Gold/Yellow Day Monday!

Good Afternoon Parents,
Thank you so much for helping Rocky Mount raise money for the CURE Cancer Foundation! We can’t wait to see all the Gold and Yellow on Monday, September 17th. 1st, 3rd, & 5th CogAT & IOWA Testing

It is time for some testing! From September 5th–September 7th, all first and third graders will take the Cognitive Abilities Test, and from September 13th-September 18th, all third and fifth graders will take the Iowa Assessments™. All students should be at Rocky Mount by 7:45am to begin testing on time. Thank you for your support and encouragement so your child does his or her best on the tests.

About the Iowa Assessments and Cognitive Abilities Test:

The Iowa Assessments and Cognitive Abilities Test help determine how students are performing on nationwide standards. The Cognitive Abilities Test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities in three areas that closely relate to success in school; verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and nonverbal reasoning.  The Iowa Assessments measure achievement in several important content areas including Reading, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

The tests help teachers identify a student’s strengths and areas that may need additional emphasis. The Iowa Assessments also measure student growth and progress in the content areas assessed from year to year and may provide information about college readiness for older students. The assessments produce information that enables sound decision making and provides a focus for teachers to evaluate instruction.

Each test includes sample questions to help students become familiar with the content and format of the tests. Samples help students understand what to do—how to mark answers and move from question to question.

For most tests, students read the questions and mark their answers by filling in a circle for each question. All test questions are multiple choice, and the tests last about 10 to 35 minutes.

How your child can prepare for test taking and what you can do to help:

A student who is well rested and well fed and has a positive attitude about testing is best prepared for testing. You can help your child do his or her best by considering these tips:

  • Make sure that your child is in school and arrives by 7:45am on test days.
  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before each day of testing.
  • Remind your child that these tests are only one measure of what he or she has learned. Emphasize that you have confidence in his or her ability to do the best job possible.
  • Remind your child to listen to the directions and read each question carefully during testing. Encourage your child to ask the teacher for help if he or she does not understand the directions.

Score reporting and how we use test results:

The school will receive test scores in about 6-8 weeks and parents will receive an individual student score report for the Iowa Assessments. These scores will indicate how your child performed on the tests compared with students across the nation in the same grade.

Thank you very much for encouraging and supporting your child during testing. If you have any questions or concerns, please call 770-591-5050.

CCSD Bus & Cafe Information 2018-19!

Bus Transportation Information:

2018-2019 CCSD bus routes for the new school year are available on the CCSD website. Bus runs and maps will be posted at the local school for review two weeks prior to the first day of school.

Kindergarten and First Grade Ride Along will be Tuesday, July 31, 2018.  K-1 students, along with their parents, are invited to ride the bus on Tuesday morning, July 31, 2018, as a practice run prior to the first day of school.  The first day of school for students is Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Buses will run at regularly scheduled morning pick up times and parents/students should be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early. Check the CCSD website for your bus route information. Due to limited space, we ask that you limit the number of additional family members riding. Only school-age children are allowed to ride as our regular buses are not equipped with car seats. The bus will follow the planned route to school, then return back to the bus stop.

Due to the extreme heat, water will be allowed on the buses during the months of August and September only.  ALL students may bring water in containers with a screw on lid.  If you have any questions, please contact the Transportation Department at 678/594-8000, or email your transportation area supervisor whose email can be found on the Transportation website.

Special note to parents of children 8 years old or younger:  A yellow tag will be issued to your student.  Please attach it to his/her book bag. This tag will assist transportation staff to quickly identify that your student is 8 years old or younger, which provides another safety net for proper delivery of your child. The yellow tag must remain on the top strap of your child’s bookbag and be visible to the driver at all times for the entire school year.  For safety purposes, do not write or remove the tag.

If you choose to complete an online application, please keep the confirmation number for your records. The online application is available at http://mealapps.cobbk12.org in both English and Spanish.
