Hey 8th Grade Spanish Students!

Here’s some research guidance for you as you entice tourists to visit your country. Be sure to brainstorm and consider all the things that appeal to you when you travel. It is especially important that our information be from reliable and relevant sources, so we will be using the databases to which we subscribe through the Cobb Digital Library. Let’s get started!

Finding Credible Sources:

If you use sources beyond CDL, be sure to determine their credibility and accuracy. Use Evaluating Web Sources: A 60 Second Guide to help you. Be sure to start first with these additional sources Mrs. Baker or Mrs. Fugate have vetted for you. You MUST generate citations using www.citationmachine.net for any and all sources used.

Breakout EDU Mania at Durham

Since the fall of the 2016 school year, the Durham Media Center has been abuzz with Breakouts! Collaboration requests have come from far and wide. All grade levels and a variety of content areas including social studies, science, Spanish, reading and language arts have experienced Breakout EDU through collaborative efforts with the media center. One of the greatest challenges of being an educator is getting students to “buy into” the learning. So often it’s the teachers, rather than the students, who are excited about the topics or subjects of study. That’s not the case with Breakout EDU. This learning concept “tricks” kids into learning. Without even realizing it, students are evaluating puzzles and riddles through thinking critically, calling upon prior knowledge, looking through a variety of different lenses, working with peers, and guiding their learning in a setting where the teacher serves on the periphery rather than as the lead. Students must also persevere through frustration and change what they are doing until they figure out the “problem.” Breakout EDU has been an amazing experience at Durham this school year. Here’s a culmination of the awesomely innovative learning experiences Durham Middle students and staff have had through Breakout EDU.

Spanish Breakout

Media Specialist Mrs. Baker, Media Paraprofessional Tracey Webb, and Spanish teacher Mrs. Fugate collaborated to bring the concept of Breakout EDU to Senora Fugate’s 8th grade Spanish students. These 8th graders are first year Spanish students who were also new to the Breakout experience. In groups, they were taxed with working collaboratively to read Spanish passages and maps and to solve puzzles that opened a variety of locks. This Breakout was adapted from “Un Escape con Abuela” via Martina Bex’s website The Comprehensible Classroom and is also accessible via Teachers Pay Teachers. The students were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Despite frustrations, almost all the groups overcame the challenges and broke into their boxes! Here’s some evidence of how these kiddos surmounted the obstacles.
