It’s time for a Blind Date . . . with a Book!

There are no awkward questions, no forced conversation, no judgmental looks, no need to call. Just have a blind date with a book! Sure, it might turn out to be a dud, or it could be the diamond in the rough you wouldn’t have given a chance otherwise.
“Blind Date with a Book” is like going on a date without knowing who will show up ; check a book out without knowing its title. Each book has been carefully selected and lovingly wrapped by either Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Webb or students from the Library Media Committee and features a description and genre tags. This is how it works:
1. Read the description label on the front of a package.
2. Select the one you will take home.
3. Check out item at the circulation desk.
4. After check out, unwrap and see what book you have chosen.
5. Fall in love with your book.
There’s no knowing until you check it out . . . Stop by soon to find your special match.

Holiday Break Reading Challenge

Do you know you have 408 hours of holiday break to look forward to? What will you possibly do with all of that time? Travel, eat, sleep, watch movies, wrap and unwrap gifts, cuddle with your pets, sing songs, binge-watch YouTube videos and hone your gaming skills?  How about adding reading to that “to do” list? Over the holiday break, Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Webb are challenging Durham Wildcats to read at least 20 minutes each day. Twenty minutes a day will total 340 mins or only 5.6 hours of your 408 hours of hustle and bustle. Grab a magazine, a newspaper, a comic book, a novel, or a nonfiction book, a recipe, pretty much anything with words, and celebrate the JOY of READING this season.

The challenge starts Friday, December 21st at 4:15 pm and ends Sunday, January 6th at 11:59pm.

Students who complete the challenge will be celebrated with a special treat upon return to school in January.

Log your books in Biblionasium (via Cobb Digital Library on a computer or the MackinVIA APP on a table or phone).

Note: Biblionasium logins are the same as school computer logins.

Here are step-by-step directions if you need additional help logging in: BIBLIONASIUM LOGGING IN.

If for some reason, you can’t get logged in, handwritten reading logs will be accepted Monday, January 7th.

For further guidance, email Durham Media Specialist, Mrs. Baker.

Happy Season’s Readings from Mrs. Baker!

Festive Fun in the DMC

The Durham Media Center is as festive as ever and currently displaying books to celebrate the season. Also on display is the annual book tree created by Media Paraprofessional, Mrs. Webb. Come sit by the fireside and work study, or read. You might even be lucky enough to catch a story with Media Specialist, Mrs. Baker. Lastly, be sure to check out the new books on display; new titles continue to be added nearly every week. Happy reading Wildcats!

Come visit the Grinch, and read a little Dr. Seuss while you’re at it.

I just like to read. Reading’s my favorite.

Sit by the fire, and read for a spell.

The Durham Media Center spreads Christmas cheer by checking out books throughout the year.

Mrs. Webb says, “Merry Xmas!”

Mrs. Baker says, “It’s time to check out something cool to read.”

Seasonal books are on display!

The Gingerbread Man

Have you visited the Media Center lately to see all the festiveness on display? Did you know the Gingerbread Man is even hiding in there? He plans to hide in a new spot every day until we leave for the Holiday break. When you visit the media center, there will be a clue to his location. There’s a prize for quietly sharing the secret with the Media Specialist when you check out, return, or renew a book. DO NOT TOUCH THE GINGERBREAD MAN, though, or we’ll ruin the fun.

Halloween Fun

There has been much Halloween fun in the Durham Media Center throughout the month of October the pinnacle of which is Spooky Books Trivia during Halloween week. Each day Mrs. Baker will feature a trivia question based upon one of the spooky books on display. Students who wish to participate should send their best guesses to the media center. From all the correct answers submitted, Mrs. Baker will randomly draw several winners who choose a brand new paperback book from her secret stash. May the odds be every in your favor Wildcats!
