Dear Parents,

We made it!  It’s already time for Thankgiving Break.  Time sure does fly when you’re having fun!  I hope you all enjoy this time with family and we will see you in December!

We are learning… 

  • Reader’s Workshop– This week we discussed author’s point an using reasons to support the point.  
  • Writer’s Workshop– We continued our unit on non-fiction writing.  Many of us began finishing up our first non-fiction book! 
  • Math– In math this week, we finished up our unit on strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems to 100.  
  • OG/Word Work– Our focus this week was on –am, -an, and –all words.

Newsletter- November 15, 2019

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for all your support this week with Pajama Day, Blue for Diabetes Day, and the amazing Veteran’s Day Breakfast.  It was a busy week! One more week until we get a break for a week to celebrate Thanksgiving and family.  Have a great weekend!

 

We are learning… 

  • Reader’s Workshop– This week we examined how author’s use rhythm and rhyme to add meaning to a story.  
  • Writer’s Workshop– We continued our unit on non-fiction writing.  This week we discussed how to add a glossary, table of contents, and an about the author page. 
  • Math– In math this week, we began working with strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.  We used an open number line and OG math blocks. 
  • OG/Word Work– Our focus this week was on special patterns that have a long vowel sound before a final blend- –ild, -old, –ost, -olt, -ind. 
  • Unit Day- This week we began our research on the founding of Georgia while learning about James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, and Tomochichi.

Newsletter- November 8, 2019

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much to all those who helped make Native American Day successful this year.  The kids had a blast!

Can you believe there are only 2 weeks until Thanksgiving Break?!  We will be working very hard over the next two weeks on our nonfiction reading and writing skills.  I am hoping for normal schedules after Monday’s performance for the Veteran’s Day breakfast.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

 

We are learning… 

  • Reader’s Workshop– This week we worked on identifying possessives in our reading.  We discussed the differences between contractions and possessive nouns.  
  • Writer’s Workshop– We continued our unit on non-fiction writing.  We worked on writing letters to our veterans for our Veteran’s Day breakfast on Monday.  We also wrote letters to soldiers currently serving in Afghanistan.  
  • Math– In math this week, we continued with solving word problems with 2 steps up to 20.  
  • OG/Word Work– Our focus this week was on magic e words with c and g like cage and race.

Newsletter- Oct. 25, 2019

Dear Parents,

It’s been another great week in 2nd grade!  Our Foundation Patron Drive is in its final week.  If you have not donated yet, please visit our Foundation page to make your donations today!

Just a reminder that we do not dress up for Halloween in school.  However, I think PAJAMA DAY on FRIDAY might be fun!  

We are learning… 

  • Reader’s Workshop– This week we continued examining features of nonfiction text: glossary, index, table of contents 
  • Writer’s Workshop– We continued our unit on non-fiction writing.  We brainstormed ideas to find things we are experts about.  Then began listing facts and choosing chapters to write.   
  • Math– In math this week, we learned all about telling time to 5 minutes! 
  • OG/Word Work– Our focus this week was on “reptile” words- 2-syllable words where the words are chopped between the consonants and it ends in magic e.  Ex- inside, reptile

Newsletter- October 18, 2019

Dear Families,

I truly enjoyed meeting with each of you this week to discuss your amazing kids!  Thank you for sharing your children with me each day.

We are learning… 

  • Reader’s Workshop–  This week we began investigating the features of non-fiction text: photographs, captions, labels, comparisons, types of print, and glossary.  We will continue into next week. 
  • Writer’s Workshop– We began our unit on non-fiction writing by first learning how to write a reader’s response for non-fiction books.  
  • Math– In math this week, we have been focusing on skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 100s. 
  • OG/Word Work– This week we focused on reviewing all skills we have learned this year.

Newsletter- October 11, 2019

Dear Parents,

We have had another great week together!  Our Sparkles field trip on Monday was a success and we worked to finish up this quarter’s skills to get ready for conferences.

Foundation Update:  As of October 9th, Mt. Bethel families have donated $41,935
and have pledged $1,375!  22.3% of households have participated.  We need YOUR help
to reach the goal of 100% participation!  Thank you in advance for your donations!

 

We are learning… 

  • Reader’s Workshop– This week we have been focusing on reviewing our skills we learned this quarter.  We revisited questioning, response journals, and reading strategies. 
  • Writer’s Workshop– We worked to finish up narrative writing this week.  We are choosing our best piece to use for our author’s celebration. 
  • Math– In math this week, we finished up our unit on money with focusing on money word problems. 
  • OG/Word Work– This week we focused on magic e words!

Newsletter- October 4, 2019

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful Fall Break!  We are coming back to school with a very busy next couple of weeks.  Some second graders went on the field trip to Sparkles this week and said it was really great!  We will be going on Monday so remind students to wear their field trip shirts and bring their lunch in a disposable bag if bringing.

We are learning… 

  • Reader’s Workshop– This week we have been focusing on questioning.  Good readers ask questions before, during, and after reading a book to develop a better understanding. 
  • Writer’s Workshop– We continued working on our personal narrative writing.  We looked at sample pieces of writing and helped the author come up with ideas for revising and editing to make their stories better.  We also examined good leads and endings in mentor texts and tried to do the same in our writing.   
  • Math– In math this week, we began learning about coins and how to count them using our skip counting strategies.  
  • OG/Word Work– This week we focused on compound words!

Newsletter- September 13, 2019

Dear Parents,

We are FINALLY back to our normal schedule today!  We are are definitely ready for getting back to normal.

However, today happens to be Friday the 13th AND a full moon!!  Whew!  Luckily we only have 1 week to go until Fall Break.  Hopefully we can all get some time to relax and rejuvenate and come back refreshed and ready to learn.

 

We are learning…

  • Reader’s Workshop– This week we discuss strategies for learning new words in our reading.  We can use context clues, a glossary, or a dictionary to help us determine the meaning of new vocabulary.
  • Writer’s Workshop– We continued working on our personal narrative writing.  We looked at sample pieces of writing and helped the author come up with ideas for revising and editing to make their stories better.
  • Math– In math this week, we began using our new place value blocks as an addition and subtraction strategy.  We can now use our blocks and draw a model as a strategy.
  • OG/Word Work– This week we focused on VCCV (rabbit) words.  These are 2-syllable words where the word is chopped between the consonants and each syllable is closed.  Ex// muffin, publish, dentist
