Students, parents, and guardians:
This is the time of year when Durham Middle School begins to identify students who may be eligible for the Duke TIP program. TIP is a program for students who excel academically, and are looking for ways to continue to learn and grow outside of the typical classroom experience. If a student is identified as being eligible for the program, he or she will take the SAT or ACT to evaluate his or her academic potential. This is simply a way to find out what areas students are most talented in. Once a student completes the SAT or ACT, TIP can help interpret the results and recommend ways to make sure each student is fully benefitting from his or her academic environment. TIP is a great way to keep students engaged, challenged and immersed in enriching environments. Additionally, students will be connected with likeminded role models and peers who are focused on academic achievement. So, how does a student qualify for Duke TIP?
A student may qualify if he or she scores in the 95th percentile or higher of one of these accepted subtests:
Cogat – Quantitative, Verbal or Composite Score
Iowa – Math, LA, Reading, SS, SCI
A student may also qualify if he or she scores in the 95th percentile or higher of the Georgia Milestones in 5th or 6th grade.
- 2016 Milestones 5th Grade: ELA ≥ 595, Math ≥ 604, Science ≥ 611, Social Studies ≥ 574
- 2017 Milestones 6th Grade: ELA ≥ 616, Math ≥ 603
If you believe that you qualify for TIP, and are interested in enrolling, please contact your school counselor by September 22nd.The school counselor will ensure that you are indeed qualified, and will extend an invitation at that point. Enrollment deadlines are listed below.

September 8-14 our seventh graders will be participating in the Cognitive Abilities Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Please make sure your child is here on time, has eaten breakfast, and is ready to do their best! Please remind them that these tests are only one measure of what he or she has learned. Emphasize that you have confidence in his or her ability to do the best job possible.
The tests will help identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses and areas that may need additional emphasis.
The school will receive test scores in about 6-8 weeks and parents will receive and individual student score report for the Iowa Assessments. These scores will indicate how your child performed on tests compared with students across the nation in the same grade.
Also, testing will begin promptly at 9:20 a.m. so don’t be late!
