I know we are all looking forward to our break, however, let’s not get lazy now! Students can use MyOn to continue reading throughout the break. One of the great things about this program is that it enables me to monitor the length of time students spend logged in and even track what they are reading. Upon our return in January any student that has read at least two hours on MyOn over the break will receive extra credit in reading!
Below I have posted some conventions and grammar games that can provide extra practice and support for becoming stronger writers. Please encourage your child to be proactive and accountable for their learning…they may even have some fun!
The New Year brings the opportunity to turn over a new leaf and make positive changes. I know that each and every one of us has the same goals for our kids to be successful both academically and socially. With your support I know that all of my wonderful students will have an exceptional 2015!
I wish all of you and your families as happy holiday season filled with long visits from family and friends making memories more dear than the gifts that are exchanged.
Winter-Holiday Spelling List
Myon is a reading program that the Nickajack Foundation has graciously purchased for us. Today I showed our students how to access the site. They will need to log onto the site (login: student number password: read) and take a brief test and survey. Once this is completed they can begin reading thousands of books! This program gives them the ability to read to themselves or listen and read along as the book is being read. Internet access is required to go to the site, but once the children have accessed the books they will be able to download books of their choice to a tablet to take on those long car rides over the winter break. We will be using the site to track reading homework in place of paper reading logs. Technology: helping us be environmentally responsible!
If your child has not yet accessed Myon, please encourage them to do it today. It is well worth taking a look!
Our school wide spelling be representative will be Mahnoor. The fourth and fifth grade will be competing on Friday December 19th at 8:15 in the cafeteria.
If you are able to donate our class would be appreciative of you help. Below is a list of supplies we are either totally out of or running low on. We are also still need of old magazines for our writing project next week.
Our wonderful room mom Stephanie Cadena has planned a lovely holiday party for us on December 19. She has set up an online signup for volunteers to bring materials and sent out an email inviting everyone to view and commit to donating to the class. Please consider signing up. We will also need parent volunteers to help facilitate the craft and game centers, set up and help our students clean up. Our kids are all very excited for the party and they always feel special when their family can come help or donate to the class.
Below is the link to the sign up page.
Just ten more school days until Winter Break but there is still a lot of learning to do and fun to be had doing it!
Don’t forget that biocube projects are due THIS FRIDAY DECEMBER 12. Your child will need your help to create their cube and check it for completion. Please go over the rubric and guidelines (posted November 21) with them.
We will be participating in the school wide spelling bee to determine who will represent Nickajack at the county level. The winning students from both our class and Mrs. Espenshied’s class will compete on Friday December 19 along with representatives from all fourth and fifth grade classes. The winner of this round spelling bee on December 19 will go on to the county spelling bee.
This school year Nickajack has elected to participate in the Myon online reading program in place of AR. I will soon be introducing the students to the program and they will take their initial reading test to determine the level on which they will begin reading and testing. More details to come!
As your student studies their spelling words each week please be sure to go over the letter patterns with them. Our spelling test now requires students to write sentences using four of their spelling words and they are encouraged to define the entire list to help them do this.
