Please continue signing the agenda and reading log every night to show that students have completed homework.
Students should be reading for their AR requirement.  They should be finishing up at lease their third book.
Friday, September 8 Р Spelling Test (words are on the Spelling link)
Friday, September 15 –¬†Wordly Wise Lesson 3 Vocabulary Test
Tuesday, September 19 ¬†–¬†Area and Perimeter Test (my math class)

This week we have been working on multiplication using the area model.  Students have notes in their notebooks and should be able to explain the strategy as well as complete problems the multiply 2 digits by 2 digits easily.  It is very important that students are fluent with their multiplication facts in order to be successful with this unit as well as many other units this year.

We will be working on area and perimeter of rectilinear figures through next week.  There will be a test on area and perimeter on Tuesday, September 19.

We are still working on The Sign of the Beaver.  This week, we will be analyzing the character traits and feelings as well as the theme of the novel.  The two characters are having to find common ground and work together even though they have extremely different backgrounds as one is a white settler and the other is a Native American.  This is making for interesting discussions in class about stereotypes and racism.

We will be working on unit 3 of Wordly Wise this week. ¬†We will work on vocabulary this week and next. ¬†There is a link to games they may use to study on the link above called “Wordly Wise and AR .” ¬†The test will be Friday, September 15 on definitions.

Students have a new list of ten spelling words which I have pulled from their writing.  Please help them study for the test on Friday.

This week we will be finishing our narrative rough drafts and completing final drafts this week.

We will also be working on formatting this week.  Initial writing samples have shown that we are lacking paragraph formation skills as well as basic skills such as indentation and using the margins of a page.

Please be aware that in 4th grade student handwriting and writing conventions become much more important.  I have explained to students that they will be rewriting work that is not neat.

We started our unit on Weather this week.  Students are keeping a weather calendar for the month of September.  If you have time, please let them watch the news at home and keep an eye on weather this month.  It will help them better understand the learning in class.  We will be studying weather instruments, cloud types, air masses and fronts, and reading weather maps.

All notes for science will be kept in your students’ Science notebook.¬† Ask your child to bring their notebooks home to show you what we are covering.¬† The notebook is also what students should be studying as tests and quizzes occur.

We will finish up our Native Cultures unit with an open-note test on Thursday.  Students have had a great time building and writing about their Native Homes.  These will be coming home this week.

Our next unit will begin on Friday with an introduction to the Age of Exploration.  This unit concentrates on the North American explorers including Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Juan Ponce de Leon, Vasco de Balboa, Jacques Cartier, and Henry Hudson.

This unit broadens the students’ understanding and knowledge of the world map including countries in Europe and Central America as well as the Caribbean Sea.
