Happy Labor Day weekend, Griffin Families!
Our music department fundraiser kicks off next week on Wednesday, September 6th. This fundraiser allows us to buy instruments, supplies, and hire professional musicians, all which benefit every student in the Griffin Band. We ask that you sell 10 items, or make a general donation to the band program. 10 items is the equivalent of $40 profit for the organization. Thank you in advance for your support.

We have had quite a week in the Griffin Band Program!
6th Grade: We made our first sounds this week! It was…something 🙂 The kids are so excited, and we know that they’ll get better, especially with practice. Please make sure your child has started memorizing the care and maintenance portion of their book (Page 3), so they can recite it for us (paraphrasing is fine), get an instrument check-out form, and take their instruments home for practice soon!
7th Grade: Students are passing-off music from their Essential Elements books, from the Jump Start warm-up, and from our songs (Creatures in the Attic, Midnight Madness, and Ghostbusters.) Your child should be practicing at least 3 nights a week to maintain and improve skill. Look for at least 2 pass-off signatures so far. They need a total of 8 for the nine weeks grading period.
8th Grade: We are working hard on Etowah, and passing off the whole song. The expectation is that it is passed off in its entirety by the 4 1/2 week grading mark, August 31st. We are available to listen and help those who need it during morning and afternoon band. We are also working on Comet Ride and Funkytown. Funkytown is the song farthest away from being prepared for September’s concert. Please listen to your child play measures 37-end, and if it’s not great, send them to morning band for extra support.
7th & 8th Grade: Morning band and afternoon band are cancelled on Monday, August 21st because of the eclipse. Mrs. Cole and Mr. Rabun have a meeting in the morning regarding the event, and school will dismiss at 5:15, which is the normal end of afternoon band. We will have morning band Tuesday-Friday, and afternoon band Tuesday-Thursday.
The 7th and 8th grade band social is this Friday, August 25th. Students who turned in permission forms by Friday, August 18th will stay with us after school, and need to be picked up at 6pm. Please visit the following link to donate food items https://goo.gl/XaXotN
Have a great week!
Welcome and Welcome Back, Griffin Band Families!
We have started off the school year running! In general, please make sure your e-mail address is updated in Synergy/Pinnacle (the grade book website), because we send many e-mails to you regarding the classes through that portal. We also communicate via call-outs and texts, so please listen and read those messages carefully.
6th Grade – We are going to start assembling and caring for our instruments on Monday, August 14th. Please make sure you have gathered your supplies this weekend, and send them to school with your child on Monday. Bought an instrument? Instruct your child to come to the band room as soon as they get to school on Monday, so we can secure it. The students’ first grade is their student information sheet located in the Band Handbook. Please read through carefully, and sign the information sheet. They are due by Friday, August 18th.
7th Grade: We are playing and practicing music every day! We are working on Creatures in the Attic, and we’re learning our warm-ups called Jump Start. Students are also forming small ensembles. Students are to pass-off one section of either Jump Start or their sheet music every week to earn their pass-off grades. Morning band is every morning from 8:00 to 9:05, and afternoon band is Monday – Thursday, 4:30 to 5:15.
8th Grade: We are practicing and playing music every day! We are working on Etowah, and the students have until the 4 1/2 week mark to pass-off that song in its entirety. We are also working on España Cañi and Funktown to prepare for our first concert on September 19th. Students are expected to practice their instruments outside of class, a minimum of 3 days a week. Morning band is every morning from 8:00 to 9:05, and afternoon band is Monday – Thursday, 4:30 to 5:15. We have enjoyed having a TON of 8th graders staying for afternoon band, and passing-off music. Keep up the good work! Other upcoming events:
- We are fitting 8th graders for their uniforms Tuesday and Wednesday of next week during class
- 7th and 8th grade students are invited to the music department social on Friday, August 25th from 4:30 to 6. Look for permission forms coming home.
- Campbell High School 8th Grade Night is on Friday, September 15th.
- Solo and Ensemble sign-up is happening now!
- Honor Band and All-State sign-up is happening now!
Have a great weekend! E-mail us if you have any questions!

Good morning, Griffin Band Parents!
A few things:
8th grade: WONDERFUL job at LGPE! Mrs. Cole and Mr. Denson are so proud of the music we made at McEachern. If you have any pictures or audio of the event, please send it to [email protected] We are looking forward to a fabulous spring concert here at Griffin, May 9th. Your child should be practicing Hooked on a Feeling and Domino.
7th grade: Two FANTASTIC performances at LGPE! We are so proud of all of you! If you have any pictures or audio of the event, please e-mail them to [email protected] We are preparing for our spring concerts, which we’ll give with the sixth grade bands. They are May 2nd and 3rd. Your child should be practicing line 110 from Essential Elements and Guantanamera sheet music.
6th grade: We are so excited to start working on our first pieces of sheet music. Along with pass-offs from Essential Elements, you should hear your child practicing Beethoven’s Ninth and Señor Slide. Our expectation is that students are practicing 3-5 nights per week, or as long as it takes them to learn one pass-off per week and their sheet music. If your child is struggling, please send them in for extra help.
Morning band is open every morning this week. Afternoon band is closed this week.
Thank you! Have a wonderful spring break!
Greetings, band parents!
8th grade students: all the deadlines have passed for our LGPE music. To ensure that your child is on track, check the grade book for their grades, and look at the top of each piece of music, Courage, As Twilight Falls, and Jungle Dance for signatures (AC or GD) that indicate that your child has completed the task. Students should still practice their music daily, as we are refining articulations, dynamics, intonation, and speeding up Courage and Jungle Dance to tempi faster than what we initially learned.
7th grade students: The deadlines have passed for passing-off Guardians of Liberty, Colliding Visions, and On the Colorado Trial. Please check the grade book and your child’s sheet music to check on their progress. You should see signatures (AC or GD) indicating that they have completed the assignment. Students should still be practicing regularly (3-5 times/week) to refine the articulations, dynamics, intonation, and phrasing for our upcoming LGPE performance.
6th grade students: Students were to have passed-off lines up to 25 by this week. Please check the grade book to make sure your child’s grade is accurate. You should see signatures next to each line passed-off. If you see a number with a date, that indicates that your child tried to play the line, we heard it, and it needed to be refined. For extra help, as always, please send your child to morning band, Monday-Friday, 8am to 9:15 am.
We hope you have a wonderful February break!
