Happy Camper Scholastic Book Fair

Used with permission from Scholastic

It’s time for Durham Media Center’s annual Scholastic Book Fair! The book fair is the only fundraiser the media center hosts, and the earnings support 100% of the media center’s trivia prizes throughout the year including this year’s Scholastic Summer Reading goody bags awarded to students who logged reading minutes over the summer as well as the prizes for October’s “Spooky Books Trivia” winners. School supplies like pencils and fun, complimentary bookmarks offered at the circulation desk are also purchased with Scholastic credits as are much of the library’s displays, décor and signage. The media center’s 2016-17 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team was also made possible because of Scholastic dollars. Device charging stations, the multimedia table, comfy student seating, and the new interlocking tables were all purchased with monies earned through the Scholastic Book Fair. Every penny of the proceeds benefit Durham students, so please consider shopping the Happy Camper Book Fair March 6th through March 10th.

The Online Scholastic Book Fair is Now Open! Monday, February 27th – Friday, March 17th

Shop the online fair for an expanded selection of books for the whole family and to share your book fair with family and friends by sending wish lists. All orders ship to school for FREE, and each purchase benefits our school. (Note: Online sales orders will arrive within 5-7 business days after March 17th and will be distributed to students via their homerooms.)

Take a Chance on a Blind Date . . . with a Book!

Image borrowed from Microsoft Clip Art

There are no awkward questions, no forced conversation, no judgmental looks, no need to call. Just have a blind date with a book! Sure, it might turn out to be a dud, or it could be the diamond in the rough you wouldn’t have given a chance otherwise.

“Blind Date with a Book” is like going on a date without knowing who will show up ; check a book out without knowing its title. Each book has been carefully selected and lovingly wrapped by either Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Webb or students from the Library Media Committee and features a description and genre tags. This is how it works:

1. Read the description label on the front of a package.

2. Select the one you will take home.

3. Check out item at the circulation desk.

4. After check out, unwrap and see what book you have chosen.

5. Fall in love with your book.

There’s no knowing until you check it out . . . Stop by soon to find your special match. After you’ve read your book, be sure to Rate Your Date and share your rating via the hearts on display in the media center.

Library Media Committee Members selected their favorite books and dressed them up for Valentine’s day!

The first students to check out Blind Date books received V-Day themed goody bags from Mrs. Baker!

Here are some of the Blind Dates all dressed up!

Calling all Blind Date with a Book Helpers!

Hey Library Media Committee Kiddos!

During the week of Monday, February 3rd – Friday, February 7th we will be creating our annual “Blind Date with a Book” which will be featured during Valentine’s week.

Visit the media center between 8:30 a.m. – 9:25 a.m. to wrap and prepare your books. The media center will have all the materials you need, but you are welcome to bring in whatever you’d like to supplement.

Here are the steps to take to prepare your books:

  1. Choose a book you enjoyed that you think other students will also enjoy. Try to select titles that are not currently one of our top checkouts. (If you are unsure about the popularity of a title, check with Mrs. Baker or Mrs. Webb.)
  2. Type up the barcode number and a brief description that will incite students to want to go on a blind date with your book.
  3. Type the details from #2 on the spreadsheet linked below.
  4. Cover your book so that the cover does not show through. Add your typed barcode and description to the front cover.
  5. Display your book!
  6. Encourage your friends and classmates to take a book on a blind date.

IMPORTANT! Before covering your books, add the title and barcode to this Excel spreadsheet: Blind Date with a Book 2017

Here are some examples to help get you started.
