Alphabets Beats Uppercase Writing Prompts

One of the essential curriculum tools we use to teach pre-writing skills, along with our phonics and math concepts is a series of videos by “The TV Teacher.”  These videos repeatedly model for children, the correct formation of shapes, letters and numbers through a variety of short scenarios.  Each snippet features Miss Marnie (an occupational therapist) writing or drawing the target form several times, with different media, while constantly providing the following auditory prompts.  She also provides this modeling with several examples of the concept she is demonstrating.  You can print these lists to have on hand while drawing or practicing writing with your child!  For more information about the TV Teacher, go to:   TV Teacher Videos   

The following are the verbal prompts we use to teach the children how to form uppercase letters during prewriting experiences:

A   “Long slide down, long slide down, cross your A, letter A”
B  “ Long line down, hop around, hop around, B”
C   “Up and around, letter C”
D   “Long line down, big hop around, D”
E   “Long line down, top across, middle across, bottom across, E”
F   “Long line down, top across, middle across, letter F”
G   “Up and around, back up, turn in, G”
H  “ Long line down, long line down, cross your H, letter H”
I   “Long line down, top across, bottom across, letter I”
J   “Line down and a hook, cross your J”
K   “Long line down, slide in, slide out, K”
L   “Long line down, line across, letter L”
M   “Long line down, slide down, climb up, long line down, the mountains, M”
N  “ Long line down, slide down, climb up, letter N”
O   “Up and around, all the way around, O”
P   “Long line down, one hop around, P”
Q   “Up and around, all the way around, tail your Q, letter Q”
R   “Long line down, one hop around, slide down, the letter R”
S   “Slither over, slither over, letter S”
T   “Long line down, cross your T”
U   “Swoop under, back up to the top, U”
