Language Arts Periods 1 &3 with Ms. Tansey:  Language Arts papers are due tomorrow.  Continue your revisions and final copy work from home.  We will print in the lab on Tuesday and I will work with those who need last minute consultations on the final stages of the writing process.

Language Arts Periods 1 & 3 with Ms. Tansey:  Today we reviewed sentence structure quizzes.  Students analyzed their quiz answers to understand where they made mistakes in order to prepare for the Test on Monday.  The test will cover Sentence Structure, Advertising Techniques definitions, MLA format and Elements of Explanatory writing.  See Ms. Tansey’s blog for updated information

We will be available Monday before school for last minute questions. Start studying now!

Weather Alert Advisory Announcement:

Due to inclement weather, CCSD is cancelling ALL after school and evening activities except for ASP for today, Tuesday, January 16, 2018.  However, although ASP will remain open, parents are strongly encouraged to pick up their children as soon as possible.  In addition, the district and superintendents office will be monitoring the weather situation and they hope to make a decision regarding tomorrow by 10 pm this evening.  Please stay tuned.

 

ELA Period 1 & 3 with Ms. Tansey: We will have a quiz on simple and compound sentences on Thursday January 18th.  Remember that a simple sentence (independent clause) must have at least one subject and one verb and express a complete thought.  A simple sentence may have compound parts such as compound subjects or compound verbs.  A compound sentence is made up of a minimum of two independent clauses joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon.

ELA Period 2 & 4:  You will be having a quiz tomorrow over  the advertising techniques of:

  • transfer: This is a more complicated technique.  The advertisement tells a story that evokes some positive feelings or emotions.  The intent is that the positive feelings generated from the product will transfer to those who buy and use the product.
  • testimonial: Celebrities or real people endorse a product.
  • bandwagon: everyone is has  it, you should too,
  • avant- garde: Be the first or the only one to have it,
  • facts and figures: facts, charts, figures and  data

Reading Period 5 with Mr. Hince:  Today we took the Winter edition of the Reading Inventory.  We are working on vocabulary words in context.  There is a blog question this week and it is due this coming Sunday night, January 21, 2018  at 11:59 PM.  This blog HW will take a little bit longer and requires a little bit more than the usual short answer blog question, so you have extra time.  Don’t forget to visit Mr. Hince’s blog and get started.  Don’t wait until the last minute!

Check Ms. Tansey’s blog for a quizlet that will help you prepare.  Review your notes so that you are able to recognize transfer, testimonials, facts and figures, avant-guarde, and bandwagon.

Welcome Back!

Language Arts:  Period 1 & 3:  Today we took notes on Expository writing.  See Ms. Tansey’s blog for a copy of the graphic organizer we used for notes.  We also wrote in our journals.  TOPIC:  Write a thank you note to a friend who gave you a pack of garlic and onion flavored gum.  Use only SIMPLE SENTENCES.  If you were absent, you will need to make sure that this entry has been completed.  There will be a QUIZ on Thursday as well.  The quiz will cover advertising techniques found in your book on page 98 and 99.  These words include: bandwagon, transfer, avant guard, testimonials, and facts and figures.  See Ms. Tansey’s blog  dated December 5th for a Prezi that reviews the definitions of these terms.  You will  be given advertisements and you will be asked to identify the techniques used in each advertisement.

Language Arts Period 2&4:  Today we completed the activity called Simpsons Teach Sentence structure for Simple, Compound and Complex sentences.  Students completed a note taking graphic organizer for this activity, and learned formulas for these sentence types.

 Simple Sentence formulas include S+V=IC ; SS+V=IC and S+VV= IC

Compound Sentence formulas include IC+, CC+ IC = CS  or IC ; IC= CS

Complex Sentence formulas: SC, + DC, + IC= complex sentence or  IC+ SC+ DC= complex sentence ( note no comma when the subordinating conjunctions comes in the middle of the sentence.)

 

Reading Period 5 with Mr. Hince:  QUIZ on Thursday over vocabulary and items covered in class this week.  Mr. Hince’s blog has more information about what will be on the test.  You can find a link to his blog on  the right hand side bar .

Dickerson is celebrating!  Our school has been honored as a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education. Parents, teachers and students are  all  contributors to this great honor.  We are proud of the accomplishments of our students and want you to share in the award.  January 12 will be a Blue Out Day for students to celebrate.  More details will be provided next week.

Happy New Year!  Welcome Back to Dickerson for Semester 2!

Seventh Graders, do you realize that you are more than half way through your Public Education?  YES, that is right.  You have more years of education behind you than you have in front of you !

Make the choice for this semester to be your best ever!

Language Arts Period 1 & 3:  with Ms. Tansey.  Today we reviewed phrases, clauses, subordinating conjunctions and the components of sentence construction for simple, compound and complex sentences.  Do you know your formulas?

Language Arts Period 2 & 4:  We responded to a journal prompt:  What would you do if you could travel free to any place in the world?  We also reviewed phrases, clauses, and subordinating conjunctions.  We also learned the formula for a simple sentence: S +V= IC

Reading Period 5:  Today we introduced new vocabulary and went to the Media Center.  Students were asked to check out 2 non fiction books.  Library Plans are due next Thursday.  There will be a quiz next Thursday as well.  Vocabulary words will be on this quiz.  Other information will be added as well.  Stay tuned for an update on this quiz.
