Science – We will talk about what causes the Seasons and Moon Phases this week.  We usually do this later in the year, but with our recent talk of the eclipse we thought we would spend some time on that now.  There will NOT be an assessment over this material.

Phonics/Spelling – We will work with the Long Aa words this week.  All of our words will either have a + e (cake), ai (train), or ay (play).  We will learn that if we hear the long a sound at the end of a word we use ay.  If it is in the middle of the word we use a + e or ai

Grammar – We will talk this week (again) about nouns and proper nouns.  If we get really efficient we’ll also talk about making nouns plural (adding s or es).

Reading – I have been meeting with each child one on one to assess their reading skills and to set reading goals.  I will give you a summary of all of this in the next two weeks.  We will continue to work on Stamina and telling about the beginning, middle and the end of a story.

Math We will continue to work with numbers in the hundreds this week by comparing numbers (Ex:  342 > 243).

Science – This week in Science we will finish our unit on MATTER.  Our end of the unit assessment (our first one) will be on Friday.  Start to review the pages in the Science section of the binder Tues. nt – Thurs. nt.  if you can fit 10 minutes or so into your nightly routine.  This will be an “open note” test so the kids will be able to use what is written in their black binder to help them.  I want them to know how to go back  and look up information.

Phonics/Spelling – We will work on reviewing blends,  “magic e” , and digraph for one more week as we try to nail down our Phonics routines and learn about the Morning Centers that go with it.

Grammar –  Last week we talked about nouns and proper nouns. This week we will talk about how to make nouns plural (more than one).

Writing – We will begin to talk about 2nd grade Writing routines this week.  We will start out by looking at ourwriting binders (separate from the black binder, kept at school) and will explore all of the things we will do when we write (brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, share with others, etc.).  We will generate a list of possible topics to write about.  Next week we will start working on Personal Narratives.  This is where they tell about something that has happened to them.

Reading – We will continue to talk this week about the different elements of being a “good reader” (fluency, accuracy, comprehension and expanding our vocabulary).  We will continue to work on Stamina (we don’t have much J ).  We will also practice retelling about stories by focusing on telling about the beginning, middle and the end.  All of these basic reading skills will be ongoing throughout the whole year.

Math – We will be doing a lot of skip counting this week (2’s, 5’s and 10’s).  This is an easy concept if you just start from 2 or 5 or 10 and skip count.  But, what we will look at is starting from a larger number and skip counting from there (Ex:  45 – skip count by twos starting 45/ 68 – skip count by tens starting at 68/110 – skip count by tens starting from 110).

We had a GREAT (and tiring) first week of 2nd grade!

This week we will be learning…………….

Science – This week in Science we will begin a unit on Matter.

Phonics/Spelling – We will review short vowels, digraphs (sh, ch, wh, th, ph) and beginning consonant blends (l blends, r lends, s blends) .

Grammar – We will talk this week about nouns and proper nouns.

Reading – We will talk this week about finding “just right” books (books at our level that we can read independently), having reading Stamina, and “real reading” vs. “fake reading”.  Each child will have their own Book Box with books on the reading level where they were at the end of 1st grade.   We will begin to explore these Book Boxes and how to develop Reading Stamina.

Math – We will review skip counting (2’s, 5’s, 20’s, 100’s), showing numbers in different ways (number words, place value drawings and expanded form) and using the 120 chart.

I hope you are able to make it to our Open House on Thursday.  There will be two sessions for you to come to our class (5:00-5:30 and 6:00–6:30 with a PTSA mtg. in between).  I would like this to be a question and answer session where you can ask me any questions you have about this year, our routines and about what we will cover in 2nd grade.  Please come with lots of questions and we will sit down and talk.  I won’t be able to have individual conferences with parents during Open House because the time is so limited.  But please know that you are more than welcome to schedule a time to talk individually about your child with me at any time.
