What’s Happening the Week of February 11th-15th

Only 1 more week until February Break!  Remember to bring in your Valentine’s Day box by Wednesday so we can get everything ready to exchange Valentines on Thursday.  We will do lots of fun Valentine’s Day Activities!!

What we are learning this week:

Math:  2 digit addition

This week we will continue to work on 2-digit addition.  We will add 2 digit plus 1 digit, 2 digit plus multiples of ten, and 2 digit plus 2 digit numbers.

Reader’s Workshop

This week we will focus on the book Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink.  We will discuss story elements and sequence of events.  We will work on parts of speech through our mentor sentence this week with an emphasis on identifying the noun that adjectives describe in a sentence.

Writer’s Workshop

We will continue working on our Best Pet writing this week.  We will focus on supporting our opinion and giving reasons and details to back it up.

Social Studies

This week we will finish up our unit on Theodore Roosevelt.  We will also spend Thursday talking about muscles, specifically the heart muscle.

Kindness Challenge

As part of our “No Place for Hate” program, we are looking forward to participating in the Kindness Challenge from January 28th-February 1st.

The students will work together as a class to complete activities to show kindness such as, asking a new friend to play, helping someone, writing a thank you note, or performing a kind act of their own design. Teachers will have daily discussions, read stories, and watch short video clips about showing kindness, inclusion, and respect.

Additionally, we will show kindness in our community by hosting a toiletries drive to benefit The Center for Children and Young Adults AND SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center. With the help of our Student Council, we will be collecting items such as shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, etc. These items will go to children in our community.  A flyer with more information will come home about this.

We will also have some fun by dressing up to the following themes each day.

Monday (1/28)-Hats off to kindness (wear hats)

Tuesday (1/29)-Being kind is groovy (wear 70s clothes)

Wednesday (1/30)-Kindness Rocks (wear rock star clothes)

Thursday (1/31)-Cougars are Kind (wear Cougar Pride or school colors)

Friday (2/1)-Cheer for Kindness (wear sports clothes)

What’s Happening the Week of January 22nd-25th

Happy New Year!  I’m sorry for my lack of posting since the holidays, but my mother has been in ICU and I have been traveling back and forth to Florida.  I think she is finally on the mend!  I hope everyone had a restful break.  Remember there is no school on Monday!

What we are learning this week:

Math:  Greater Than, Less Than, Equal to

This week in guided math we will focus on comparing numbers based on tens and ones.  We will learn the meaning of the greater than and less than symbols and do lots of practice with these.

Reader’s Workshop:

This week we will focus on the book Sneezy the Snowman.  We will use adjectives to describe characters in text, as well as identify different ending is stories.  During guided reading, we will work on fluency and reading with expression.

Writer’s Workshop:  Opinion

We have been working on opinion writing since we returned from the break.  This week we will finish up our opinion writing based on The Day the Crayon’s Quit.

Social Studies:

This week we will finish up our unit on Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea.

What’s Happening the Week of December 3-7

We had a great week back from Thanksgiving!  It was fun to hear about everyone’s fun adventures and travels.

What we are learning this week:

Math:  Word Problems and Place Value Review

This week in math groups we will focus on word problems.  We will identify key words, writing number sentences and using our strategies.  During independent math we will review place value, focusing on tens, ones and hundreds.

Reader’s Workshop:  Bear Stays up for Christmas

This week we will focus on the book Bear Stays Up for Christmas.  We will identify nouns, verbs and adjectives, and will introduce prepositions.  We will do some fun activities with prepositions!  During guided reading we will continue to work on buiding fluency and decoding unknown words.

Writer’s Workshop:  Informational

We finished our Bat writing and they did a FANTASTIC job!  We will do an informational writing this week on an animal of their choice.  They will work with small groups to find facts and gather information.

Social Studies:  Thomas Jefferson

We will continue to work on our unit about Thomas Jefferson.  They are really loving it!

What’s Happening the Week of November 26-30

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!  It was nice to spend time with family for the week!

Four more weeks until Christmas break, that’s pretty hard to believe!

 

What we are learning this week:

Math:  Equal and True/False

This week we will focus on what the equal sign means in equations.  We will determine if number sentences are true or false.  We will also work on making the false number sentences true.

 

Reader’s Workshop:  Mooseltoe

This week we will focus on the book Mooseltoe.  We will sequence to story, discuss story elements and create a character craft.  During guided reading we will discuss differences in fiction and non-fiction text.

 

Writer’s Workshop:  Informational

This week we will put our final touches on our bat writings and share them with the class.

 

Social Studies:  Thomas Jefferson

We will begin out unit on Thomas Jefferson this week.

What’s Happening the Week of November 12th-16th

It’s hard to believe this is the last week before Thanksgiving break!  I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving!

What we are learning this week:

Math:  Missing Addends

This week we will work on missing addends in a problem.  We will do lots of fun Thanksgiving themed actvities and crafts!

Reader’s Workshop:

This week we will focus on the book Turkey Trouble.  We will continue to identify story elements and retell the story in sequence.  During Guided reading this week we will focus on what we are “thankful for…”

Writer’s Workshop:  Informational

We will finish up our informational bat writing this week.  We have learned lots of cool facts about bats!

Science:  Light

We will finish up our unit on Light this week.  We have had lots of fun playing with flashlights and making shadows!

What’s Happening the Week of October 29th-November 2nd

Wizard of Oz Day is Wednesday!!  I am so excited to see everyone dressed as their favorite character on Wednesday!  We will have a fun filled Wizard of Oz themed day…we will watch the movie, have a special snack, and do lots of activities!

 

What we are learning this week:

Math:  Halloween math

This week we will review addition and subtraction through fun candy corn themed activities!

 

Reader’s Workshop:

This week we will read the book There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat.  We will work on story sequencing through guided reading and independent activities.

 

Writer’s Workshop:  Bats

We will work on informational writing through non-fiction texts about bats.

 

Social Studies:  Ben Franklin

We will finish up our unit on Ben Franklin this week!

This week we will focus on learning our doubles facts to 20 to help us add and subtract.

 

Reader’s Workshop: 

This week we will focus on the book Pumpkin Soup.  We will focus on identifying the problem and solution in the story.  During independent reading we will identify problem/solution in a book of choice.  We will focus on fluency and comprehension in guided reading, as well as work on sight words and CVC words.

 

Writer’s Workshop:  Informational

This week we will read non-fiction books on Bats and create a circle map of facts.  We will base our informational writing on what we have learned.

 

Social Studies:  Benjamin Franklin

This week we will start our two week unit on Ben Franklin.

What’s Happening the Week of October 15-19

Remember that all week is Early Release.  The students will be dismissed all week at 12:30.  I look forward to seeing each of you at conferences!

What we are learning this week:

Math:  Preassessments and review

This week in math we will complete some pre-assessments and do a fun review of standards we learned in Quarter 1.

 

Reader’s Workshop:  

This week we will be focusing on the book The Biggest Pumpkin Ever.  We will work on identifying the problem and solution in a story.

 

Writer’s Workshop:  Parts of a story

We will continue to work on including details in a story.  We will include the Who, What, When and Where.

What’s Happening the Week of October 8th-12th

Thanks you to everyone for returning the conference scheduling form so quickly!  I look forward to meeting with each of you during conference week, October 15th-19th.  Remember, conference week is early dismissal.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30 each day.

What we are learning this week:

Math:  Review addition and subtraction strategies

This week during math we will be reviewing addition and subtraction strategies that we have learned in Quarter 1.  We will also be doing some small assessments to see where we still need some work.

Reader’s Workshop:  

This week during Guided Reading we will finish up assessing each student individually on sight words and reading levels.  I am very proud of the progress we are seeing!

We will focus on the book Pumpkin Jack.  We will review parts of speech, as well as identify the key details in the beginning and ending of the story.

Writer’s Workshop:  Narrative

This week we will write narrative stories based on photographs.  We will focus on adding who, what, when, and where to our stories.  We will begin the week out by modeling and writing a story together, then we will write stories on our own.

Social Studies: Scarcity

We will begin our unit on scarcity this week.  We will also focus on saving and spending money.
