The Scholastic cases have been packed and sent back to the warehouse, the online sales have closed, and the numbers have been crunched. Our annual Scholastic Book Fair was a success! Sales totaled $5,102.07 earning $2,551.04 in Scholastic resources. Through Scholastic dollars earned from previous fairs, the Durham Media Center has added a variety of new books, device charging stations and a multimedia table. The media center has even refreshed its furniture with modern, mobile tables and chairs with Scholastic credits. Throughout the school year, seasonal displays and signage, and special events like trivia giveaways and goody bags for Scholastic’s Summer Reading Challenge, as well as upcoming Library Week celebrations planned for April, are made possible because of these funds. More importantly, though, the Scholastic Book Fair incites excitement about reading , and there is no other skill that has the power to impact people more than learning to successfully read . WOW! Special thanks to the parents and students who assisted in managing this event as well as to Durham teachers and PTA who advertised, shopped at, and helped with the fair. Keep your eyes on the “New Books” display! Hardbacks purchased from this year’s fair will soon be available for check out. Thanks again Wildcats!
It’s time for Durham Media Center’s annual Scholastic Book Fair! The book fair is the only fundraiser the media center hosts, and the earnings support 100% of the media center’s trivia prizes throughout the year including this year’s Scholastic Summer Reading goody bags awarded to students who logged reading minutes over the summer as well as the prizes for October’s “Spooky Books Trivia” winners. School supplies like pencils and fun, complimentary bookmarks offered at the circulation desk are also purchased with Scholastic credits as are much of the library’s displays, décor and signage. The media center’s 2016-17 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team was also made possible because of Scholastic dollars. Device charging stations, the multimedia table, comfy student seating, and the new interlocking tables were all purchased with monies earned through the Scholastic Book Fair. Every penny of the proceeds benefit Durham students, so please consider shopping the Happy Camper Book Fair March 6th through March 10th.

As a celebration of April’s School Library Month, the media center recently hosted a Golden Ticket Giveaway in the spirit of Roald Dahl’s classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Throughout the day Thursday, April 23rd, 50 lucky students found Golden Tickets in their lockers which they traded for new paperback books the media center had earned from its annual Scholastic Book Fair in March. Hopefully these treats brought smiles to the winners on the days directly after state testing.

Durham Media Center celebrated Read Across America throughout the month of March featuring fun, festive displays and Dr. Seuss trivia via the morning announcements. The annual Scholastic Book Fair, also open during Dr. Seuss’ birthday week, added to the celebrations. Media specialist Mrs. Baker even dressed up in the spirit of the occasion. Also added during the month were the fun “speech bubbles” featured in photos below. Students from the Library Media Committee helped make them to entice patrons to check out the newest books added to the collection.
