together you will present the information you have researched and outlined about Australia.

Tonight for homework… 
If you haven’t finished your research outline, that needs to be done tonight or tomorrow morning in homeroom.

Today in class… 

After writing your journal, you finished your poems from Friday.

Tonight for homework… 

Keep rehearsing your poetry recitation. Today you were assigned Thursday or Friday this week to recite your poem for the class.

Today in class…

I collected your book reports. Parents, if you would like to verify that your son/daughter did in fact turn in their book report, check their agenda for this week. If they didn’t have it done, I made a “contract” in their agenda.

Next you learned how to type your research notes into a formal outline using Microsoft Word.

There is no homework tonight.

Your figurative language test took the majority of the class period.  Some of you had time to work on the memorization of your poem for recitation.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Today in class…

You wrote in  your journal, a poem of your choosing – serious, silly, rhyming, free form.  I was amazed with those we heard when you shared.  You are a talented bunch of poets!

Then we analyzed “Abandoned Farmhouse”. We discussed the cultural and historical context that may lie at the heart of the poem.  Tomorrow we will go on to “A Deserted Farm” and go on to write a comparison of the two.

Tonight for homework…

Keep working on memorizing your poem for recitation.  We will likely be ready to begin recitations by January 31.

We discussed mood and tone, as well as how social, historical, and cultural background affects our understanding of poems.  Then we discussed the U2 song lyrics, “Pride” as well as the poem “Poison Tree”.

I had to be out today for a county meeting (it’s a textbook adoption year).  While I was out, you saw a Discovery Education video about the infrastructure of Australia. Hopefully this helped you to have a visual in your mind of what Australia looks like.
You completed an exit ticket at the end of class.

You saw some poetry competition recitations to help you understand what you will be doing with your selected poem. Then you finished annotating the song lyrics you selected for Friday.

FInally, you finished up the figurative language practice that you began last week.

For homework…

Please have your poem selected by Thursday (for recitation). Remember, the only requirement for your poem is the length (minimum 24 lines – maximum 40 lines).  Choose a poem that you LOVE, that you connect with, and you understand!
