Social Studies – We will start a unit on Georgia’s Regions and Rivers.  This will go on until the end of the quarter.  Please check your child’s black notebook once a week or so to see what we’re learning.

Phonics/Spelling – We will work with the Long Ii words this week.  All of our words will either have i + e (pine), ie (pie), or igh (light).

**  Since I am late updating my website and letting you know that pattern, we will postpone our assessment until Monday Oct. 2nd **

Writing – We are getting serious this week about writing a Personal Narrative.  We will talk about how the topic is like a watermelon and it is full of seed (details).  We will pick an event (a “small moment”) to write about and will work on the beginning.  We will talk about how to “hook” a reader with an interesting beginning.

Grammar – We will talk this week about irregular plural nouns (Ex:  tooth – teeth)

Reading –We will read a couple Kevin Henkes books this week as we talk about how we should ask and answer questions before, during and after reading.

Math – We will continue with counting coins this week and with word problems involving money.   This can be a tough skill.  I will send some practice items home over the break.  Money is such a practical skill………….you can pull out some coins from your wallet and practice counting them at any time!

Monday 9/18 – Fire Safety Village Field Trip

Wednesday 9/20  – School Store

Thursday 9/21 – Chick Fil A Family Night (5:30 – 7:30)

*** FALL BREAK 9/25 – 9/29 ***

 This week we’ll be learning…………………

Social Studies – We will do a short unit on Government.  We will quickly discuss local, state and national government and the leaders of each (mayor, governor, president).  We may have a short assessment about this unit next week.  I’ll let you know several days in advance.

Phonics/Spelling – We will work with the Long Ee words this week.  All of our words will either have e + e (Pete), ee (jeep), or ea (eat).

Grammar – We will talk this week about making nouns plural (adding s or es).

Reading –We will continue to work on Stamina and telling about the beginning, middle and the end of a story.  We will also talk about how “good readers” ask and answer questions before, during and after reading.

*Students have a new Reading Log to write down minutes they read at home.  For the  remainder of the year, our goal will be 200 minutes a                           month.  Try to have the KIDS write in  the books.  If you read multiple books one day, just write one or two.

Math – We will talk this week about solving word problems.  We will look at how to examine a word problem and visualize what is happening so we know whether to add or subtract.  We will use the hundred’s chart or base ten blocks to solve these word problems.  Check the Math section of your child’s black notebook for explanations of these two strategies.
