Thank you to everyone who brought in snacks for our 100 day celebration!  The kiddos had lots of fun writing about what they will be doing when they are 100 years old and then enjoying their 100 piece snack.

February is a super month in 1st grade.  We will have a Valentine’s celebration on Feb. 14th- please bring in valentines and/or a treat to share with the class!  A letter is coming home shortly with your student.

On February 9th, please bring in your favorite teddy bear to help us celebrate learning about Theodore Roosevelt!

Please, please. please be sure your student is reading and practicing sight words every night!  If you need any help, please let me know.  By the end of the 3rd quarter, they should know 151 sight words.

We have a big field trip coming up on March 5th…The Georgia Aquarium!  We are in need of chaperones; look for a letter to come home.  We would love to have you join us!

Be sure to ask your child what they are learning in school.  They should be able to tell you they are learning about light sources, how to write their opinion, how to use adjectives (describing words) to make their writing more interesting, and how to find a missing number in a math equations.

Hello 1st Grade Families!

December is off to a great start at Powers Ferry!  Your kiddos had lots of fun during our snow experience last week and I loved seeing some of them see snow for the first time!

As our 2nd quarter comes to a fast end, I wanted to remind you of a few events we have coming up.  Friday, December 15th is our annual pajama day.  Your students are welcome to wear pajamas to school.  Please be sure they are school appropriate.

On Monday, December 18th, we will have our Holiday Party form 1-2pm.  A letter went home with details and requests for food.

Don’t forget, December 19th and 20th are early release days.  Students will be released at 12:20.

December 20th also marks the end of the 2nd quarter.  I have loved teaching your students so far this year and look forward to a successful 3rd quarter!

Please read, read, and read some more over the holiday break!  Check out our new library on Lower Roswell Road!  It has an amazing children’s section. http://www.cobbcat.org/news-updates/east-marietta-construction/

Wishing you all a very Happy New Year!

October is a super, fun month in 1st grade!  I am so happy to share this time with your child.  Here are some of the things we will be focusing on this month:

Math: Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.   Reading: We are reading fictional books, identifying main idea and details and asking questions about a text. Writing: We are writing narratives with 3 or more events with key details and transitions.  Social Studies: We can describe and identify 4 different types of land forms – Mountains, Valleys, Deserts, & Coasts.

Continue to practice your sight words on the sight word lists I am sending home. I will
assess them individually.
 They should know 75
sight words by the end
of this quarter.

Homework notebooks are due every Friday.

Please keep sending in Box Tops!

Conference Week is coming!  Notes will be coming home this week with your student’s conference day and time.  Please sign and return the paper ASAP!

September 2017

Fall is almost here!  September brings a lot fun and exciting things to first grade!

Very Important!  September 6th -8thCogAT testing for first grade begins Wednesday morning. Please help your child do their best by ensuring an early bedtime and providing a healthy breakfast. In addition, please make sure your child arrives at school on time. Testing begins promptly at 8:00 AM.  Thank you!

Take Home Reading bags will begin this week!  Be sure your child is reading 10-20 minutes every night.  It is okay to re-read their books several times.  There will be a list of questions inside the bag for you to discuss with your student.  You do not need to do every question on every book.  These are suggestions to get your student thinking and talking about what they read.

Progress Reports go home Wednesday, September 6th.  Any area with an “X” indicated your child is not making progress with that standard.  A “check mark” indicates your student is making progress with that standard.

Picture Day is coming September 18th.  All students will have their picture taken this day regardless if any pictures are purchased.

Please continue to send in Box Tops!  There is a contest between the classes and the class that has the most Box Tops wins a party! Box Tops can be found on many packages that would otherwise go in the trash or recycling.  Each are worth 10 cents  for our school.  They can really add up!  Please cut them off and send them in to school.  We have a container in our classroom where we keep them.  My class is the reigning champ of Box Tops! Please help us keep our streak going!

Please keep practicing sight words with your student.  Students should know 75 sight words by the end of the first quarter.  You received the complete list of 200 words at the beginning of the school year. Additional word lists have been going home with students who are in need of additional practice.  The link below is the complete list of the 200 words your student should know by the end of fist grade.
