It was so thrilling to see so many of my kiddos and their families at International Night!  A BIG THANK YOU to our families who came out and brought food from their culture to share with our Powers Ferry family.  Yarelie, Jacob, Alisson, and Isabella’s families brought food and drinks that were delicious!  These families, along with many others, made International Night a success!  I am sad I did not get any pictures from International Night.  If you have any, please send them to me though Dojo and I will upload them to my blog.

Spring is just around the corner and so is the end of the 3rd Quarter!

Be sure you are reading with your child every night!  You read to them and they can read to you.  Make it a special time for you both.  Your child has made tremendous growth this year!

In math, we are solving word problems within 20, comparing 2-digit numbers, determining the unknown number in equations, use strategies to add and subtract withing 20, and mentally find 10 more and 10 less of any given number.  There are so many math skills your students need to master by the end of first grade.  Learning their addition and subtraction math facts to 10 will help them tremendously.

In reading, we are determining the central message or the lesson of stories, comparing and contrasting the adventures and experiences of characters in stories, and distinguish between information provided in the pictures and information provided in the text.

In writing, we will finish our unit on Opinion Writing.  Your students have learned to state their opinion and give reasons for their opinions.  In the 4th quarter, we will revisit all 3 genres of narrative, informational, and opinion writing.

In science and social studies we are learning about plants and animals as well as learning about George Washington Carver and Ruby Bridges.

Thank you to everyone who brought in snacks for our 100 day celebration!  The kiddos had lots of fun writing about what they will be doing when they are 100 years old and then enjoying their 100 piece snack.

February is a super month in 1st grade.  We will have a Valentine’s celebration on Feb. 14th- please bring in valentines and/or a treat to share with the class!  A letter is coming home shortly with your student.

On February 9th, please bring in your favorite teddy bear to help us celebrate learning about Theodore Roosevelt!

Please, please. please be sure your student is reading and practicing sight words every night!  If you need any help, please let me know.  By the end of the 3rd quarter, they should know 151 sight words.

We have a big field trip coming up on March 5th…The Georgia Aquarium!  We are in need of chaperones; look for a letter to come home.  We would love to have you join us!

Be sure to ask your child what they are learning in school.  They should be able to tell you they are learning about light sources, how to write their opinion, how to use adjectives (describing words) to make their writing more interesting, and how to find a missing number in a math equations.

Hello 1st Grade Families!

December is off to a great start at Powers Ferry!  Your kiddos had lots of fun during our snow experience last week and I loved seeing some of them see snow for the first time!

As our 2nd quarter comes to a fast end, I wanted to remind you of a few events we have coming up.  Friday, December 15th is our annual pajama day.  Your students are welcome to wear pajamas to school.  Please be sure they are school appropriate.

On Monday, December 18th, we will have our Holiday Party form 1-2pm.  A letter went home with details and requests for food.

Don’t forget, December 19th and 20th are early release days.  Students will be released at 12:20.

December 20th also marks the end of the 2nd quarter.  I have loved teaching your students so far this year and look forward to a successful 3rd quarter!

Please read, read, and read some more over the holiday break!  Check out our new library on Lower Roswell Road!  It has an amazing children’s section. http://www.cobbcat.org/news-updates/east-marietta-construction/

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

Don’t forget: On Friday, November 17th, all our First Grade classes will have their annual “Friendsgiving Feast.”  Please consider sending in a small snack to share with our class.

Next week there is NO SCHOOL for the Thanksgiving holiday.  I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
