Brit. Lit./Comp., Distance Learning Week 4, Tuesday, 4/14

Hi! I hope you are all curious about beginning Brave New World after completing the “Anticipation Guides” from yesterday, and viewing the introduction PowerPoint. 🙂 I look forward to our discussion on ZOOM Thursday. The reading schedule for this week is below. Also, you do not have to submit your answers for the “Anticipation Guides” or the “Reading Guides” each day like you did for Macbeth. I want us to discuss on our Thursday ZOOM sessions. 🙂 Like I wrote on Sunday, I want you to learn, love, and enjoy this dystopic novel without negative repercussions. This is like “auditing” a class in college, so this is another life lesson for you. 🙂

Reading schedule for this week: Please read chapters 1-3. Now, the first three chapters are a lot of background information/setting for the novel. They can be difficult to get through, but they are extremely important for you to understand how this totalitarian society began, and why. From the PPT, you should have garnered info on the time frame and the setting. London, England, the year is 2540 AD OUR time, but 632 AF (after Ford) in their time—632 years after 1908, the invention of the Ford Model T.

Brit. Lit./Comp., Distance Learning UPDATE

Hi, Seniors!

Welcome back to Distance Learning for the remainder of the semester! I hope that you all took the time during Spring Break to rest, relax, watch Netflix, read a book 😊, and to do anything else to take your minds off COVID-19. I did all of the above, and feel rejuvenated, and ready to continue DL with our last unit, a novel study of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

But before I explain about our last unit, I want to address grades. Many of you texted, emailed, etc., after the info from the district was released about grades. I explained then to be patient, and that more information would be coming after Spring Break. Here is the info that I have received: Any grades that were earned on assignments prior to 3/13 are to be entered into Synergy grade book. Any grades earned AFTER 3/13 WILL NOT negatively affect the grade of 3/13. Now, with that said, I still have a few grades to enter from before 3/13, for example, the “I Am” poems you wrote on Thursday, 3/12. So, here is my plan. I will work this week to input any grades from before 3/13 into Synergy. By 5:00 pm on Friday, 4/17, you will see your official grade as of 3/13. IF you and your parents are satisfied with that as your final grade, then that is what shall remain in the grade book. Now, how does this affect the remainder of your DL opportunities? Nothing changes. You will still receive weekly reading assignments, and we will utilize ZOOM at least once per week to discuss the novel, etc. These final assignments WILL NOT negatively affect your grade. Your grade will NOT change as of 3/13 UNLESS you want to replace a previous “not so great” grade with a DL opportunity assignment from 3/16-5/14. Good News! You will receive the benefit of reading/learning about this wonderful novel with no negative repercussions! I believe this explanation is as straightforward as it gets, but if you have individual questions, do not hesitate to text through Remind or send me an email.

Our DL schedule will be as follows for the remainder of the semester, 4/13 – 5/14:

Monday – Thursday of each week is devoted to reading/analyzing the novel. This includes reading guide questions, discussion questions for when we ZOOM, and any other daily activities.

Each Friday is your time to “catch up” on anything you missed throughout the week, email to conference with me one-on-one, etc. It is also my time to prepare for the upcoming week.

This is PLENTY of information for now! Thank you for reading. I will post all of the information you need for our study of Brave New World including an introductory PowerPoint tomorrow, Monday, 4/13.

I love and miss you all! 😊
