March 13

Spanish 1

CHAPTER 9

Henry and the pirates make it to the secret island.  They cut through a lot of vegetation until they find the entrance to the cave that has all the silver and the “water of life.”  Antonio and the other Spaniards arrive at the island 4 hours after the pirates, and plan to trap the pirates in the cave and steal back all the silver.

Henry decides to use “Santiago” (Raquel) as a distraction because the Spaniards would not harm a woman.  Henry tells Raquel to get rid of her pirate hat and jacket and dress like a woman again. The pirate crew is upset that Henry broke the code of the pirates by letting Raquel on board the boat disguised as a man.  However, Henry responds that the code only applies to the boat, and that now that they are on land, no code has been broken.  Raquel is excited to be the one that will go talk to the Spaniards because she will finally know why Antonio abandoned her.

CHAPTER 8

Back on Antonio’s boat, Antonio awakes in his cabin from being knocked out.  Antonio goes to find Felipe, and asks him what happened with the pirates.  Felipe tells him that they pirates took all the silver and that they also have his pistol and the map!

Antonio is furious and freaks out.  He screams at his crew and doesn’t know what to do next.

Felipe has the suggestion that they could sail back to “Nueva España” (Mexico) and get more silver and sail back to Spain.  Antonio can’t believe that Felipe would suggest such a foolish thing, and calls him a foolish idiot!

Felipe then says that it doesn’t matter that they no longer have the map because he and Antonio had spent many hours studying it and they know it from memory.  Antonio realizes that Felipe is right and that they don’t really need the map.  They then set off toward the secret island and plan to attack the Pirates there and get back the silver!

CHAPTER 7

Suddenly, out of nowhere, “Santiago” comes to Henry’s rescue!  Santiago holds a pistol to Antonio’s head and tells him to free Henry.  Antonio lets Henry go, but Santiago hits Antonio over the head with her pistol.  Antonio is knocked unconscious.  Henry is upset because now he can’t interrogate Antonio about the secret island or the map.

Henry and the pirates pillage Antonio’s boat and steal all of their silver.  The pirates return to “La Perla Blanca” with all the silver and celebrate.  It’s a good day for the pirates.  Raquel slips up a little bit during the celebration and says that “he” is so impressed with Henry and how attractive he is.  The other pirates think “Santiago” is a strange man and a little feminine.

Chapter 5:

Ch. 5 begins on Antonio’s boat as they are sailing along the south side of the Cuba to the secret island.  Antonio is thinking of Raquel and wondering why she abandoned him.  He is sick of thinking of Raquel, and suddenly Felipe comes running to him with news that Henry Morgan’s pirate ship (named The White Pearl) is behind them!

Antonio gathers his men, and yells for them to prepare the canons and prepare for a fight.  However, his men are afraid and are hesitant to prepare the canons.  They think that the pirates are too tough and cruel and that they don’t stand a chance against them!  This infuriates Antonio, and he continues to call his men to prepare the canons.  Antonio encourages his men saying that today the English (Henry Morgan is an English pirate) will know that the Spanish (Antonio is a Spaniard) are just as powerful and should be respected.

Chapter 4:

Raquel is left behind in Puerto del Principe and is sad that Antonio abandoned her.  She meets Henry Morgan, and Henry is instantly attracted to her.  Henry strikes up a conversation with Raquel asking her where she’s from and what she’s doing in Puerto del Principe.  She explains that she came there for the magnificent Cuban shoes and that now she’s alone because her boyfriend abandoned her.  When Henry asked why a beautiful girl like her was abandoned; Raquel responds, “Because he was more interested in money than a romance.”  Upon hearing “plata / money” Henry reveals that he’s looking for a map, and that a man named Antonio Medina currently has it.

Raquel wonders why Antonio left her and devises a plan to join Henry Morgan and his pirates to look for Antonio.  She tells Henry she wants to go with him, but Henry explains that there is a “Pirate Code” that states that no women could board a pirate’s ship.  They devise a plan to dress Raquel as a man and sneak him aboard the ship.  Raquel’s new name is “Santiago.”

CHAPTER 3

Suddenly, chaos breaks out in Puerto del Principe.  Henry Morgan and his pirates have arrived and are looking for the map.  Henry and his pirates are cruel, and will torture people to get them to talk of the map.  Felipe and Carlos are still in the market and when they see the pirates they try to run away to escape.  Felipe gets away, but Carlos is chubby and can’t run fast.  The pirates capture Carlos, and Henry Morgan threatens to harm him if he doesn’t give him information about the map.  Carlos tells Henry that Antonio Medina has the map and that he is in the restaurant.

Meanwhile, Felipe runs to the restaurant to warn Antonio that Henry Morgan is looking for the map.  Antonio decides they need to flee the island, but Raquel is still in the market place.  He writes a note explaining the situation to Raquel and sends Felipe to find her and deliver the note.  The new meet up is in a small plaza.

After 10 minutes, Felipe returns alone.  When Antonio asks him where Raquel is, Felipe responds, “She didn’t want to come.”  Antonio is furious upon hearing this and exclaims, “She’s not important to me!”  However, at this time, Raquel is on her way to meet them at the restaurant and overhears this conversation.  Antonio doesn’t see her, and she is saddened to hear that Antonio no longer cares for her.  Antonio and Felipe escape and run back towards the boat.  Raquel stays behind and does not go with them.

CHAPTER 2:

Antonio calls the boat’s pilot, Felipe, and his friend, Carlos, to a meeting.  During the meeting, Antonio decided that instead of sailing to Havana, Cuba with the rest of the Spanish fleet; his ship would break away from the rest of the fleet and sail to “Puerto del Principe” instead to look for the map to the secret island.

When Antonio, Raquel, Felipe, and Carlos get to Puerto del Principe they find that the Cubans don’t want to talk about the map and won’t give them any information.  Frustrated, Antonio decides they need a new plan. Before meeting, the group visits the market to look for a few items.  Raquel wants shoes, Felipe wants a new telescope, and Antonio wants to buy a pistol.

Antonio can’t find a pistol he likes, until he sees a special pistol laying on the ground of a woman’s shop.  Although the pistol belongs to her husband, the woman sells the pistol to Antonio.  After leaving, Antonio wants to try the pistol.  He aims it at the ground and shoots, but nothing happens….it just clicks.  In frustration he throws the pistol to the ground, and the force breaks the gun in 2 pieces.  Inside the gun is a map that is labeled “Agua de Vida” or “Water of Life”.

CHAPTER 1:

~Our story takes place from 1668-1670

~Henry Morgan is the captain of the pirates.  He is talented and well-respected.  They attack many people and territories in the Caribbean.  He has a lot of silver, and a house in Jamaica, but he still isn’t content.

~Antonio Medina is a Spaniard from Sevilla, Spain.  He is an intelligent but arrogant man.  He is the captain of a boat that transports silver (and cocoa) from Veracruz, Mexico (also called “Nueva España”) back to Spain.  He is a good navigator.

~There are rumors circulating that there is a secret map that leads to an island that contains precious mineral and magical water.  Both Henry Morgan and Antonio Medina want to find the map to the secret island.

~Antonio is boarding a ship carrying silver and cocoa back to Spain, and his girlfriend, Raquel, is running away with him.  Raquel’s father is not pleased with her going, but she decides to leave with Antonio anyway.
