Science Olympiad Update

A few of you have asked about this year’s Science Olympiad. I wanted to let all of you know that after 18 years of coaching Science Olympiad, I have decided to retire from coaching this year. I have enjoyed working with students and teachers over the years in Science Olympiad and hope that many of you have been inspired to continue your journey into the world of science with the same commitment and hard work you exhibited on our teams over the years.

As of right now, no one has volunteered to take over the team. Hopefully, this will change but as of now we are not fielding teams for the 2018-2019 Science Olympiad season.

I wish all of you  the very best as you pursue your dreams in science!!

Most Sincerely,

Dr. Kaht

Congratulations!!

What a great time we had at the Science Olympiad State Tournament this past weekend. Ms. Crain and I are so proud of you all earning 9th Place in the State. That’s the highest finish we have ever achieved. We also had a few trips to the medal table for some of you! Awesome!!

REMBER THAT WE WILL HAVE OUR FINAL MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY MORNING IN DR. KAHT’S ROOM – 7G4

I have attached the final standings from this weekend for you to look over.

State Update

Looks like we got everyone registered without any crossover – YEA!!!! We will discuss details tomorrow at the meeting in the Media Center.

ALL A-TEAM MEMBERS MUST BE AT THE MEETING!

There has been a change of location for this weekend’s tournament from South Cobb High School  to Hillgrove High School. The email I received yesterday is posted below. Please read it. Lots of Information!

I will need to get new Permission Slips for the event due to this change in venue. I will have them tomorrow morning for you. Medical forms are fine.

See you tomorrow!

Due to continuing complications with South Cobb, we made the executive decision to change the location of the tournament to Hillgrove High School (4165 Luther Ward Road, Powder Springs, GA 30127). We apologize for this last minute change but assure you that the event will be much more successful at Hillgrove (ample parking, team rooms and event rooms all in close proximity, etc). The event list on our website has been updated to reflect the new room numbers. The school map will be available on our website tomorrow.

  1. Your Team Number: Your team number is 8. Please have students write your school name AND team number on all event documents.
  2. Your Team Room: Your team’s “home base” will be in classroom 2211. Please be courteous and leave this room as you found it, cleaning up any messes made during the day. If you move any desks, please return rooms to their original configuration (it helps to take a picture in the morning!). Parents are encouraged to bring camp chairs to make sure there is enough seating.
  3. Food Options: There will not be a concession stand or food available for purchase on campus (except Kona Ice). Please encourage students to bring their breakfast/lunch/snacks, visit a nearby restaurant, or order in. (Clean up any spills and put all trash in trash cans—see #2).
  4. Registration: Registration will begin at 7 am outside the Media Center. ONLY the head coach needs to register. You will receive an envelope with maps, wrist bands for your team members, and more information for you. You will also turn in your State Roster (signed by your principal) at this time.
  5. Impound Information: The following events need to impound between 7:30-8:15. Penalties will occur for students who are late to impound (see event descriptions and score sheets atwww.soinc.org/scoresheets)

        Hovercraft (Room 1217)

        Roller Coaster (Auxiliary Gym)

        Thermodynamics (Room 1219)

        Battery Buggy (Cafeteria)

  1. Binder Rule Change:Students WILL be allowed to remove pages from their binders now. See the list of FAQs/Rules printed on the website if you have not read through it yet.

We Are Registered!!

Alright Gang! We are registered for State. Ms. Crain and I stayed late and came up with what we think is the best roster possible so that no one’s time crosses. We registered at 8:00 pm. Some of you have been put back to your original events. Please take a look at the roster attached. So, A Team, we will see you Wednesday morning. B-Team is welcome to come as well if they would like to.

T-SHIRT PICKUP IN THE MEDIA CENTER TOMORROW MORNING: 8:50-9:05 OR SEE DR. KAHT DURING THE DAY!

Finally heard back from the directors for this weekend. There was an email /communication error and we just received sign up information. However, since the error was not on us, they will try to accommodate our times. So for A Team the following times are submitted. These can most likely be tweaked.

Battery Buggy  2:40-2:50

Roller Coaster – No Times Open at This Time – Will Set Up (1:00) with director

Towers  11:50-12:00 (I know you want 12:00 so you will be fine  to get there when you get there.)

Write Stuff 10:45 – 11:00 (same thought as Towers)

Below is also information from SO:

Here are some important notes and reminders as we approach the tournament.
1. Wednesday morning (6 am) you will receive a link to register your participants for Battery Buggy, Roller Coasters, Towers, and Wright Stuff. If you are not signed up for events by Thursday evening at 11:00 pm, we’ll know that means you are not participating in those events.
2. Review the requirements for student needs at each event. As an example, if safety goggles are required, they will not be allowed to participate without them.
3. Students should bring their own pencils to each event.
4. The Middle School SO Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 3rd at Oconee County High School (2721 Hog Mountain Rd, Watkinsville, GA 30677). Please see the attached maps of the school that shows where to enter and park.
5. Tournament check-in begins at 8:15 am. Please DO NOT plan to arrive any earlier as we will be making final preparations. The doors will not open to coaches, parents, or participants until 8:15 am. Thank you for helping spread the word to your teams.

6. Lunch is not provided, but you are welcome to bring in coolers, snacks, and food for your participants. Each group will be assigned tables to serve as “home base” for the day. There are several local restaurants close by as well.

Below are two other links for parking and  map of the tournament area at Oconee County High School. You will see the most events are on the Science Wing of the school so travel between events will be quick.

Important Meeting

Make sure you are at the meeting tomorrow so we can go over last minute details. We have a signup for the events of the weekend. Also make sure you have your permission forms filled out and turn them in.

I have not heard back from the region coordinator for sign up events yet. They told me it would be sometime this week.

See you tomorrow.

Permission Form Upload

I gave out hard copies of the permission forms at today’s meeting. Please get them from me if you have not. They cover Regional and State Forms (in case we go) as well as a Medical Form. You only need one medical form for both events. I filled in the information for the school on those forms. Below is an upload of a set of forms, though you will have to fill in the info. I need these before we compete or I can not check you in. Lets try to complete them and turn them in to me or Ms. Crain by next week. Thanks!!!
