Week of February 4 – 8th at Kincaid

Hello Kincaid Families!

Random Acts of Kindness were rampant last week at Kincaid!  Our students experienced both the benefits of being a giver, and a recipient, of kindness.  We are certain this week of kindness will spark actions that will carry on throughout the year, at school, at home and in the community.

Our counselors were the leaders of Kindness Week and are consistently serving Kincaid to support students in academics, social issues, interpersonal skills and leadership skills.  What a great time to celebrate Ms. Kotarba and Ms. Weitnauer during National Counselor Appreciation Week!

This week is also Georgia’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week.  Students will receive basic tips about being safe in situations that include floods, lightening and tornadoes.  Kincaid will conduct a Severe Weather Drill this week in which your child will practice being in a safe location, and going into a “duck and cover” position, in the rare event of a tornado watch/warning.

Also this week…

  • Send in Box Tops!  PTA will be counting Tops at the end of the week.  Put your child’s grade level on the baggie to enter our school contents
  • Donate Supplies for our Enrichment Teachers.  All students go to PE, Art, Math Lab, Music and STEM Lab!  Our enrichment teachers are running low on tissues, and Clorox wipes, etc., and appreciate any donations.
  • Contact Ms. Leslie at lesliebill.braswell@cobbk12.org if you are interested in volunteering in our library media center on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Have a great week!

A Community of Kindness & Giving

Greetings Kincaid Families!

We are all so fortunate to belong to a loving and caring community, and over the next few weeks, Kincaid is hosting several opportunities to  show kindness and generosity to others!  If you can, please pick and choose what might be a good fit for your family.  This could be as simple as involving your child in a trip to the Dollar Store and talking to him/her about giving to others who are less fortunate….or just talking to your child about kindness, sharing and gratitude.

This Week…January 22 – 25  PTA Hat & Mitten Drive
Your donations of new hats, mittens or socks will go to those in need through MUST Ministries.

Next Week…January 28 – February 1st  Kindness Week
As part of  Kincaid’s “No Place for Hate” program, we will be encouraging our students will be participating in the Kindness Challenge during Kindness Week.  The students will work together as a class to complete activities to show kindness such as, asking a new friend to play, helping someone, writing a thank you note, or performing a kind act of their own design. Teachers will have daily discussions, read stories, and watch short video clips about showing kindness, inclusion, and respect.

Additionally, we will show kindness in our community by hosting a toiletries drive to benefit The Center for Children and Young Adults AND SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center. With the help of our Student Council, we will collect items such as shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, etc. These items will go to children in our community.

We will also have some fun by dressing up to the following themes each day:
Monday (1/28)-Hats off to kindness (wear hats)
Tuesday (1/29)-Being kind is groovy (wear 70’s clothes)
Wednesday (1/30)-Kindness Rocks (wear rock star clothes)
Thursday (1/31)-Cougars are Kind (wear Cougar Pride or school colors)
Friday (2/1)-Cheer for Kindness (wear sports clothes)

Week of February 4 – 8 – Enrichment Teacher Supply Drive
PTA is coordinating a collection of Lysol wipes, band-aids, plastic baggies, tissues, air fresheners, hand wipes, etc. for our Enrichment teachers during this sniffling time of the year. Bins will be located throughout the school.

I will close by expressing my gratitude to you!  It is noticed and appreciated that our families support Kincaid by volunteering, contributing to the Kincaid Foundation, participating in our events and spirit nights, partnering with us in your child’s education…and sending us your best every day!

Have a great week!

Safety First

Hello Cougar Families!

A lot has been shared lately about Kincaid’s student achievement data… but please be assured that safety is  even a higher priority at our school!  We follow Cobb County School District’s detailed plans for safety, and continue to reflect on our local practices.  Since last year…

  • Car tags have been implemented to increase safety in the car lane.
  • A Walker Sign Out sheet has been implemented to document how/when each child leaves our campus.
  • Code Red Lockdown procedures have been revised/improved/practiced.
  • Severe Weather Relocation has been revised/improved to ensure all students are in a safe location in the main building without windows and doors connected to the outside.
  • Most of our staff was CPR trained.
  • All staff was trained for an active shooter.
  • A team was trained in “Stop the Bleed” tourniquet training and new kits are now located throughout the school.
  • All visitors identify themselves on camera before being buzzed in the building, and sign in at the front office.
  • Visitors without a Visitor Tag, will be stopped and asked to report to the office.

Please visit the Cobb Shield website for detailed information about safety plans.  AlertPoint has been piloted across the district and is coming to Kincaid soon!  Alert Point is an emergency notification system that allows for a simultaneous emergency notification throughout the entire campus within seconds, and identifies where the incident activity originated.

Next month, our Coffee Chat topic will be Internet Safety.  Please mark your calendar for January 11th at 8:00.

School expectations and safety are some of the topics on the Georgia Parent Survey given each year. The survey contains 24 questions and the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. Please take a moment to complete the Georgia Parent Survey   Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis.  The survey is currently open through March 1st.  For your convenience, I will resend this link via text.  Thank you for your feedback!

December 3 – 7th at Kincaid

Hello Cougar Families!

IOWA and CogAT scores will come home in your child’s folder this Wednesday (1st, 3rd, 5th grade students only).  The IOWA tests will give you information on how your child compares to other students across the nation.  On average, Kincaid student achievement scores are higher than students in Cobb County, the state, and the nation.  Cougar Pride!!

Did you know that Cobb County has a video series a parent guides available to parents for every math unit?  We know that math strategies and expectations look different than when we were in elementary school….check it out!  These videos are permanently linked from Kincaid website, on our Parent’s Page.

A Voting Runoff will take place in the Kincaid Learning Commons on Tuesday.  Our campus officer, Officer Hicks, will be here to assist with parking and safety.  Speaking of safety, in the mornings, please only drop off students in the car lane in the front of the school.  Do not drive your car in the bus area, or drop off children in the bus area.

Cobb County has new SPAM folders and it has recently come to our attention that it may be filtering some parent emails.  Please let us know if you have sent an email, and have not received a reply with 48 hours bt sending a note to the teacher or calling the front office and leaving a message for the teacher to check the SPAM folder. ALWAYS communicate transportation changes through a note.  We do not want to miss your message.  Thank you for your assistance!  We appreciate your patience and understanding when this situation does occur.  We will respond to you promptly!

Thursday is Papa John’s Night!  Mention Kincaid and your family will get a 40% discount AND a portion of your sale goes back to Kincaid!  Mrs. Begerow’s class won a pizza party because of their high participation on Papa John’s Night last month!

Our community support continues next week at Ivy Lane!  December 11th is Kincaid Day at Ivy Lane.  Mention you are from Kincaid, and you will get a 20% discount.  In addition, Ivy Lane will donate a percentage of your purchase back to the school. For an additional fun, shopping experience, refreshments will be served between 4-8pm.

If you or your child would like to donate a toy or clothing item for a child in need, please select a paper ornament from the Giving Tree. Please purchase the item listed on the ornament and place the unwrapped item under the tree by December 14th. All items will be delivered to MUST Ministries for their Toy Shop benefiting needy families in our community. Please contact our school counselors if you have any questions, by email lori.kotarba@cobbk12.org or Meredith.weitnauer@cobbk12.org or by calling the school. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
