Math concepts are emphasized, taught and practiced throughout the context of the entire preschool day. Calendar time, independent centers, small group centers, snack time, cooking activities, science centers, and music and movement are just a few of the daily opportunities for us to insert mathematical experiences and quantitative language. Aside from this generalized approach, our Pre-Kindergarten students spend time in the afternoons in a structured math experience which is based on the Hands On Standards Math Curriculum for preschoolers. Each week the students take part in manipulative activities which includes one of these five domains daily: Number Sense and Numeracy; Measurement (length, weight, height, volume, time, distance, speed); Algebraic Thinking; Geometry; and Probability. These afternoon math experiences are closely tied to our theme, utilizing manipulative and graphic materials that tie in to the relevant vocabulary and concepts of our literacy-based, thematic units. Instruction is monitored to include individualized and differentiated strategies.
