It’s already a new school year and we’re getting things ready for you in the media center! We have several big projects planned for the year and want to also share a few reminders with you.
We’re going to organize the fiction (chapter book) section by genres. This process is called genrefication, and will help students find books by their favorite genres such as adventure, scary stories, mysteries, etc…
We’re creating an early reader chapter book section on the “island” shelf in front of the circulation desk. This will be an area for our youngest students to find age-appropriate beginning chapter books.
We’re working on Learning Commons certification. If you’re curious about the Learning Commons model, this is a great article to read: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/21st-century-libraries-learning-commons-beth-holland
The media center is open from 7:15-2:10 pm. Checkouts for students in grades 3-5 begin the week of August 6. Checkouts for students in grades K-2 will begin the week of August 13 after they have been through orientation.
Students in Kindergarten can checkout 1 item. Students in 1st and 2nd grades can checkout 2 items. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade can checkout 3 items. Parents can checkout 5 items once they establish a parent account – just stop by the media center to do this.
All checked out items are due back within 14 days. Items may be renewed once if no one is waiting on the item.
We are always on the lookout for new and exciting books for our students! If you have a book suggestion, let us know. There’s a box at the circulation desk. Write your name on the paper and when it arrives, we’ll let you be the first to check it out.
If you ever have a question, please stop by at your convenience! We look forward to a wonderfully busy year!
It’s time for Summer Reading! Not feeling like reading? Watch this to get a little encouragement:
This year we’re using Biblionasium to log our minutes. Flyers were sent home the last full week of school with information, but here are the details:
Reading Goal – all students read (and log) 1500 minutes
Use Biblionasium to log the minutes. Students should use their school computer login & password. Here’s a video showing how to use the reading log:
If you don’t have a book at home, read online!

News Crew – This is available for rising 5th graders
Media Center Crew – This is available for rising 4th and 5th graders.
Applications are available in the media center or you can download them below. All applications are due to Mrs. Kenworthy by 5/16/18 and are only for the August – December 2018 semester. Please see Mrs. Kenworthy if you have any questions.
We’re excited to begin the 2017-2018 school year and have lots of exciting plans in store for you! More about that later, but don’t forget that the Summer Reading Challenge doesn’t actually end until September 8th! Keep reading so you can see Mrs. Kenworthy and Mrs. McReynolds get slimed!
Our latest book order has arrived and it’s 274 books! We’re super excited about all the new picture books and chapter books just waiting to be read. We’ve now been able to add 353 new books to our collection this year. Happy Reading!
The ceiling and roof are now a silvery gray – giving the interior a much brighter atmosphere. The main body and benches are a blue-gray color that blends perfectly with the Garrison Mill Greyhounds school colors. Stay tuned – carpet arrives tomorrow!
The mill in the media center has been around since the beginning of Garrison Mill – 1984 – and was in need of a refresh. The PTA has come to the rescue and is in the process of giving the mill some love.
The mill before – just an empty space that wasn’t being used all that much.
The mill after day 1 of the refresh – built in bench seating all the way around a space for books for our new ongoing book exchange program. More on that to come in a later post!
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! We’re excited to share with you the new books and programs we have ready for this year. Lessons and checkouts will begin the week of August 15. We’ve already kicked off our Good Morning Greyhounds news show and are eagerly anticipating the arrival of our new equipment to provide even more opportunities to learn technology for the news show and for special classroom projects in our makerspace.
As a reminder – students in Kindergarten – Second grade will be allowed to checkout one item and students in Third – Fifth grade will be allowed to checkout two items. Parents can sign up for an account and checkout up to five items at one time to support additional reading at home.
Please feel free to stop by at any time if you have any questions or need help choosing a book for your child. We’re happy to help!
