The Essentials of Reading With Your Child

Parents often ask, “What can I do to support my children in becoming better readers?  Literacy expert and educator, Lucy Calkins, says, “Perhaps the most important essential for the teaching of reading is the fact that children need to listen to the best…literature read aloud to them.”

Younger children are often read to from a variety of books; however, as they grow older, parents might think they have outgrown listening to books read aloud. That is not necessarily the truth.  Older children enjoy the time listening to great literature read aloud. Rich discussions could ensue by reflecting on a chapter or section of the book once it has been read.

When selecting a book to read aloud, think about the books you have read and loved.  Enthusiasm about a book will catch like a wildfire!  Experiment with reading various types of books across different genres: realistic fiction, fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, mystery, or nonfiction. Most of all, relax, have fun, and enjoy this precious time with your children as you enjoy books together!
