Peace, Love & Fall Break

Hello Cougar Nation!

I am thrilled with the turnout for our Fall Festival last night!  It was so much fun to see all the families picnicking and the children playing football and having fun with the good old fashion carnival games…including the dunk tank!  All of this was possible as a result of the planning and volunteer hours from our fabulous PTA, Foundation and parent and teacher volunteers.  Sincerest thanks to all!!

This is our last week before Fall Break!  Important reminders for this week:

  • Vision testing on Thursday for our 1st and 4th grade students.  1st and 4th grade parents, please have your children that wear glasses bring them on Thursday for the vision screening.
  • Also on Thursday, if you need a break from cooking, Thursday is Kincaid’s Papa John’s Spirit Night.  Just say you arefrom Kincaid and a portion of your purchase will come back and support our school.
  • Friday, September 21 is the International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”).  To celebrate this wonderful day, Kincaid staff and students are participating in several activities to promote kindness and acceptance.
    •  Students and staff are encouraged to wear “Peace” themed clothes to school. Break out your tye-dyes, headbands, bellbottoms etc. to celebrate peace at Kincaid and in our larger world.
    • Our talented Ms. Rausch will create “Pinwheels for Peach” with all with all students to display outside on the front lawn.  You and your child are welcome to view the display on Thursday evening or Friday.

Wishing you and your family a restful and safe Fall Break!  When you come back…we will be “Walking on Wednesdays” during the month of October!

Let’s have a groovie week!
Peace Out!
Ms. Blake

IOWA Testing Begins This Week

Hello Cougar Families!

Our 1st and 3rd-grade students finished cognitive abilities testing last week…and now our 3rd and 5th-grade students will start the IOWA Test this Thursday…and finish next Tuesday.  The IOWA Test is a nationally normed test that will give parents/schools achievement data on our students compared to their peer across the nation.  There is nothing to do to prepare for these tests….except:

  • Stick to an early bedtime for plenty of sleep.
  • Make sure your child gets to school on time!
  • Provide your child with a healthy breakfast.
  • Encourage your child to do his/her best!

Speaking of testing…another big test that all of our 3rd, 4th and 5th-grade students will take in April, is the End-of-Grade (EOG) Georgia Milestone.  This standardized test is directly aligned to the Georgia standards.  All students in Cobb County will take this test online this year.  Here is a website with practice questions similar to those on the EOG GA Milestones.  You can see the technology tools available to students during the test, the format of the test, and the rigor of the questions in the test.

This Friday!!!!   I am soooo excited for our FALL FESTIVAL!!!!  Please plan to join in on this fun, family and community event this Friday from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Lastly, if you need a break from cooking this week….don’t forget, Tuesday is Kincaid’s Zaxby Spirit Night from 5:00 – 8:00pm.  Just say you are from Kincaid and your purchase will come back and support our school.

Have a great week!
Ms. Blake

Safety, Priorities & Partners

Good Morning Kincaid Parents,

You may have heard that we had an unplanned school evacuation (yesterday) Friday, due to fire alarms.  Our alarms were triggered during lunchtime, and although the alarms were the result of a mechanical error, I am happy to report that our building was safely and fully evacuated in just a few minutes.  Safety for our students is our highest concern, and we conduct ongoing drills for emergency situations.  I am most proud of our youngest Cougars in kindergarten, who were calm and safely exited in this impromptu situation with the skilled assistance of our staff.

Three weeks in…and we are off to a great start to our school year with priorities that support all of our learners!  Kincaid’s 2018-2019 Priorities are to:

  1. Function as an effective Professional Learning Community with strong collaboration practices among all stakeholders
  2. Strengthen our Balanced Literacy Program to meet the needs of all students
  3. Support and expand STEAM opportunities for all students with state-of-the-art Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math experiences

Kincaid is fortunate to have a committed staff and community support to reach our goals!  Your support of the Kincaid Foundation directly impacts our priorities and our students.  In addition, we have recently received donations of time, money and support through other business partners including Mona Properties, IBM, Mathnasium and The Coder School.  Thank  you for supporting these businesses!

Walton High School’s Math Team will be holding their Fall Elementary MathFest on September 29th. Registration is now open.  In preparation for the tournament, Walton will hold a One Day Math Camp on September 24th.

Parent Night and More!

Hello Cougar Families!

We had a great turn out for our K – 2 Parent Night last week…and look forward to welcoming our 3rd – 5th parents this week to hear directly from their child’s teachers about this year’s curriculum, communication protocols, testing and more!  This overview is intended for parents and we are unable to have separate childcare available.

3 – 5 Parent Night
August 16th at 6:30.  A repeat session will start at 7:10 (for those who have siblings)

Georgia Milestone Parent Reports from the Spring 2018 test, arrived last week and were sent home in your 4th and 5th grader’s student folders.  If you had a 5th grader last year, those reports were sent on to their middle school and you will receive those after August 24th.

As a reminder, the Georgia End-of-Grade (EOG) Milestone Assessment is administered in the spring to every 3rd, 4th and 5th grade student in the state of Georgia.  This standardized test measures student proficiency directly aligned to their grade level standards.  EOG Milestone data is used to measure student learning, teacher effectiveness, and is a huge component of our overall school rating (CCRPI Score).  Milestone data is one piece of data used to make decisions about student placements and programs in both elementary and middle school, and guides us in evaluating and developing goals in our School Strategic Plan.

Car Tags
As we begin this 3rd week of school, all afternoon car riders should now have a Kincaid car tag.  Beginning this week, any car without a car tag, will have to park and come into the building with ID to sign out a student.  If you need a car tag, please come to the front office.  We have provided up to 2 car tags for families of car riders.

Free Money for Kincaid!!!
Did you know that snipping Box Tops and bringing them to the school has resulted in thousands of dollars for Kincaid?  I collect mine in a drawer and send them in a baggie every few months.  Label the baggie with your child’s grade level, and it will be counted toward a quarterly PTA contest.

Also, if you shop at Publix, you can enter your phone number on the credit card pad, and a portion of your purchase will automatically come back to the school.  Just create a Publix account here…add Kincaid as a School Partner and you are all set!

This week is our first Spirit Night at Chickfila!  Please come join the fun Tuesday Night!  Make sure to tell them you are from Kincaid….and once again, a portion of your purchase comes back to the school.  Drive thru purchases also count!!

Stay informed!  Look for our next Cat Tracks Newsletter coming this month from our PTA/Foundation!  Like Kincaid Elementary on Facebook, follow kncaidprincipal on Twitter…and as always, my weekly emails can all be found on my blog.

With Cougar Pride,

Ms. Blake

First Week

Hello Cougar Families!

It was a smooth start for our first 3 days…if only the weather could have been a little more cooperative for our students transitioning from summer break!   We have been busy building our routines and procedures with our students for this year…and look forward to meeting with parents at the upcoming Parent Nights.  Please plan to come to school to hear directly from your child’s teachers about this year’s curriculum, communication protocols, testing and more!  This overview is intended for parents and we are unable to have separate childcare available.

K – 2 Parent Night
August 9th at 6:30.  A repeat session will start at 7:10 (for those who have siblings)

3 – 5 Parent Night
August 16th at 6:30.  A repeat session will start at 7:10 (for those who have siblings)

Visitors
We welcome all visitors!  Just a reminder that all visitors need to sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor’s sticker.  Thank you!

Car Rider Reminders
If you are opting for your child to be a car rider, here are a few car line guidelines to ensure safety and efficiency:

AM Procedures

  • Students must stay in the car until 7:15am when the bell rings or when the staff members on car duty report to their area. The school doors are locked until 7:15am and we do not have staff on duty to supervise students until 7:15.
  • While moving through the car line, pull all the way up to fill the entire drop off area, which ranges from the end of the sidewalk in the front circle, to the drop off sign along the entry drive.  Our lengthy drop off area allows us to unload 12 – 15 cars simultaneously, which keeps our car lane moving quickly and smoothly.
    • DO NOT slow down the line by only pulling up to the front door, or waiting to drop off your child right at the front door
    • DO NOT pull into the disabled parking spaces.  We have parents of students with physical disabilities who need these spaces.
    • DO NOT pull into the bus area.
    • Prepare your child to exit the car in a timely manner by having backpacks ready and saying good-byes before you get to the drop off area.
    • Please make sure your child exits the car on the right side of your car (curb side)
    • Do not exit your car.  We have personnel available to assist your child(ren).
    • After 7:45 please park your car, walk your child(ren) into the building, sign them in, and obtain a tardy pass.

PM Procedures

  • To ensure student safety, no student checkouts can be made in the office after 1:45p.m.
  • Car riders are picked up in the car line area in the front of the school between 2:10 and 2:30 in cars with a Kincaid car tag.
  • Walkers are dismissed from the front door of the school and will be released to approved adults beginning at 2:10.
  • Car riders and walkers must be picked up by 2:30pm.
  • Students not picked up by 2:30 pm will be checked into ASP(After-school program), charged a $10 registration fee, if they have not already registered, and a $7 daily ASP fee.

If you have not received a car tag yet, please send a note to your child’s teacher.  After this week, any car without a car tag, will have to park and come into the building with ID to sign out a student.

We look forward to another fun and productive school year!

Ms. Blake

Preparing for 2018-2019

Greetings Cougar Nation!

I hope this message finds you rested, rejuvenated, and sun-kissed from some good times!

We are just a week away from opening our doors for our 2018-2019 Teacher Meet & Greet, which will take place on Monday, July 30th.  To help with parking, we want to stagger the crowds, so if you last name begins with an A – L, please plan to attend from 9:00 – 9:45.  Students’ with last names beginning with M – Z need to come from 10:00 – 10:45.  At 10:45, PTA will conduct a short meeting to get the new budget approved for this year.

Class lists will be posted this Friday by 5pm on the front windows of the school, and of course, will be available during Meet & Greet.  Please be assured that your child was carefully matched in a classroom with collaboration of any parent input about teacher characteristics, and teacher input, while ensuring all student special needs and program needs will be met.  Class lists may be tentative based on administrative discretion, to ensure all students are properly placed to receive appropriate services.  We are still enrolling and placing students this week and classroom changes will not be considered unless there was a specific scheduling oversight.

If your child will ever be an afternoon car rider, please pick up your new, blue car tag during Meet & Greet!  Car tags and used to ensure safe and orderly dismissal procedures for our students.

Pre-ordered school supplies will be delivered to your child’s classroom prior to Meet & Greet.  If needed, the School Supply List is posted online.

Tuesday morning, July 31, K-1 students, along with their parents, are invited to ride the bus, as a practice run prior to the first day of school.   Buses will run at regularly scheduled morning pick up times and parents/students should be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early. Here Comes Summer…

Hello Cougar Nation!

Here we are…our last 3 days with students.  Please keep in mind that Monday is a regular school day, and Tuesday and Wednesday are Early Release Days.  Students will be dismissed 2 hours early.  Expect your child to be dropped off at the bus stop two hours earlier than his/her normal time.

This week we are so excited to have Kincaid Alumni, the Class of 2018, come back to Kincaid and walk the halls of their elementary school, as they approach their high school graduation milestone.  Our students will have the opportunity to line the hallways, see role models, see themselves in the years to come, and cheer for our former Kincaid Cougars as they start the next chapter in their lives.

We are also looking forward to celebrating the accomplishments of our 5th-grade students who have successfully completed their elementary school years with awards and parties.  Thank you to all the fifth-grade parents who have volunteered their time to make the 5th-grade activities possible!!

Thank you also to all the room moms who have supported our classrooms all year!  A special thanks to Mrs. Fairey for providing 3rd grade with the Snow Cone Party during their reading celebration!  Kincaid is a better place because of all our volunteers!

Finally…Field Day!  It was amazing!  Thank you to the K-2 volunteers for enduring the heat and the constant threat of rain.  You kept the day going and the students had a blast!  Thank you to the 3-5 volunteers.  Having an indoor field day is no easy task and there is no way we could have done it without you!  We really appreciate all you did for us and the students!

Last Day Reminders:

  • No book bags on Wednesday
  • No lunch boxes on Wednesday…send lunch in a disposable bag
  • Car tags will be collected on Tuesday/Wednesday.  We will sanitize and reuse another year.
  • New car tags (new color) will be provided during Meet and Greet on July 30th.

Class lists for 2018-2019 will be posted on the school windows by the end of the day on Friday, July 27th.  Please plan to attend our Meet and Greet on Monday, July 30th, to find your child’s classroom, meet the teacher, sign up for the After School Program, sign up for After-school Clubs, drop off medication to the nurse, get your new car tag, determine your bus stop, and More!!  See you then!!  Have a safe summer!

Ms. Blake
