Welcome to Music at MVES!

Dear Mountain View Students and Families,

Welcome!  My name is Gina Davis and I am your child’s Music Teacher. This year promises to be filled with many opportunities for learning and growth. I want each and every one of you to know that I am very excited to be teaching a subject that I am very passionate about! In Music Class, we will have much fun while we sing, play, create and move to music. Everyone is musical! We are born musical and are surrounded by sounds, rhythms and patterns every day!! Together we will explore our musical world and participate in a variety of enriching and engaging activities, including 30 new Apple Ipads and cart, fully funded by Splost and loaded with tons of apps for further growth in Music learning.  Your child’s teacher will share the Special’s rotation so that you will know what day your child has Music. Please extend Music into your home by asking your child what he/she did in Music Class and enjoy Music as a family by attending local concerts, festivals and theater productions. 4th and 5th Graders will have the opportunity to audition for our Mountain View Honors Chorus and details will be shared in class in the first few weeks of school.

It’s a possibility that we will run into each other in the community as I often attend arts events in the area with my husband, Tom.  I am also a French Horn player and love performing in our metro area in chamber and orchestral ensembles.   My professional organizations and affiliations include the American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA), Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA), Early Childhood Music and Movement Association (ECMMA), American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and National Association for Music Education (NAfME).

Parents can be assured that your child is receiving the very best in a musical education at Mountain View.  All Cobb County elementary Music teachers use the county wide adopted curriculum, Silver Burdett’s, Making Music, in conjunction with many other high quality resources in my inventory.  Songs include folk songs from American folk tradition, holiday and Patriotic songs, songs from cultures around the world and listening selections from classical literature.  Your child will receive a weekly 45-minute lesson that is age appropriate, well sequenced and approached from a variety of music pedagogy including Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Suzuki and Gordon, aligning with the National Standards for the Arts and GA Academic Content Standards for Music, as well as Theory of Multiple Intelligences. According to a nationwide survey measuring curricular and programmatic criteria by the NAMM Foundation and the American Music Conference, the Cobb County School District is among the 100 Best Communities for Music Education in America!!  We are most fortunate to live in a vibrant Atlanta metropolitan Arts community filled with professional family oriented programming, much of which is free and open to the public. Studies show that students who have been exposed to a strong Arts program in school consistently show strong academic standing throughout their educational years.

It is a privilege to teach in a district where the Arts are so supported in enriching the lives of our students and their families. I look forward to an exciting year with your child and enjoying our time together in Music!

Musically yours,

Gina Davis, Music
