  • Opening
    • Go over rules for the Stations Lab activity
  • Class Assignment
    • Students will rotate through stations 1-10.
    • Students will identify each substance as an element, compound or mixture.
      • If the substance is a mixture, indicate the type of mixture (heterogeneous or homogeneous).
      • Students give a reason for their classification by explaining using vocabulary and characteristics of how mixtures are classified.

Objective: Differentiate between elements, molecules, compounds and mixtures.

  • Think-Pair-Share: With an elbow partner one student read the learning question and the other student respond with their understanding of the learning question.
  • Class Activity:
    1. Give each pair of students a bag containing either the mixture or the compound.
    2. Ask them to separate the substance on the table
  • Quick Read: S/read a Quick Read on how matter is classified.
  • Peer Talk – With a partner, s/discuss the Quick Read on how matter is classified
  • Students watch a short video clip on how matter is classified (elements, compounds and mixtures).
  • Students take notes using an interactive PPT on how matter is classified.
