### Week of October 16, 2017

October13
REMEMBER THAT NEXT WEEK IS CONFERENCES AND EARLY RELEASE.
Thank you to everyone who sent in force and motion games.  The kids were able to play with some today when they finished their Explorer writing.  We will keep them for one more week.  If anyone else wants to send something in, we would love it!
Our class would love to borrow any games or models that in any way use/show gravity and the forces of push and pull.  Examples are labyrinths, Perplexus, Suspend games, Jenga, race tracks, and marble mazes.  They will be sent home in about one week.
Please ask your students if they have glue sticks and dry erase markers.  They need them almost daily, and many are running low.
Please continue signing the agenda and reading log every night to show that students have completed homework.
Friday, October 20 – Wordly Wise unit 5 test
Friday, October 20 – Multiplication with traditional algorithm quiz

There are still a few students who do not know their multiplication tables.  Please use flashcards or call facts out to help them speed up these facts.  The worst ones are 6 x 7, 6 x 8, and 8 x 7.

We had a quiz Friday on area model and partial product for multiplication.

This week we will continue to perfect our study of the traditional algorithm for multiplication until we are confident multiplying 1 digit by 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers and 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.

The traditional method is a 5th grade standard that is being covered in AC 4th grade math.  Students need to be fluent with their multiplication strategies.  Please take some time to quiz them on the tables through 9 to help with this unit.

We will begin studying informational text for the next few weeks.  This week we will finish a textbook scavenger hunt for text features and then move on to Main Idea and Summarizing informational text.

We will be finishing unit 5 of Wordly Wise this week.   There is a link to games they may use to study on the link above called “Wordly Wise and AR .”  The test will be Friday, October 20 on definitions.

There will be no spelling this week because of the Early Release schedule.

Students will be working on summarizing informational text this week.

Please be aware that in 4th grade student handwriting and writing conventions become much more important.  I have explained to students that they will be rewriting work that is not neat.

Our next unit will be Force and Motion.  We will begin this unit next week.  There will be no science this week because of Early Release.

Please send in any games or toys you have at home that the students can explore this week to begin this unit.

All notes for science will be kept in your students’ Science notebook.  Ask your child to bring their notebooks home to show you what we are covering.  The notebook is also what students should be studying as tests and quizzes occur.

This week we will begin our unit on American colonization.  Students will spend some time this week looking at and understanding the map of the colonies.  We will begin with the New England region looking at the history, the georgraphy, and the jobs.

Please be sure to enter your email in the “Subscribe” box on the right to receive updates to my blog.  You will be able to keep up with our class and find out what we are doing each week.  In addition, I will be able to communicate class news and updates on this blog.
