Happy Friday and Happy Fall Break!! I hope you all have had a great week. The kiddos have worked extremely hard in the classroom this week and have had a lot of fun today celebrating International Peace Day and also celebrating the last school day before Fall break. Enjoy your week off with your child! Here is what we have planned for when we return the first week of October.

Weekly Focuses:

Reading: Character response- review of quarter 1 curriculum- writing and answering wh questions, identifying the beginning, middle, and end of a story, and also identifying how characters respond to events and other characters in a story.

Writing: continue writing our second personal narrative, “A Time I was Afraid”, rough drafts/final copies

ELA: Quarter 1 grammar review- common/proper nouns, plural/irregular plural nouns, collective nouns

Math: reviewing place value and the value of digits in a number, counting coins (pennies, nickles, dimes), money word problems.

Science: Matter (solids, liquids, gases) and how matter changes (heating, cooling, etc.)

Enrichment Rotation: Monday/STEM, Tuesday/PE, Wednesday/PE, Thursday/Music, Friday/Art

*International Day of Peace~ Friday, September 21st: Next Friday, September 21 is the International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”).  Peace Day is observed around the world each year on September 21. Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.  To celebrate this wonderful day, Kincaid staff and students are participating in several activities.

  • Teachers will be delivering lessons and activities to promote kindness and acceptance.
  • Students and staff are encouraged to wear “Peace” themed clothes to school. Break out your tye-dyes, headbands, bellbottoms etc. to celebrate peace at Kincaid and in our larger world.
  • Rausch will create “Pinwheels for Peace” with all students to display outside on the front lawn.  These pinwheels will be put out on the afternoon of September 20th. You and your student are welcome to view the display on the evening of September 20th or on September 21st.

ELA: Mentor Sentences, “Stelleluna” w/ focus on singular and plural nouns.

Math: adding and subtracting without regrouping using a variety of strategies including counting back, decomposing, and vertical algorithm.

Hello everyone! We have completed another full week of our second grade school year. It was a very busy week as we had a library lesson, went to science lab for the first time, learned all about taking AR quizzes and took our beginning of the year reading inventory assessment. Whew! The kids have been doing a great job with adapting to a new classroom environment and have continued to give their best efforts with the many tasks they’ve taken on! Weekly Focuses:

Reading: discussing different book genres and identifying which genre the books are that we are reading, practicing thinking and writing down our thoughts during reading time, writing responses to our reading in our journals, and asking wh questions after reading.

Writing: continue writing personal narratives, “My Ouch” story, brainstorming, sequencing, facts/events.

ELA: Mentor Sentences, “Memoris of a Goldfish” w/ continued focus on proper nouns.

Math: launching of guided math, reviewing number strategies~ counting on, fact families, doubles, doubles+1, and word problems

Social Studies: continue our study of the 5 Regions of Georgia

*AR Quizzes– we began these this week. The students have learned how to take quizzes using their student ID number and how to find the book on the computer that they wish to quiz on. I told them that if they have any books from home they want to take quizzes on, they can bring them in to me or you can check to see if they have a quiz at www.arbookfind.com .

*Remind 101– If you still wish to sign up for these text reminders, you still can! Text the message @billing18 to the number 81010.

*Homework– We will be starting nightly homework next week! They will have a worksheet to complete each evening Monday- Thursday in addition to the Math Blast folders.

*Math Blast Folders– due every Friday but can of course be turned in before then. I will stuff the folders with fresh math sheets for the new week and will return to the students for them to take home tomorrow! Please let me know if you’d like additional sheets sent home to work with.

*Education Galaxy– this is a new program that we are launching this year at Kincaid. Today we completed a reading pretest in order for the program to give them an appropriate starting point. The kids have learned how to log on to Education Galaxy and use the program. This can be accessed not only at school, but at home as well!

*Students have log-in cards in the back of their folders. Please work on memorizing their student ID number.

*Please return Cobb County folder form and clinic card if you have not done so already.

*If you have not brought in a picture for the “This is Us” wall, please do so! It is coming together nicely and is adorable!

*Please return the scrapbook pages from Meet and Greet if you have not done so already.

*This week, Mrs. Kotarba came to visit our class. The children learned about her job as our school counselor. Mrs. Kotarba was excited to meet our new students, and to remind our returning students about school counseling at Kincaid. Mrs. Kotarba will be visiting our class every three weeks. Our class will work with her on friendship, conflict resolution, study skills, career awareness and safety skills.
