#SeeYouSeeMe Reflection Sheet

#SeeYouSeeMe is Palmer’s newest reading program geared towards helping students read about their own unique identities as well as the unique stories of others. It is modified from the 2019 Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year and 2019 School Library Journal Mover and Shaker, Cicely Lewis’s program, #ReadWoke as well as author Gene Luen Yang’s program “Reading Without Walls.” Because the Cobb County School’s Language Arts theme is “Windows and Mirrors” and because we wanted to make the program accessible to middle school students, we felt that “See you. See Me” reflects our goal. We hope that students who do not often see themselves or their stories reflected in literature will do so, and we also hope that by reading stories about others with whom they may not be familiar, students will become more fully aware of the struggles and perspectives of others.

To qualify as a #SeeYouSeeMe book, it must meet any of the following criteria:

  • give voice to the voiceless
  • have a protagonist from an underrepresented or oppressed group
  • challenge a social norm
  • contain a character who doesn’t look like the reader or live like the reader
  • cover a social topic the student does not know much about

Examples of groups that might highlighted in the #SeeYouSeeMe books include

  • people in poverty
  • minorities
  • immigrants
  • women
  • the deaf
  • those adopted or in foster care
  • people with special needs
  • people who struggle with mental illness

**Books labeled as #SeeYouSeeMe were already in the Palmer LC collection.**

To earn prizes, students must read and complete a reflection sheet for four (4) #SeeYouSeeMe books.

Students completing both items above will win the following prizes:

  1. a free new book from our Scholastic book shelf
  2. their photo displayed on the #SeeYouSeeMe Wall of Fame
  3. an opportunity to tell about their book on the morning announcements.
  4. invitation to a quarterly lunch party with a friend
