January 7-11

Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a wonderful Holiday Break! I cannot believe that we are into the second half of the school year! We have a busy week ahead of us!

Math: We are working with fractions! Students have learned how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators using the four square method. We will continue to practice this skill this week during math workstations, and our mini lessons will focus on multiplying fractions. Fractions are heavily weighted on the Milestones, and they can be tricky for students. If you would like for me to send home some extra practice for your student, please let me know!

Reading: Before the break, the students took the Reading Inventory assessment, and I am blown away by their growth this year! Many students have already made the growth that was expected for the YEAR! Keep up the amazing work!! This week in reading, we are working on how to write an effective summary for a fiction text.

Writing: Before the break, we started writing a fictional narrative about being trapped in a snow globe. I have loved seeing the students’ creativity with this writing prompt! We are working this week on making sure to have a plan before we begin writing with a clear beginning, middle, and end, with a problem and solution, and developed characters. I cannot wait to see the final products!

Inquiry: We are wrapping up our economics unit, A Penny for Your Thoughts. The students learned about different economic events throughout American history including the cattle trails, the Panama Canal, immigration, the Great Depression, the New Deal, and rationing. I am SO proud of the hard work the students put into our lesson. The students developed an inquiry based lesson to teach the other 5th grade classes about rationing. They included scripts and everything! They blew me away with their knowledge and creativity. We will have a test on this unit on Friday.
