This week and next we are learning about:

Reading-reading stories from different points of view

Language Arts– Reviewing Nouns & Proper Nouns, Adjectives, Verbs, Compound and Complex sentences

Phonics/Spelling Focus–Controlled AR Words:
Hair, wear, repair, cherry, bare, bear, pair, swear, compare, airfare

Writing-Our new unit of study is Opinion Writing. We are writing letters to help persuade our friends to read a book. The letter should include an opinion and 2-3 reasons that support that opinion. We will be watching book reviews on Reading Rainbow and creating our own!!

Math– Adding and Subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers using a hundreds chart, breaking it down, friendly numbers and number lines, Counting and Writing Numbers to 1000, Adding and Subtraction 10 and 100 to a given number. Showing numbers with base ten blocks, words, expanded notation(ex. 624= 600 + 20 + 4), Addition and Subtraction Fluency–continue practicing those flashcards. I would like to have everyone at fluency level by St. Patrick’s Day.

Social Studies: Identifies and describes the contributions and positive citizenship traits of Martin Luther Kind, Jackie Robinson and Juliette Gordon Low.

Art Show

You are cordially invited to come see the incredible creations your children have been working on in Art classes this year! Your child’s artwork will be on display for our Winter Art Show beginning this Friday evening, February 9th. Our official “opening” is in conjunction with the start of the Winter Dance. Artworks will remain on display until the end of February and you are invited to visit our gallery any time you are at the school. All artworks will be returned to students when the display ends. Thank you for supporting your child’s creative development!

Welcome back again!  Once again we are trying to settle back into a routine in second grade!  While the weather was lovely last week, we will be playing catch up this week.
Math – We will be subtracting and adding two digit numbers.  Students will use different strategies.  We will also be solving one and two digit word problems as part of our daily routine.
Reading – We will complete our unit on Fables and Folktales.
Writing – In writing we are writing opinion letters to our classmates about special books that we have read.
Spelling – /r/ controlled /a/ vowels.  Words were sent home on Monday!

Parents, please take time each weekend to wash jackets, water bottles, wipe down backpacks, binders, etc. to help prevent illnesses during flu season. We are trying to be preventive at Mountain View in combating the flu that we are hearing about on the news lately.

Few things…

In your child’s take home folder today is an info. letter on an upcoming field trip on February 7th!! 2nd grade will be going to see Beauty and the Beast at the Cobb Energy Center. Please be sure read, sign, and return. This field trip is included in our Performing Arts fee that was sent home at the beginning of the year.

Also, we are beginning our unit on Astronomy. These are two really cool sites to check out at home!

To track the path of the ISS (International Space Station) over your house, you can use either of these sites (I prefer the NASA site). It is very simple. You can see the ISS at night without any extra help- no telescope needed!

Cold Weather Days

Hi Parents!

Here are some optional activities to keep our kiddos learning in the cold weather!

1-Write me a letter on why they like/dislike snow days and don’t forget to list your reasons and use transition words-because, and, also.

2- Sumdog for reinforcing math standards (if you need your login info please feel free to message me on class dojo)

3-Razkids- read/listen to a book and answer comprehension questions

Haopy New Year! Week of January 8-12

 This week in our class:
ReadingThe standard that we will be covering the next 2 weeks is – recounting stories, fables, and folktales from diverse cultures and determines the central message, lesson, or moral
Language Arts–  This next 2 weeks we will be writing friendly letters-parts of a letter, using commas in the date, and greeting and closing of letters.  We will also be reviewing nouns & proper nouns as well as word endings.
Phonics/Spelling Focus–We are reviewing “no excuses” sight words that must be spelled correctly at all times: was, saw, should, would, could, once, because, again, people, were 
Writing-Our new unit of study is Opinion Writing. More to come!

Important Dates:
Monday, January 15- no school
Last Friday, I sent home your child’s Q2 report card. Please be sure to sign the large white envelope and send back. The report card and assessment sheet are for you to keep. If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. Thank you so much for your support!!!

PAJAMA DAY TOMORROW!! DECEMBER 18TH!!!

Thank you so much  to all of our families for the amazing Holiday Party!  The kids had a great time creating all of the beautiful ornaments and eating the tasty food!  Thank you to everyone who jumped right in and helped with all of the stations.  A special thanks to our 2 room moms who put it all together….Thanks Lisa and Liz!!
