Tues. – Halloween – students are permitted to wear costumes again if they like.  No masks or weapons.

Wed. – Operation Stars & Strikes – Bring in any “left over” candy and it will be sent to soldiers.

Thurs. – Picture retakes

Social Studies/Science – We will continue talking about Motion (Pushes and Pulls) this week.  Students will be given a study guide on Wed. and we will take an assessment on Friday.  This will be a very short, simple assessment.

Phonics/Spelling – Our pattern this week will be the Er Girls (er, ir, ur).  We will look at words with this pattern spelled with er (her), ir (girl), ur (burp).   Students have begun writing a list that they can bring home on Mondays.   Please look for that in their daily folder.

Writing – We will continue working on our Personal Narratives.  We will also do an information writing piece based on a Science Experiment (with Candy Corn).  Informational writing is the main focus for 2nd quarter writing.

Grammar – We will talk this week about pronouns and reflexive pronouns.

Reading –We will focus on understanding Non-Fiction/Informational Text.

Math – In the 2nd quarter we will work with larger numbers, numbers to 99.  We will look at how to add and subtract these two digit numbers using the Base Ten Strategy this week.

This week is Red Ribbon Week.  Dress up days will be:  M)  Red Ribbon Kick off!  Wear red.    T) Tie Down and Boot Out Drugs! Wear bow ties, bows or boots   W)  Sock it to Drugs!  Wear crazy socks    TH)  Put a Cap on Drugs! Wear hats.   F)  My Character is Too Great for Drugs!  Dress up like your favorite book character.

PTSA is sponsoring a Week of Inclusion (Bullying Prevention) this week.

Social Studies/Science – We will  talk briefly about the major rivers in GA this week and then we will move on to a new Science unit about Motion (pushes and pull).  This will take us about 2 weeks.

Phonics/Spelling – Our pattern this week will be Long U.  We will look at words with this pattern spelled with ue (due), ui (fruit) and ew (new).

Writing – We will continue working on our Personal Narrative.  We are doing this first one step by step to show the kids what all you need to include and how to put it together in an organized way so that it will be interesting and so that the reader can follow the story.

Grammar – We will talk this week about pronouns.

Reading –We will focus on Sequencing events and Asking and Answering Questions about text this week.

Math – In the 2nd quarter we will work with larger numbers, numbers to 99.  We will look at how to add and subtract these two digit numbers using the 100’s chart.

** This week is Conference Week so each day will be EARLY RELEASE (12:30) **

Social Studies – We will finish our unit on Georgia’s Regions.  We reviewed for our test on Friday and will again on Monday.  Our assessment will be on Tuesday.  Students have flashcards and a map to study.  There is also a study guide to help you know what to study. 

Phonics/Spelling – Our pattern this week will be the FLOSS rule.  The rule states that if a word has a short vowel sound and ends with an f, l, s and sometimes a z, the f, l, s and z will be doubled.  (For example:  cliff, hill,  grass.)   

Writing – We will continue working on our Personal Narrative.  We are doing this first one step by step to show the kids what all you need to include and how to put it together in an organized way so that it will be interesting and so that the reader can follow the story. 

Grammar – We will talk this week about adjectives (describing words). 

Reading –We will focus on characters this week and look at how they respond to what happens in a story. 

Math – In the 2nd quarter we will work with larger numbers, numbers to 99.  We will look at how to add and subtract these two digit numbers using the 100’s chart.

Social Studies – We will continue learning about Georgia’s Regions.  We will take our assessment on this unit on Tuesday Oct. 17th Please check your child’s black notebook once a week or so to see what we’re learning.

Phonics/Spelling – We will learn about Long o patterns this week.   We will continue to practice Long o patterns.  All of our words will have  o + e ( home ), oa (  boat) and oe  (toe).

Writing – We are writing our first Personal Narrative very slowly, part by part.    We will talk about how to “hook” a reader with an interesting beginning and then work through it step by step.

Grammar – We will review nouns, plural nouns, irregular nouns and collective nouns.

Reading –We will work on reading small passages this week and answering questions which require us to go back to the passage to find information in our small group reading time.   We will also talk about character traits.

Math – We will continue with counting coins in our Math centers this week.  We will do alot of misc. assessments during our “mini lesson” math time reviewing all of the skills we covered in the 1st quarter.

**  Much of what we do this week will be assessing 1st quarter skills in preparation for report cards and for Conferences!  **

Social Studies – We will start a unit on Georgia’s Regions and Rivers.  This will go on until the end of the quarter.  Please check your child’s black notebook once a week or so to see what we’re learning.

Phonics/Spelling – We will not have a new phonics pattern this week. We will continue to practice Long i patterns (i+e, ie, igh).   Much of this week will be spent doing assessments to prepare for report cards which will be given out at Conferences.

Writing – We are getting serious this week about writing a Personal Narrative.  We will talk about how the topic is like a watermelon and it is full of seed (details).  We will pick an event (a “small moment”) to write about and will work on the beginning.  We will talk about how to “hook” a reader with an interesting beginning.

Grammar – We will talk this week about making words plural and irregular plural nouns.

Reading –We will work on reading small passages this week and answering questions which require us to go back to the passage to find information.

Math – We will continue with counting coins this week and with word problems involving money.
