Highlights for the Week of February 11th-15th, 2019

I hope you all had a great weekend. What happened to the sunshine and warm weather from last week? We have a busy week ahead of us with Valentine’s Day and the STEM Expo taking place towards the end of the week. Can’t believe this is our last week before Winter break! Safe travels to those of you who will be traveling over our break.

What’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s second grade class:

Reading: Understanding characters’ points of views in Fairy Tales.

Writing: Valentine’s Day writing and Valentine Sweet Treat opinion writing.

ELA: Mentor Sentences, “Snowman at Night” with a focus of adjectives.

Phonics: review of r-controlled vowels

Math: subtracting two 3-digit numbers using a variety of strategies, solving 2-step word problems.

Social Studies: Introduction of Juliette Gordon Lowe

Enrichment Rotation: Monday/Math Lab, Tuesday/PE, Wednesday/PE, Thursday/ART, Friday/STEM Expo

What else is going on around Kincaid:
*Congratulations to our top AR readers: Nora 85 points, Claire 68, Kyle 66, and Yash with 59!! We have so many students who love this program and have truly become wonderful readers this year. I love to see this enthusiasm for reading and I am so PROUD of ALL of my AR readers!! Great job!

*We will have library checkout on Tuesday afternoon. All books are due by February 15th before Winter break.

*The STEM Expo will be taking place for our class on Friday, February 15th in the cafeteria from 8:30-9:15.

*Thank you to Shahan’s aunt who was in town visiting from Indiana. She was our mystery reader on Friday. We enjoyed meeting her!!


*Please continue to work hard on those Math Blast folders throughout the week. Continue to practice those facts and return the folders by every Friday! Congratulations to those students who are on subtraction only or mixed subtraction and addition.

*We will be having our Valentine’s Day celebration on Thursday after lunch. Target students will be joining us for the rest of the day. If your child wants to bring in a box from home for their Valentines, they absolutely can! If not, we will be making bags in class as well. Your child is welcome to bring in valentine cards/treats to share with their classmates.

Highlights for The Week of February 4th-8th, 2019

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend!!

What’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s second grade classroom:

READING: In reading workshop we will read and compare Fairy Tales. This week we will read The Gingerbread Man and compare this story with other versions.
WRITING:  We will complete our opinion writing on Sweet or Salty.
SPELLING/PHONICS: r-controlled vowels er/ir/ur is our focus again this week. Words and homework will come home tomorrow.
MATH: Adding 2- 3-digit numbers using strategies and 2 step word problems.

Blast off came home on Friday. Please return by this Friday

SOCIAL STUDIES: This will be our last week on Jackie Robinson. The study guide will come home tomorrow for our test on Friday. PLEASE help your child study for this test. 

**Thank you so much to Mrs. Johnson, Tennessee’s mom,  for the delicious sprinkle donuts she sent in on Friday as part of our celebration of “Kindness Week.” I hope we continue to “sprinkle kindness”  in our classroom and around our school.

What else is going on around Kincaid:
*We will go to the Science lab on Friday.  PLEASE send in supplies and your plan for the car by Friday. Remember, ALL supplies need to be recyclable. 

**Send in your box tops.

**A  list of class names will be sent home on Monday so the children can work on their Valentines. The children are welcome to bring a Valentines box that they have made at home. I will have white bags for the kids to decorate if they don’t want to make a box at home.

Highlights for the Week of January 27th-Feb. 1st, 2019

I hope everyone had a great weekend!! So the BIG question is… SNOW or NO SNOW on Tuesday?? If no snow, we’re supposed to have bitter cold temperatures this week, so make sure your child is dressed extra warm.

What’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s second grade class:

Reading: Fairy Tales- comparing and contrasting fairy tales (our focus will be on Little Red Riding Hood). We will also be doing some Kindness activities to celebrate Kindness Week.

Writing: We finished our first opinion writing piece on Friday, and will begin a new writing, “Salty? or Sweet?” on Monday. The kids will write an opinion about which is better… salty snacks or sweet treats

ELA: Mentor Sentences, “A Royal Zookeeper” with a focus of adverbs and adjectives.

Phonics: r-controlled vowels, er/ir/ur. The spelling test will be on Friday.
The words are: learn, girl, turn, heard, twirl, churn, person, dirty, turnip. Sight words: because, another, really, thought, saw and head.

Math: Our guided math this week will be adding two 3-digit numbers using various math strategies
*Math-Blast was not sent home on Friday. We will be taking the time tests this week in class. Look for your child’s folder to come home on Friday.

Social Studies: We will finish up Jackie Robinson this week. A study guide will come home on Wednesday and the test will be FRIDAY.

Enrichment Rotation: Monday/PE, Tuesday/ART, Wednesday/MUSIC, Thursday/STEM, Friday/MATH LAB

*We will be celebrating Kindness Week all week long! We will also have some fun by dressing up to the following themes each day.
Monday (1/28)-Hats off to kindness (wear hats)
Tuesday (1/29)-Being kind is groovy (wear 70s clothes)
Wednesday (1/30)-Kindness Rocks (wear rock star clothes)
Thursday (1/31)-Cougars are Kind (wear Cougar Pride or school colors)
Friday (2/1)-Cheer for Kindness (wear sports clothes)

*We are preparing to make puff mobiles in STEM Lab! Please begin to save RECYCLABLE items for your child to make a puff mobile here at school. Please begin saving small cardboard boxes, plastic bottle caps, straws, etc. We watched a video in Science Lab on Friday, so hopefully your child already has a good idea of what makes a “successful” car. We will be talking about these more in class.

Highlights for The Week of January 14th-18th, 2019

I hope you all had a wonderful week. We had a great first week back after the holiday break. The students settled in nicely and worked really hard.

What’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s second grade class:

READING: We will be comparing and contrasting different fables.
*2 AR tests are due by Friday. These tests must be taken on a book at their level and they must receive a 70% or higher on it.

WRITING: I will be introducing opinion writing. I will read the story “Hey Little Ant” and our opinion piece will be tied in to this story.

LANGUAGE ARTS: Mentor Sentences, “Thunder Cake” is our mentor text with a focus on vivid verbs.

PHONICS/SPELLING: Our focus is on “or” r-controlled vowels

MATH: applying strategies to solve when adding three 2-digit numbers

*Math Blast went home on Friday and is due back by this Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We are continuing our study of another Georgia Hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Enrichment Rotation: Monday/STEM, Tuesday/Math Lab, Wednesday/PE, Thursday/PE, Friday/ART

*Congratulations to Nora (77), Claire (63), and Kyle, (60) for being our top 3 AR readers. I am so PROUD of ALL of my readers who continue to take AR tests and earn more gumballs weekly. So many students are excelling in their AR quizzes. I LOVE your enthusiasm for READING!!

*Report cards for the second quarter were sent home on Friday. Please sign on the second nine weeks line and return the report card envelope as soon as possible. You keep everything inside the envelope!! Thank you!!

*We will have library checkout on Tuesday afternoon.

*We will have a media lesson Friday afternoon.

*We are in need of THIN, BLACK dry erase markers if you wish to contribute to the classroom. Thank you in advance!

Highlights for the Week of January 7th-11th, 2019

Hoping that you all had a marvelous holiday break making memories, building on traditions, and just enjoying time together! From this point forward your SECOND GRADE year is going to F.L.Y!!! So buckle up and enjoy the ride! 🙂

REPORT CARDS will be distributed Friday, January 11th, so please do look for those in your child’s PURPLE Take Home Folder. Please do sign the envelope stating you received the report card for the second nine weeks, any questions please feel free to contact me via email…. amy.mccoy@cobbk12.org and I will get with you ASAP.

What’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s second grade class:

READING: I will be Introducing Fables. We will compare and contrast fables vs. fairytales.

WRITING: We will be reading a book about New Year’s Resolutions and then do a cute writing activity with your child’s New Year Goals

LANGUAGE ARTS: Our text this week that goes along with Mentor Sentences is Gingerbread Baby. We will be focusing on verbs.

PHONICS/SPELLING: Our focus will be on “ar” r-controlled vowels

MATH:  We will be working on missing addends with addition and subtraction, adding/subtracting by 10’s and 100’s.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Our next Georgia Hero to start off the New Year with is Martin Luther King, Jr.

Enrichment Rotation: Monday/Math Lab, Tuesday/PE, Wednesday/PE, Thursday/Art, Friday/Music

*We will have library checkout on Tuesday afternoon. Your child is able to check out 2 books as long as they have returned their other 2 books.  2 AR tests are due by Friday with a 70% or higher on a book at their level.

*We will have a Safe Schools assembly on Tuesday presented by the Harlem Globetrotters!  Students in 2nd through 5th grades will be attending.

*We have science lab on Friday morning.

*Thank you to Mrs. Hood for coming in the week before break and being our mystery reader!! The kids LOVED hearing the story that you shared with us.

PLEASE send your child to school with a coat (although not needed with current weather :)) we will continue to go outside for recess, even if just to get some fresh air for 10 minutes.

PLEASE send a snack to school EVERY DAY with your child. Before break, there seemed to be a lot of students without a snack!!

*Thanks again to all of you that helped with the holiday party and coordinating other holiday activities and gifts. You are appreciated more than you know!!

Highlights for the Week of December 10th-14th, 2018

I hope everyone was able to stay dry this weekend and that the rainy weather is moving out. It has put a damper on my Christmas shopping!!

Here’s what’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s class this week:

Reading: Introducing rhyming and alliterations.

Writing: Mary Musgrove poster projects

ELA: Mentor Sentences, “Parts” mentor text with focus on contractions.

Phonics: focus on “oo” and “u”

Math: telling time

Science: Introduction of the famous Georgian, Tomochichi

*Congratulations to our Cougar Award winners this second quarter… Morgan, Ava, Gia, and Cooper!!

*Parents, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for this winter weather. Your child must have a jacket to go outside for recess.

What’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s Class:

Reading: Introducing making connections in a text between the pictures and text.

Writing: We will finish the “Creek and Cherokee” informational writing piece, review James Oglethorpe, and begin our Mary Musgrove poster project.

ELA: Mentor Sentences, “If you give a Mouse a Cookie” Our mentor text will focus on contractions.

Phonics/Spelling: our focus this week will be on “oo” and “ew” words

Math: measurement, using centimeters, inches, and meters to measure objects, using measurement in word problems.
Blast-Off Math went home on Friday and is due back by this Friday!!

Social Studies: Introduction of the famous Georgian, Mary Musgrove

Enrichment Rotation: Monday/STEM, Tuesday/Math Lab, Wednesday/PE, Thursday/PE, Friday/Art

*I can’t tell you how PROUD I am of my readers who are participating in the AR program. I would like to recognize the following students for their dedication and commitment to reading:

Highlights for the Week of November 26th-30th, 2018

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and was able to spend some quality time with family and friends. The week always goes by so fast. We are going to be very busy over the next four weeks before our Christmas break!!

Here’s what’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s classroom:

READING: We will continue working on main idea and supporting details. We are going to be reading a book about autumn and other informational books in guided reading to practice main idea and details. We will continue to read books and take AR tests.

GRAMMAR: We’ll be continuing with Contractions

WRITING: Our informational writing piece will be on the Creek and Cherokee Indians

SPELLING/PHONICS: Our spelling unit will be on Contractions and we will continue to review ou and au sounds. The Spelling list and homework will come home on Monday.

MATH: We will begin working on measurement and continue to work with one and two-step word problems. Homework in math will come home on Tuesday and Thursday.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Our next Georgia Hero is James Oglethorpe. There will be a test over him on Friday. A study guide will come home on Tuesday or Wednesday.

THANK YOU to: Mrs. Smith, Jacob’s mom,  for being our Mystery Reader before Thanksgiving break and sharing several Thanksgiving  stories with us.  Also to Mrs. Roberts, Gia’s mom, and Mrs. Johnson, Tennessee’s mom, for the special Thanksgiving treats. The student’s loved them!!

*Tuesday, Nov. 27th will be student banking
*Thursday, Nov. 29th the school store will be open from 7:15-7:45 a.m.
*Thursday, Nov. 29th the 3d grade will perform “The Grinch” during a 6:30 PTA meeting
*Friday, Nov. 30th is Kincaid Foundation’s Pajama Day. Bring $2.00 to the cafeteria in the morning
*Friday, Nov. 30th is a Coffee Chat with the principal at 8:00 a.m. in the Media Center

A MESSAGE FROM OUR COUNSELORS:
Kincaid Elementary has put the annual “Giving Tree” in the front lobby of our school. If you or your child would like to donate a toy or clothing item for a child in need, please select a paper ornament from the Giving Tree. Please purchase the item listed on the ornament and place the unwrapped item under the tree by December 14th. All items will be delivered to MUST Ministries for their Toy Shop benefitting needy families in our community. Please contact our school counselors if you have any questions about the Giving Tree. Highlights for the Week of November 12th-16th, 2018

It’s so hard to believe that we are only one week away from Thanksgiving Break!! We have a very busy week ahead, too.

What’s going on in Mrs. McCoy’s second grade class:

READING: In Reading we will continue working on main idea and supporting details. We will also read about Sequoyah, our first Georgia Hero. He is known for inventing the Cherokee alphabet.
CONGRATULATIONS TO Kyle (13) and Claire (12) for their participation in Kincaid’s AR program. They took 13 and 12 tests respectively this week. So proud of your enthusiasm for reading!!

GRAMMAR: We will be working on contractions this week

WRITING: We will be doing a writing piece on “If you could invite anyone in the world to your Thanksgiving dinner, who would it be and why.” Then we will write about what we are thankful for.

SPELLING/PHONICS: ou and ow. There will be a test on Friday with homework coming home on Monday night.

MATH: We will be reviewing our addition and subtraction strategies, one and two step word problems, and take our test on Thursday and Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Creek and Cherokee Indians

I would like to THANK you for making my birthday extra special!!  I loved all the cards from my students and we ALL enjoyed the cupcakes brought in by our room moms, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Karim. I also loved my lunch from Chicken Salad Chick.
