Mrs. Gillett's Class News

Just another Cobb Learning site

Week of September 11, 2017

September12
This will be a short week because of Target and Hurricane Irma.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENTS ARE READING AT HOME TO FULFILL THE AR REQUIREMENT!  A few students are falling behind, and I will be putting grades of zero in the gradebook moving forward if they have not taken tests.
I am so enjoying our class this year.  They are a lively, interested, intelligent group of students.  They are respectful of adults as well as of each other.  Thank you for all you do at home to support our class!

Please work on multiplication facts with your child if they are not fluent with their 7s, 8s, and 9s.

We are still working on The Sign of the Beaver.  This week, we will be analyzing the character traits and feelings as well as the theme of the novel.  The two characters are having to find common ground and work together even though they have extremely different backgrounds as one is a white settler and the other is a Native American.  This is making for interesting discussions in class about stereotypes and racism.

We will be finishing unit 3 of Wordly Wise this week.   There is a link to games they may use to study on the link above called “Wordly Wise and AR .”  The test will be Friday, September 15 on definitions.

There will be no spelling test this week.

This week we will be finishing our narrative final drafts and sharing them with the class.

After sharing, we will be working on basic paragraph construction before moving on to our next writing activity.  Next week, we will be writing a journal entry from an explorer’s point of view that will support our new Social Studies unit.

Please be aware that in 4th grade student handwriting and writing conventions become much more important.  I have explained to students that they will be rewriting work that is not neat.

We started our unit on Weather last week.  Students are keeping a weather calendar for the month of September.  If you have time, please let them watch the news at home and keep an eye on weather this month.  It will help them better understand the learning in class.  We will be studying weather instruments, cloud types, air masses and fronts, and reading weather maps.

Last week, we went over weather instruments.  Students made weather instruments in the Kincaid Foundation Science Lab.  This week we will begin studying cloud types and then moving on to air masses and weather maps.  Hurricane Irma offered a great real life example for students as they were able to track the hurricane’s movement using the Weather Channel website.

All notes for science will be kept in your students’ Science notebook.  Ask your child to bring their notebooks home to show you what we are covering.  The notebook is also what students should be studying as tests and quizzes occur.

We briefly began our study of North American explorers last week.  We were able to view the world map and discuss why the European explorers wanted to get to the Far East.

This unit concentrates on the North American explorers including Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Juan Ponce de Leon, Vasco de Balboa, Jacques Cartier, and Henry Hudson.

This unit broadens the students’ understanding and knowledge of the world map including countries in Europe and Central America as well as the Caribbean Sea.
