Updates/Reminders

Holiday Traditions Sharing: Yesterday I sent home a red paper about this.  Each child has an assigned day to bring in one item to share along with a writing prompt.  Please let me know if you need me to send home another copy.  We can’t wait to hear about everyone’s winter holiday traditions and celebrations!

Book Swap: Yesterday, I also sent home information about a book swap we will be having.  Please let me know if you need me to send home another copy. The books are due on Wednesday, December 18th.

FACT Clubs: This is the last week for FACT clubs for fall semester. We will return to your child’s original dismissal plan when FACT clubs are complete. It is greatly appreciated if you send in a note to confirm what we have as the change in dismissal. If your child is in a club that is having another session for some reason (make-up session, awards ceremony,…), please write us a note to have them attend that.  We are not informed of these changes.  I will assume that club is over and return to their original dismissal unless you let me know otherwise.

Giving Bag: Our class is collecting supplies for a Giving Bag as our community outreach tradition.  The supplies collected will go to the families at our sister schools to help them during the holiday break.  Please see Shutterfly for donations needed.  The students will be making cards during class to include in our bag.

Math Games: I will not be sending home a new math game until after Winter Break.  Please continue to work on reading every night and sight words (either reading or spelling).

Gumball Words: Some students have read all their gumball words and are working on spelling them.  Please put a note in their daily folder when your child is ready to test on the spelling of each gumball machine list.

Readers Theater: I have started Readers Theater with every reading group now.  Please ask your child about it.  They absolutely love it!!!! Readers Theater is a great way to get children to reread stories.  Rereading helps children develop expression and fluency.  As they practice their scripts, they start to commit all those words to memory.  In readers theater, we don’t use props or costumes.  It is about reading and rereading.  If a script is in their red reading bag, we are still using it.  If it is in their green daily folder, we are done with it.  I post each performance on Seesaw for you to see.

Buster the Bus: We will be having a presentation on bus safety, December 12th.  Just wanted to let you know because your child may come home telling you about the talking bus.

Field Trip: Our Legoland field trip is December 16th.  Don’t forget lunch is included, so no need to pack a lunch that day.  We will still have snack in the classroom before we leave.

Class Party: Our class party is December 18th.  Parents are welcome to attend either as a volunteer or just for fun.  It is from 10:30-11:15.

December 19th and 20th: Don’t forget these days are early release.  That means everything is moved up 2 hours.

January 6th– Students return to school.   😊

Needs: If you would like to donate any of the items below, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • Brown Grocery bags– We can never have too many of these.
  • Markers– Mr. Sketch smelly markers. The morning artists are going through the markers I have very quickly.  I know they would love the smelly ones.
  • Highlighters– I could use highlighters of all colors, but especially pink and blue (Piggie and Elephant colors).

I think that is all for now! I hope that you all have a wonderful winter break!

November 21, 2019

  •  We are in need of empty plastic water bottles tomorrow.  Sorry for the late notice.  If you have any, please send them in tomorrow only.
  •  Reading books didn’t go home this week, so I could do reading assessments.  I am going to send home their Poetry Journal during break for them to practice reading with you.  When children reread material, it helps build their fluency and commit high frequency words to memory.  Please make sure to send it back after break.  We use this each week.
  •  As after school clubs finish, please make sure to send in a note changing back their dismissal.  Some clubs are finishing on different dates, and we are unaware of these changes.  No note = no dismissal change.

Only 2 more weeks until Thanksgiving break! That’s crazy!

Here are a few reminders for what will be going on this month:

Friday, Nov. 15 is the fifth grade’s Pajama Pant Challenge. They are raising money for the Center for Children and Young Adults. If your child would like to wear pajamas that day, please send in $1.00.

Wednesday, Nov. 20th  our class will be participating in our second High Touch High Tech program focusing on force and motion.

On Nov. 22nd, we will be having our Friendship Feast. Letters were sent home Monday requesting a specific food donation. We will be making trail mix and fruit salad.

Our focus over the next 2 weeks will be on friendship and the meaning behind Thanksgiving. When we return from break we will be discussing and sharing our different holiday traditions. Such a fun and exciting time!

October 18, 2019

It was so great to meet with all of you this week.  I am so proud of your children and the progress they are making.

Here are a few things to know…

Foundation Patron Drive- If you haven’t donated to the Foundation yet, please consider doing so.  It is incredible the training and resources it has provided for me to use in the classroom.  It would be great to have 100% participation this year.

Grocery bags- We need your brown grocery bags.  If you have any brown, grocery bags at home (Kroger, Publix, Trader joes…) please send them in by October 31.  We will be using them for the Fall Festival.

Recess- We will be going to recess every day that the temperature is above 45, so please make sure to send your child with clothing good for the outside temperature.  No gloves or mittens, please.  It is tough to chase down lost ones all over the playground.

Math games- These games are a super fun way for your child to practice one of the quarterly standards each week.  Try to return them on Friday, so I can restock the bags at the same time.

Raz-kids- I will be updating Raz-kids today with your child’s reading level to reflect their growth from quarter 1.  Please encourage them to give it a try from home if they haven’t already.

What we are learning (next week) …

Reading- We will be learning about more reading Super Powers (pointer power, reread power, partner power, picture power, snap word power, sound power, persistence power, and book talk power).

Writing- We will continue to write personal narrative stories.  We will be working on printing, punctuation, and spacing.

Math- We will be comparing numbers and using vocabulary; such as, more, less, greater than, less than, and equal to. We will continue to learn to read teen numbers and understand place value.

I think that is all for now.  Have a great weekend!

October 8, 2019

  • Our Foundation Patron Drive is still going strong!  Let’s go ALL IN!! It would be amazing to have 100% participation. Thank you to the Mt. Bethel Foundation which has impacted our classroom personally in so many ways! I can’t wait to share some examples with you throughout the month.  New this year from the Foundation– The Voyage!  This is our new character education program.  Last month, we focused on the life-skill of cooperation.  This month, our focus is on perseverance. Ask your child about it.  I’m sure they would love to share!
  • Tomorrow (October 9) is Braves Spirit Day.  Have your child wear Braves colors tomorrow if they would like.
  • Gumball Words- Last Friday, we were not able to test the Gumball Words.  Hopefully, we can get to it this Friday.
  • Cold Classroom- Our classroom can be very cold at times, and I am not able to adjust the temperature.  You may want to leave a sweater or sweatshirt in your child’s backpack just in case they might need it.
  • Donations- We would love some donations of sidewalk chalk.  I think the best deal is to order it off Amazon.  I think they have some large boxes of it.  The students love to draw with it at recess, and it goes quick.
  • Water Bottles- Please make sure that your child only has water in their water bottle.  It can become a sticky mess if they have juice or milk, and it spills in the classroom.  If they would like something other than water at lunch, please pack that separately in their lunchbox.
  • Minimum Day- We have a lot of minimum days coming up.  October 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18.  This means that their dismissal is 2 hours earlier than their regular day.
  • Math Game- There will not be a math game sent home next week.
  • Parent Conferences- I look forward to meeting all of you next week and bragging on your child’s accomplishments.  I am so proud of them!!!!

I think that is all for now.  Have a great week!

Happy Friday!  Here are a few things to know…

  • Math Game – I sent home a new math game today.  It has some pretty challenging 3D shapes on it.  We went over it today, so hopefully they will be able to share the names with you.  The standard is only to know cylinder, sphere, cube, and cone.  The rest are for fun and extension.  There is a paperclip on the game to use as a spinner.
  • Book Fair- This will be going on through next week.  The students are super excited to go with mom and dad.

I think that is all for now.  Have a great weekend!
